Create a Fresh Floral Table Runner for Spring or Easter

Use fresh flowers to create a blooming table runner for your spring or Easter celebration! Tutorial includes flower arrangement longevity tips and additional floral inspiration.

Easter’s on its way, and I’m hopping down the bunny trail with steps to create a fresh flower arrangement as a runner for your Easter or spring table!

And as it’s the third Monday of the month I’m joining my blogging friends to share some floral inspiration and Monday Morning Blooms! You’ll find my floral friends’ links to their blooming creations at the bottom of this post.

Our common theme for this week’s edition of Monday Morning Blooms was an Easter arrangement. I’ve been wanting to create a fresh floral table runner, a variation on this fall floral and edible runner, that uses dried hydrangeas.

To create this fresh flower table runner, I started with some chicken wire. You can find chicken wire in small rolls at the craft store and larger rolls at the garden center. I found my chicken wire in a 18 by 39-inch roll on Amazon for around $8. (Your chicken wire doesn’t have to be white, galvanized is fine.)

I stopped in Dollar Tree to see what I could use as a base for my table runner and found plastic storage containers, sold in packs of two. { Yippee, 2 for $1 and reusable for food storage! } The dimension of my containers is 5 1/2 inches wide by 8 inches long and 2 inches deep.

Cut your chicken wire about 4 inches wider and longer than your container, so you have a couple of inches of wire on each side to bend and place inside your container. If you find your chicken wire doesn’t want to stay in place, use waterproof floral tape, running a couple of strips across the width of your container to secure it.

After the chicken wire is in place, arrange the containers down the center of your table. Now they’re ready to be filled with a floral preservative / water solution to help prolong the life of your flowers.

The viburnum by my Potting Shed is covered in fluffy white snowballs. . .the only snowballs you want to see in April!

I cut some snowballs to add the floral runner. Viburnum stems are woody so I used my vegetable peeler to remove the outer layer of the wood of the branch to help the stems ‘drink’ and stay hydrated and fresh.

Start with your larger flowers, adding them to your containers, making sure the stems stay submerged in your water solution. This will be easier as you add more flowers and you have stems that criss-cross in your containers.

In addition to snowball viburnum, I used some pink and blue hydrangeas, white alstroemeria and pink Charmelia, that I had leftover from a previous arrangement. Both alstroemeria and Charmelia are long-lasting flowers that will look fresh up to two weeks.

I tucked in some faux eggs for a little Easter decoration and as filler to add along the length of the runner.

Bunny egg plates are framed with a garland of flowers on scalloped plates and white chargers. . .

And served up on white wicker placemats, appropriately, by Bunny Williams 🐰 for Ballard Designs. ;)

Bunny ears provide napkin rings for our Easter table. . .

I used alternating colors of pink and blue! 🐰

This is a fun way to add flowers to the length of your table that you can do anytime of year! Use wet floral foam if you prefer, trimming your blocks of foam to fit your containers. I’m a fan of chicken wire, as it can be reused.

Here are few tips to help extend the life of your flowers in your arrangement:

Cut your flower stems at a 45 degree angle for maximum water uptake and remove any leaves below the water line.

Always add the floral preservative packets to your vase water that come with your flowers. If you don’t have any floral preservative, you can make your own with this easy formula.

Check your water level to top it off if necessary. Some flowers like hydrangeas are heavy drinkers.

If you’re using cut hydrangeas, use the alum-dipping method to keep them from wilting.

Keep your flower arrangement away from heat (like vents blowing) or direct sunlight.

Change your vase water every other day if possible.

Your photos are great and this post gave me an idea for easter. thanks –
I also happen to have the viburnum snowball bush – but have lime green emerging blooms and they might not be ready in time.

Happy Monday Mary! Other than using the wet floral foam, I have often wondered just how one goes about to contain the flowers in a floral runner…love that method!….Oh how I so envy that huge Viburnum!…I planted a Snowball Viburnum a few years ago at the former house and drove by it the other day just to admire it!…the curation of the runner of flowers is perfection and the thought that went into it the coordination of the colors with the adorable bunny plates is “signature Mary” …. You make us start off our Mondays with a smile and bloom inspiration!!!

What a great post! I have never worked with chicken wire before because I thought it would be difficult to deal with. Having now read this, I am willing to give it a try. Your floral arrangements look beautiful. I also am crazy about that tablecloth! Happy Easter to you and yours, Mary!

What a terrific tip about the Viburnum stem trim! I never would have realized that my snowballs needed a trim before being added to a vase. We’re having a late Spring here so ours are not in bloom quite yet, but I’m already planning on using some for the Ball jar vases for my colleagues (combining two of your ideas!).

I’m loving all your Easter posts! With your pictures as inspiration I purchased all new Easter decorations for our home. Sadly, my husband was cleaning out the garage and thought the piles of large Home Goods bags were trash. Needless to say, there’s a pile of gorgeous Easter decorations somewhere at the local dump. Sigh. I’ll have to live vicariously through your pictures this year!

Hello Mary, I looked high & low last year, and now this year, for the ‘Set of 4 Cookie Stamps’ for Easter. Finally found them on eBay, only 99c & .60 shipping. You used these in your ‘Layered Spring Salad for Easter’. Blessings, Tricia

Dear Mary – you give me so much inspiration. Your tablescapes are stunning! I so appreciate you giving us the details of how to put your designs together and the fact that it involves simple inexpensive reusable items. I’m sure I speak for everyone when I say we can’t thank you enough. I have a quick question – A month or two ago in one of your posts there was a set of plates with baby chicks on them. I thought there were chicks on all four but maybe it was the set from Pottery Barn and there was one chick plate. I tried to look at your pins but I have so many……can you please let me know if you have a set of 4 chick plates and where they are from? Hope I wasn’t dreaming…lol.

  39. April 26, 2019 at 4:17 pm

Oh My!! This is just so beautiful Mary! You truly created magic on your table with those plastic containers and chicken wire, it is breathtaking!!

Mary, this post is a wealth of talented genius! Your tables make me want to set a different table each Sunday of the month. If only I had all those beautiful blooming azaleas, dogwood trees and snowball viburnum. And of course the lakeside view! Thanks for sharing all your creative ideas. Each one stunning!
I’m with you on wishing for later Easter dates. I prefer late April.
Happy Easter to you and your sweet girls.
