Happy Earth Day! Spring is in bloom here in North Carolina! The azaleas were perfectly in sync and timed to bloom with Easter’s arrival this year. . . I love it when it works out that way!
I’m always amazed at how quickly the azaleas go from bud to bloom. . .don’t go out-of-town for a week, you’ll miss it!
Plants are the foundation for a healthy and happy Earth.
They provide nutrition, release oxygen, absorb carbon dioxide, regulate water cycles, provide habitat for wildlife, all while providing beauty.
Of course if you’re a gardener, every day is Earth Day!
Sunday was a picture perfect spring day here at the lake after a couple of days of severe thunderstorms and tornadic weather moving through.
The viburnums have been blooming for about a month now. Doublefile Viburnum is as wide as it is tall.

Snowball Viburnum has been beautiful this spring.
With the storms that blew through on Friday, fluffy snowballs were reduced to a blanket of snow petals. . .
Bridal Wreath Spirea has an old-fashioned appeal and graceful arching branches.
I love the pretty blooms that lend a cottage garden feeling.
Here’s a fun Earth Day fact:
Over this course of a year, a mature tree will absorb 48 lbs. of carbon dioxide and in exchange, will replenish the atmosphere with enough oxygen to support two human beings.
I saw this quote last year on Earth Day that will make you think and should set our priorities straight:
Imagine if trees gave off WiFi signals. . .We would be planting so many trees we’d probably save the planet too. Too bad they only produce the oxygen we breathe.

I was afraid it was frost-nipped in early April and there wouldn’t be any blooms this year. . .

Mary, we planted Viburnum 2 years ago and had our first blooms this year. They were few and not too showy. Yours are positively glamorous! What do you do for such bountiful blooms ?

That Lady Banks rose is gorgeous! Your blooms are all way ahead of ours here in Zone 5. I see my lilac is pushing to bloom. I always look forward to that because the scent is so intoxicating!
We are in Zone 4 so can only dream of blooming roses. Soon and very soon, we can be hopeful in your photos that our growing season will happen once again.

Mary – your pictures make me believe that Spring will indeed finally come to our neck of the woods! When I had looked at the calendar in January, I was happy to see that Easter was going to be later in April. I began thinking about my annual Easter brunch and egg hunt for my grandchildren. I planned on serving my hors d’oeuvres on our deck and I started thinking of colors for my little tablescape and vignettes on our outdoor baker’s rack. I had decided on a cute carrot theme. I figured I would have already planted pansies in our window boxes…..fast forward to the beginning of April. Still having snow, no sign of any crocus or daffodil bulb even thinking of poking through the earth-you get the picture. We did have a lovely Easter brunch but we did not have our hors d’oeuvres on our deck as our deck furniture has not been out outside yet and our egg hunt was which was almost an indoor hunt, went off fine with sweaters and sweat pants. Spring is very late here this year so your blog is beautiful to my eyes and hopeful to my heart ! Hugs, Dorinda

Your pictures are so beautiful. I am terribly lax about taking garden pictures but I will try harder this year. I adore Viburnums and they are spectacular this spring My Chinese snowball has blooms as big as soccer balls this year and my doublefile is a thing of beauty after 3yrs of waiting . I seem to have a majority of shrubs with white flowers and a lot of white tulips and they all were in bloom this Easter and with the sun finally coming out we spent the afternoon outside. This coming week I need to get planting my containers and so many other garden chores. Thank you for sharing your lovely property

Thank you Mary for another beautiful post. I know it is Spring here as our Chimney Swifts have arrived! Every year for 34 years, they have made their nest and had their babies in our chimney. They are welcome guests and we love hearing the babies chirping for food – sometimes so loud, we have to turn the TV up! Welcome Spring!!

That was gorgeous fun! I love a white garden, cool, tranquil and visible at night! I have several mature bridal veils blooming madly too, they always stop me in my tracks! We went from winter to summer, just skipped spring, into the 90s after cold rain all the way into mid april, I am panicking trying to irrigate a few hundred roses by hand and still watch over the couple hundred plus trees I planted last year! Good thing I love to garden 😉 it’s amazing watching your garden mature over the years, beauty for decades!
