DIY Patriotic Tussie Mussies

I have a fun little DIY for your Independence Day celebration, Patriotic Tussie Mussies! These Tussie Mussies celebrate the Red, White and Blue while adding some vintage charm as a decoration or party favor for the 4th of July!

They’re also fun to assemble and go together quickly once you have all your supplies gathered together.

To make these patriotic tussie mussies, you’ll need some scrapbook paper.

I had some patriotic paper left over from  hoisting sails on cupcakes and sailing into summer. Vintage Nation 12″ x 12″ Cardstock Paper Pack from the Paper Studio is still available at Hobby Lobby. You can also find single sheets of scrapbook paper in every pattern imaginable at Hobby Lobby or Michaels. These tussie mussies would be fun to create for any holiday, birthday or celebration!

In addition to the scrapbook paper, I used silver tinsel chenille stems, silver metallic ribbon from my Christmas stash (note the 2006 date on the spool of ribbon. . .yes, I am a hoarder ), patriotic tinsel garland from Dollar Tree, leftover cupcake picks and some patriotic three-dimensional stickers from the scrapbook aisle at Michaels.

I wanted my tussie mussies to be sized for the plates on my Red, White and Liberty Blue Table, so I cut the paper into 8 x 8 inch squares. After rolling these cones, I decided I preferred them with some pattern on the inside, instead of the white back of the paper visible.

 I glued a 4 x 8 inch scrap of stars & stripes paper left from trimming it, to the back. A glue stick makes it easy to adhere the two pieces of paper together, without wrinkles.

Roll your 8 inch square piece of scrapbook paper into a cone, overlapping the paper edges slightly.  Use a binder clip to help keep the cone shape while gluing.

I cut a small piece of tinsel garland to hang from the bottom and placed it inside the cone before gluing the cone shut with a glue gun. In addition to pattern, the extra layer of paper on inside of top of the cone adds some stability for hanging. Use a hole punch and thread your chenille stem through the holes, wrapping the ends to secure it. I used two chenille stems twisted together per cone.

I ran a bead of glue to attach some silver metallic ribbon on the glued seam for a decorative touch. It also helps camouflage any extra glue that might show on your seam. Use the ribbon, decorative braid or trim of your choice. Once the chenille handle was in place, I glued a piece of tinsel garland along the inside top edge of the cone. I removed the toothpick from the paper fan cupcake pick for a base for a 3-D patriotic sticker that I glued on the front of the cone.

Now comes the fun part:

Fill your cones with paper shred and add your goodies, treats or candy to your tussie mussies! I pledge allegiance to the Dollar Spot at Target where I found packages of patriotic bubble wands, straws and pinwheels. . .just the right price and fun to the delight of my inner 4-year old. ;) Sparklers and party picks add a nod to the Red, White and ‘Bloom’ for the 4th of July.
