Happy Sunday! Here’s a little weekend waterview. . .our flags were flying for National Flag Week and in commemoration of Flag Day.
When it rains, it pours!
After three weeks of no rain and 90+ degree temps, Lake Norman is full again, along with the other lakes along the Catawba River Basin, which extends to the North Carolina foothills.
7 to 9 inches of rainfall last weekend flooded homes on Mountain Island Lake, in parts of Mecklenburg, Catawba, Caldwell and Gaston counties.
A notice from Duke Energy for Lake James’ residents yesterday:
The Catawba River Basin continues to experience high inflows from the recent rainfall. The Duke Energy hydro operations team is aggressively moving water through the river system. Lake James is spilling and the lake level is declining. As always, we encourage those living along lakes, streams and other low-lying and flood-prone areas to pay special attention to changing weather conditions and take any necessary precautions. Updated lake levels are available any time at www.duke-energy.com/lakes, and by calling 800-829-5253.
Duke Energy opens the floodgates to Cowans Ford Dam that impounds Lake Norman to protect a dam’s structural integrity and to control the flow of water. It was a sight to see all the water rushing through the gates last Sunday~ a record amount of water for the dam’s 56-year history.
Our resident Great Blue Heron stops by daily to fish or perch on our boat lift.
I’m always amazed at how long he can balance on one leg! You can see a heron nest with chicks, here.
We had a chance to boat and enjoy some sunshine after the rain moved through.
Lola is a ‘Daddy’s girl’ 🐾
The weather was beautiful yesterday. . . a cool and breezy morning with sunshine with low humidity.
Note to Mother Nature: More days like that before we return to the 90s please!
Happy Father’s Day to all the Dads out there. ♥
Hope you’re enjoying some sunshine where you are. ♥
Beautiful summer pics Mary. Lola is such a pretty girl. The cooler, lower humidity days were wonderful and wish we could have more of them! I am always amazed by the herons & other birds. Your flag day tribute this week was wonderful & I enjoyed your posts & patriotism. Happy Father’s Day to all the dads today & yes fur baby dads count! 💕🇺🇸🐾
Lola is so sweet. I have been following you for a while and find your photos stunning. The details and styling you do for flowers and tables are such a joy to see. We are in Pittsburgh and our weather this summer has been 6 days of clouds and rain. One spectacular day of sun no humidity and comfortable temperatures. Hope your family has a great Fathers Day.
That is scary about the flooding near you, but glad you got the much needed rain. I’m so glad Lola loves boating, just like Chloe and Gracie! I love to watch the boats with dogs go by, a lot of the dogs insist on standing right on the bow, how they don’t fall in is a miracle! Love the flags, especially the photo with the flag reflection in the water, beautiful~

Wow, the powerful water photo! Your photography skills are wonderful, Mary. I refreshed on that heron’s nest post too, just fabulous. We’ve loved the cooler temps too.
Happy Father’s Day to all the father figures out there!
I love your “different” posts occasionally. I am always impressed by the lake systems and the power of water. I live near a large Texas lake and am always fascinated by the rise and fall of the river and then the release of the dam at various flood stages. Be careful out there after a big rain. Large logs and trees come down to our lake and you can run them over and really mess up. Thank you for a view of how it happens in other parts of the country. Lola is beautiful.
We’ve had lots of rain, too, Mary, and more last night. Last Sunday, areas in Dallas lost powers for days, and I had my Dallas family here.
Happy Father’s Day to Lola’s special dad!
How sweet to see Lola looking out of the boat, and cuddling with your husband. Love the triple flags and your resident Great Blue Heron. Happy Father’s Day!!!
Lake Norman is such a beautiful setting, and the dam with the water flowing full force is truly a sight to see. All the dams in our area were built after the war. We all just hope that they remain strong!
quiet day here, and yes with sunshine. Heading out for a walk. Happy Sunday!
We had flood warnings for homes along the river here in our county in MI also. So much rain this past week and 4 more days of it coming this week. Farmers are discouraged, can’t plant crops. Glad you were able to enjoy some sun and go boating. Lola is quite the salty sea dog! Looks very happy and content in Daddy’s arms. The dam pictures say it all, regarding the rain. Flags look great, and enjoyed Mr. Heron keeping watch! Thanks Mary!
The lakes and rivers here are at full capacity…I have never seen Jordan Lake so high…love seeing Lola having a great time on the boat…I love seeing the lakefront dressed for the patriotic holidays!!
Awww, Mary. Such a lovely post. I so enjoy your photography skills. Here in the Midwest, we are still reeling from three months of flooding of the Platte and Missouri Rivers. It can be truly devastating to see and experience the power of water.
It looks as though your hubby is truly enjoying life with his puppy. I’ll tell you what,…nothing tugs at my heartstrings like seeing a man not being shy about showing affection for his dog. I am so happy that Lola has fit right in with your home, and has nestled herself right into your hearts.
Happy Fathers Day to Lola’s dad❤️
Always love seeing sweet Lola and your lake! Glad you didn’t have any flooding and keep those flags flying!
