Celebrate summer and create an arrangement and centerpiece for your table using fruit and flowers with these easy shortcuts and tips, no floral foam required.

We’re celebrating summer with peaches for this week’s MMB edition! I pulled out my Mikasa Antique Orchard dinnerware, which provided my arrangement and table inspiration this week.

I started with a galvanized caddy for a centerpiece for the table. As the caddy isn’t watertight, I decided to use mason jars inside the caddy to hold the flowers. Ball Elite Wide Mouth Pint Jars were just the right height (3.75 inches) for the caddy.
Use newspaper or plastic bags from the grocery store, placing them between the jars to keep them from shifting, once they’re filled with water and flowers. This method also makes it easy to replace individual flowers as they fade and change your vase water. Pack your plastic bags or newspaper in tightly so they can support the weight of the fruit in the arrangement.
I cut some Endless Summer Hydrangeas that have faded from the vibrant spring blues to the muted and softer greens of summer and are almost to the ‘papery’ stage and ready to dry. Use the alum-dipping method for your hydrangeas to keep them from wilting and always add the floral preservative packets to your vase water for longer lasting flowers. Floral preservative packets usually come with your flowers or my grocery store has a basket of packets you can help yourself to when buying flowers. If you don’t have any floral preservative, you can make your own with this easy formula.
Pears, grapes, berries and peaches provide a colorful harvest of fruit on Antique Orchard dinnerware, so I took some liberties with our ‘peach’ theme this week! Clusters of grapes as well as pears were tucked in between the jars and added to the centerpiece.
Alstroemeria and peach spray roses joined the hydrangeas next, along with some greens sprigs of bupleurum.
I tucked in some peaches to nestle the arrangement among the flowers and to fill in any bare space between the jars.
I had to do a little ‘googling’ to identify the bupleurum, which is the light and airy filler flower with little yellow blooms.
A fun side note: the common name for bupleurum is Hare’s Ear! 🐰 You learn something new everyday while blogging. ;)
I loved this galvanized ribbed caddy when I spied it at HomeGoods. It’s a good height for the table as it’s not too tall to block the view from the person sitting across from you.
I was all aflutter when I found this botanical fruit patterned tablecloth with the addition of butterflies. . .
Portmeirion Botanical Garden flatware is serving up more butterflies and blooms.

I must admit that when I saw a sneak peek of your table I fell totally in love all over again with your Mikasa Antique Orchard dinnerware and the tablecloth. The table so depicts the wonderful fruits of summer and you so beautifully present them on this gorgeous table setting. I so love it when you create a floral arrangement in the long caddy and had to chuckle when you spoke of your googling the filler for the arrangement. I used that filler and could not find the name of it and a reader identified it for me…bupleurum or “hare’s ear” … i was at Trader Joe’s one day and someone picked up a bunch of that and said, “I wonder what this is?” I immediately said that I forgot its botanical name, but it is commonly known as hare’s ear. She looked at me like I was some kind of expert…ha!!! :) I love the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month as I get to spend it with you and my wonderful blooms friends! Have a fabulous week Mary!

Oh Mary, this table is so beautiful! I love the tablecloth and your choice of flowers and fruit for the arrangement is gorgeous.
I cannot say enough about how much I love this, Mary. You are so keen to pick up the nuances of the movement of the sun and seasons in the garden and reflect that in your tablescapes so perfectly. That tablecloth is everything! The peak of summer season is seen in the peaches (and other fruits) & butterflies, and yet you show hints of the waning summer through the plaid cloths & hydrangeas. So, so wonderful in all the details.
It is a beautiful post and inspirational as always. As I wandered through the photos, it occurred to me that a rustic, wooden container with a handle ~ in our collection for years could stand in for the ribbed caddy. I pulled it out a few weeks ago but it has been hanging out without a purpose. Click! I see a centerpiece coming on. Thank you, Mary.

Dear Mary, I absolutely love this tablescape. I have Noritake Royal Orchard china and it would be lovely with just this treatment. However, I have not been able to locate your wonderful tablecothe (I looked on Amazon but nothing specific in the title is making it a challenge) or the gorgeous napkins. You don’t mention their origin the notes at all that I’ve seen. Would you mind providing any details you may have on these items.

Hi Deanna, Glad you found the tablecloth :) The napkins were from Pier 1’s fall line several years ago. They may have something similar this fall. Check online around the end of July / early August. ♥
