If you’re looking for a perennial that is low-maintenance, blooms repeatedly for years with little attention, tolerates the heat and drought and a wide variety of soil conditions, look no further than the daylily!
Happy Monday! I hope you’re staying cool! We had a brief reprieve from the heat with temperatures in 80s instead of 90s for a few days but heat and humidity have been steadily creeping back up. The garden is starting to look a little peaked and most of the daylilies have finished blooming . . .*sniff*.
You can’t beat daylilies in the garden for their reliability, hardiness and big, colorful blooms. The daylily’s botanical name, Hemerocallis, means “beauty for a day” as each bloom only remains open for a single day. Depending on the variety, the bloom season can last 30 to 40 days or longer. Blooming starts in late spring and can continue into early fall.
For best results, plant daylilies where they’ll get six hours or more of direct sunlight each day. Daylilies will also grow in partial shade, but will produce fewer flowers. Daylilies are easy to transplant, quick to multiply and relatively free from pests. They can be enjoyed as a pop of color in a garden bed among other perennials or massed together and planted in drifts.
Flowers appear on stalks called ‘scapes’, with multiple flowers blooming on a single scape. Each daylily plant has numerous scapes and can produce hundreds of flowers in a season. To keep the plants looking their best, snap off the spent flowers, taking care not to disturb nearby buds.
Daylilies will grow for many years without any attention, but the plants will produce more flowers if they are divided about every 5 years. Divide daylilies after the plants have finished blooming in late summer or early fall. Dig up the entire plant and cut or pull the clump apart. You can keep the divisions larger or you can divide the plant into individual fans. The fans can then be planted close together to fill in areas of your garden. Before replanting, trim the foliage back to a height of about 6 inches and cover with 1 to 2 inches of mulch.
In celebration of the daylily, I’m sharing my favorite online source, Smokey’s Gardens.
Located in Coldwater, Michigan, Smokey’s Gardens is one of the largest daylily growers in the United States, with over three thousand varieties of daylilies and over five million plants, including thousands of seedlings and daylily seed production.
I’ve purchased several varieties of daylilies from Smokey’s Gardens. One of my favorites is ‘Lake Norman Sunset’ Daylily.
You’d think it would have been available locally but I could only find it online in Michigan :)
Shopping the collections can save you up to 40% including shipping charges. Each collection contains six daylilies, with two fans of each daylily.
The Rebloomer Collections are among my favorites as they have more than one bloom cycle for extended bloom time in your garden.
(Collection items may change at any time due to inventory levels.)
There is also a Fragrant Rebloomer Collection.
I’m sharing some Daylily Love and giving away a Rebloomer Collection to two winners!

my favorite was my salem witch daylily but it died this year. it was a very deep purple with a bright yellow center.
It’s hard to tell which is my favorite since I have a nice collection. Years ago there was an awesome Daylily farm just south of me about an hour in Amish country. An older gentleman owned it but has since passed away. The farm closed down as far as I know..too bad…But anyway I think the light pink or peach are my fav’s. Thanks for the giveWay.i so enjoy your blog, your gardens etc.
Mary, Your daylilies are just beautiful and I love your butterfly visitor! ‘Heavenly Hash’ Daylily is a favorite in my garden and is a paler version of your Lake Norman Sunset. Thank you for the giveaway and a chance to add more blooms to my garden. I’m a long-time follower! Teresa
The photos are beautiful. My favorite is the Nile Flower.
I am an email subscriber.
I pinned your beautiful collage! Thank you again for the chance to win. Teresa
Good morning Mary, Hope you enjoyed the break in the heat. I sure did and used some time to toss some cases annuals and cut back some out of control perennials. We used to raise and sell Daylilies in Virginia so it is really hard to pick a favorite. I always love the big yellows but some of my most loved were ones we cultivated ourselves and named after our grandchildren. One great one was named Samanthas’ blush for our first . It is a large diamond dusted pale apricot family and blooms mid season.
I love the pinks and deeper colors.
To name one specific plant as my fav, is not possible. My only prerequisites for daylilies is, they must complement a pastel garden….I love the ruffled petals, and the beautiful array of colors, and because gardening should be fun, the ease in care for these stunners. makes one love them, if possible, even more. My favorite is always those in my garden, . Thanks for your frequent posts…I look forward to each one.
Lovely post, as always! I recently visited a daylily farm in Anderson, SC, and purchased “Dream Tide” so it will be my new favorite!
I have also pinned a couple of photos!
Hard to pick a favorite. Have always enjoyed the ease of daylillies and the dark purple varieties never disappoint. Love your photos. Thanks for sharing.
I love the burgandy and orange ones I think the best. Yellow is next on my list. We have a lot of those old timey ones a dear friend gave us when we got married. We’ve moved a bunch of them the three times we’ve moved since we’ve been married. We’ll be taking another bunch from this yard next year when we finish our house. It’s just a way to remember the wonderful lady who meant so much to us.
It’s so hard to pick a favorite, but I think I favor the yellow daylilies more. They just look like cheery sunshine all the time. And I agree about the weather. Nice to have a few days break. I am only an out 25 miles from you, and I enjoyed the break from heat and humidity. So much easier to work outside!
These are all so pretty. I love the peach colored ones. Thanks for the giveaway !
Hi Mary: Your daylilies are stunningly beautiful. I love all the colors and shapes. I have a few daylilies too and just love them. My favorite is called Purple Many Faces. Its a very bright vivid purple spider lily with a lime green throat. I subscribe to your emails. I pinned a couple of your photos on “Flower” Pinterest board. I like you on Facebook too. Enjoy the rest of your summer!
Here is my additional comment to let you know that I pinned some of these beautiful photos to my “Flower” board on Pinterest.
Beautiful daylillies. My favorite is King Royale but I love them all. We have some daylillies that we planted at our first house. They tolerate moving, hot temps and lots of neglect. The reblooming collections look amazing
I love Pandora’s Box! Beautiful center on this Lily. Thank you.
Lake Norman sun set. I was gifted some lovely day lilies from a friend who is no longer living. Their memory is still with me whenever they bloom. I feel so blessed that they shared them with me. Thanks for such a beautiful blog post!
When I moved to to the NC Coast I transplanted a few from my previous yard. They looked similar to the Hamlet. Only problem is the deer like them as much as I do!
Thank you for this chance! I love the Jedi Dot Pierce l think the best, but love them all! I do subscribe to your emails, and I also pinned one in my garden board on Pinterst.
You have the most gorgeous daylilies! So funny that you have to get the Lake Norman Lily from Michigan!…Thank you for the opportunity of the giveaway….I love daylilies that have a combination of colors that include yellow. Happy Monday Mary!
As always, you made my morning. I am ordering 3 sets to get started on a new grouping in a new garden. Thanks for the information.
So beautiful!!
I love most colors of daylilys, but spiders are my favorite.
I love all of the beautiful daylillies and have the Stella d pro in my yard now along with some pinkish ones. I would love to add the Nile flower, and Pandora’s Box! Thank you Mary for sourcing these beautiful collections. I didn’t know they had fragrant daylillies. Stunning colors!!
I pinned the Lake Norman Sunset-

I pinned a photo – thank you!
Oh Mary, your collection of daylilies is fabulous, and what a giveaway you are offering!! My favorite is Sultry Summer, but they’re all beautiful in a mass. I appreciate you telling us your source. How wonderful to have a Lake Norman Sunset variety!! I pinned your collage of the daylilies.
Temperatures were wonderful here last week, too, with low humidity, but all that has come to an end. Enjoy your week on your lovely lake. 😘
Love to follow your blog for your beautiful pics and great give away!! I love a mix of colors especially the purples and pinks!! Pinned this so I can come back to it easily!!
The yellow of Stella D’Oro is my fav! I planted these because my sweet grandmother’s name was Stella. I’m so glad I found this site! Love your posts….
Your post is beautiful today Mary. All the flowers are so beautiful but my favorite are the peach colored lilies. They are so delicate and feminine looking. I didn’t know you can divide the lilies, so I will do that this fall. Thanks as always for so much great information.
Thank you for this gorgeous day lily post. I have ones in my garden in Washington state that I brought with me when I moved from Connecticut. I just couldn’t leave them behind! I love that you can divide them & share with friends. The dark burgundy ones are my favorites.
My fav is Sutry Summer. Can’t believe there is a Lake Norman lily but you were the winner to locate it. I love the ruffles that show on many of the blooms.
These are so pretty! Someone’s going to be a very lucky recipient of these gorgeous bulbs. I can’t wait to see the ones I transplanted from mine into my daughter’s garden. She’s been so busy this past month, I haven’t been over to see them, but am looking forward to her break in schedule starting this week!
Beautiful!
Oh, my! Just what I need — another place to order day lilies! I normally order from Oakes. I give Smokey’s a look. Thank you, I think!!!!!!!!!
My favorite variety is “Country Melody.” Love your posts and thank you for the giveaway opportunity!
I also pinned a couple of your beautiful photos! Thanks again. :)
I love them all! I’ll have to say Pandoras Box is my favorite today. I’ve pinned this so I can come back to it.
They are gorgeous. Love the colors. Mine all look similar to yours. I have about thirty different ones.
I love any and all colors. Thank you.
Your day lilies are gorgeous! I’d love to try the fragrant extended bloom ones. Great price!
I really need info about your gravel/stepping stone pathway pictured in the background of the picture with the white chair. What size gravel did you use; how deep is the gravel; how do you keep weeds/grass at bay in it; what is under it; can you remove leaves and other debris with a blower? Phew! Long question! Please make my day with a reply! I would love, love, love a long tour of your garden! Thanks!
I always thought my favorite was Stella D’Oro; but I absolutely love the color of the one next to the white chair in the photo. Thank you for this delightful giveaway!
I’m a follower of your blog – thank you!
Years ago a dear lady in my church gave me 5 fans of one I thought she called Damascus Road but with research and a little reflection she might have said Damask Rose. These are the most hardy prolific day lily I know of. I have literally give away hundreds in the 30 years hence. I think my all time favorite is named Master’s Cloak, a deep pink with a burgandy eye. It is a tetra ploid and the the blooms are huge. Blooms from end of May to early July here. I do enjoy reading your posts, recipes and wonderful garden pictures.
Oh my goodness, it would be hard to pick a favorite! I love the big yellow ones with the peach centers, but Strawberry Candy has to be on the top of my list. I have one called Carrot Crest that is a frilly ruffled peachy orange, with a deep red orange center. It is wonderful, but I love all of them! I would love to win this awesome giveaway. Thanks Mary!
Well, I’m not sure I can pick one color for a favorite, I love all my daylilies! Maybe the pretty yellow ones are my favorites, or maybe the deep red – or maybe it’s all of them!
I follow your blog via email.
I pinned one of your beautiful photos to my “Garden” board. Thank you!
There isn’t a day lily I don’t love ~ they are all my favorite :)
All daylilies are beautiful but I love the one
named Pandoras Box. ❤️💐
I don’t have a favorite color or variety of day lily. I love them all. However I agree the rebloomers give more bang for the buck. I also gravitate to the dwarf Day lilies as I have a smaller garden. Thanks for the beautiful day lily pics.
Whenever I see daylilies I think of my late mother. This fall, when it begins to cool down, I will be cleaning out an area in our backyard for a new flower garden bed. I would love to have daylilies incorporated in it, I like the pinks and peach colors, though the Sultry Sunset is beautiful. I pinned a few of your lovely pictures to me Garden board. I follow you on Facebook and gmail. Love your beautiful garden and lake views.
My favorite is the plain old tiger lily that edged our wrap around porch where I grew up. It brings warm memories of the warmth of family, childhood play and a sister who is still my dearest friend. I have been a subscriber for years and thank you for this opportunity.
I adore day lilies for their heat tolerance. I had them in the Dallas area and now moved to Oklahoma and the heat here is brutal. They bloom in spite of it and that is unusual. I think I have tried every color I could find and love them all! We have a problem with deer where we live and had to replant most of the front yard landscaping. Now I would love to add some flowers and I am no longer able to do as much gardening as I like so their low maintenance would be perfect. Thank you so much for reminding me of just how big a variety there are. I think they will be my next purchase for my garden!
On your recommendation I order several Daylilies from Smokys this spring. Some were larger scapes than others. The small ones have sort of disappeared, but I hope they are growing underground and will pop up next summer. We live in zone 7 in a dry climate. I’ve tried to keep them well watered. I think I will sprinkle a little slow release fertilizer around them. My favorite Daylily in your photos was “Buffy’s Doll” My nickname was Buffy and as a little girl, I was never without my little baby doll. I love the apricot colors but also the bright reds and purples.
Lovely post as always! I purchased several daylilies 10 years ago from a friend in Portland, OR that raises them. The varieties are varied but my favorite is the bright yellows/oranges. I don’t have any fragrant varieties and would love to include them in my garden. I love your posts and appreciate your interesting garden lore.
My mother in law grew daylilies for years and cultivated them, selling or giving them away when she divided them. She is still living but in a nursing home now but whenever I see daylilies I think of her My favorites are the old fashioned solid yellows and solid oranges although the variegated are quite pretty. Thank you for the opportunity to win some.
I enjoyed your post so much! It is hard to choose however I really like the white colored varieties and loved Highland Lord.
May May ( my birthday is in May) and Nile Flower… I never thought of planting these, I always thought they would be difficult. Thanks for the information
Your daylilies are lovely! I love the pink ones. Most of mine are yellow varieties. I also have the old fashioned orange variety that we rescued from my husband’s grandmother’s garden when the house was torn down. Very special.
Sorry, I don’t have a favorite, as all of them excite me. Your pictures are beautiful and I hope to start and expand my collection. Love your posts.
Love the varieties but especially your Lake Norman sunset- hope I win. Would love to add new ones to my garden.
Mary, as always, you have outdone yourself! I look forward to each new post from you. I love daylilies, especially rebloomers. I have lots of just plain old “ditch lilies” on a hill behind my house and they delight me just as much as some of my “dressier” ones. I have one that blooms early out front that is the most gorgeous color of orange, more like sunset. It glows! I pinned this entire post. Hope I win! Thanks!
The pictures are all beautiful. I especially love the peach colored with the cranberry markings and the cranberry daylily with the yellow throat.
I loved the Carol Todd variety on Smokey’s Gardens website. I have only the old-fashioned orange variety, and would love to add some new ones to my garden.
Pinned the cranberry daylily with the yellow throat to my gardening ideas on Pinterest.
I pinned the Buffy’s Doll pic from your blog. Georgeous!
Ahhh, Mary, you tempt me, you tempt me, but I’m going to pass on entering as I’ve made the hard decision to not add any more flowers and actually to start giving away to empty a few beds. I don’t have as much sun as I would like (mostly shade) and what flower beds I have also need to be thinned out to perform better. But to answer your question, I love the beautiful Asiatic Star Gazer lillies and of course my new ultimate favorite now is the awesome Lake Norman that you have introduced us to. It tickles me that you have to order your lillies from the store in Coldwater, MI, my great state, hehe. I know if you, your Hubby and sweet Lola could ever make the trip up here, you would LOVE our Great Lakes also. Thank you for sharing these beautiful flowers, they are so lovely. (Oh, my soap molds arrived and now I need to go to Hobby Lobby for the other supplies, so excited about this fun project! Thanks again! ) ❤
Wow, how gorgeous these day lilies are. No favorite here, as I love all of the combination of colors. Thanks for pointing out the website. Have a lovely week.
I really love the day lillies and how they bloom in the summer. I didn’t know they had so many colors and varieties. I loved the ones with the purple hues that you have pictured.
They’ll look lovely in our garden. Thanks!
Oh goodness, a Lake Norman Sunset Daylily! So fantastic!! I had a few daylilies for a while, but they have stopped blooming…alas, my black thumb prevails…mainly because as much as I love flowers I do not love the gardening part, so I will continue to enjoy my green thumbed friend’s gardens! Beautiful photos Mary, and please give my entry to a deserving gardener!
Jenna
Oh gosh, I absolutely love daylilies and am a member of our local Daylily Society. Your collection is so beautiful. I’m currently collecting “doubles” and if I had to choose a favorite it would be Double Red Royal.

Thank you so much. Your daylilies are gorgeous but the apricot ones are beyond. Love the butterfly picture on one of the lilies too. So beautiful.

Beautiful photos, Mary! What a nice giveaway and we all love daylilies!
Beautiful Mary, just gorgeous! Love daylilies, all colors are my favorites! The Lake Norman perfectly matches the sunset. I transplanted some this year & hope they bloom next as this is my first attempt at growing them. 🤞 Have a great week and stay cool! Clara ❤️
The Pandoras Box variety is my favorite. Our house is a brown brick, so the brown colors in the Pandoras Box would really work well with our home.

My favorite daylily is Black Plush…………….velvet like petals in deep purple with a golden throat. I am so happy to learn of this daylily company. All of your photos just take my breath away.
My favorite this year was anything that did not get chomped by the deer! I planted about 20 assorted varieties from Gilbert H Wild, and every time a bloom was just about ready to bloom– MUNCH. Yours are lovely.

I don’t know the name of my favorite day lily, but it is a peach color and the rest stop going on I 40 at Marion has an abundance of them. They are so pretty in June when I make my annual trip up to Lake Juanluska. I have also pinned this.
Thank you for the info on day lilies. We had a generous space of day lilies by our pool in a previous home and I realized this summer that I need to find a perfect spot in our new home. I was reminded this spring when I saw out my front window a neighbor adding to their daylillies. This post is the perfect thing to start off my list making for this project.
Love the pictures you posted–but they are what I’ve come to expect after subscribing to your blog just shortly after you started it! It is the one I will never “unfollow” Thanks for the chance to add to my daylily collection!

Most of the daylilies in my collection are variations of the old orange type.
Mary, I had no idea there were so many varieties of daylilies . I looked at the Smokey’s Garden site and it was so hard to pick a favorite. After looking at many of their daylilies, I realized that I was very attracted to the flowers that had a ruffled edge. Three of my favorites were:Pat Kirchner, Parnet’s Pride and Laura E. Davis. I would love to win the Rebloomer collection. Thank you. MM
I am an email subscriber, wouldn’t want to miss one of your lovely posts. MM
My first comment seems to have been lost. Sorry if it later appears. I went to Smokey’s Garden to look at all the different daylilies. I had no idea there were so many. I seem to be partial to the flowers with a ruffl edge. Three of my favorites were: Pat Kirchner, Parent’s Pride, and Laura E. Davis. I would love to win the Rebloomer collection. thank you, MM

Spiderman daylily……large bright red with yellow center. I bought it years ago because at the time my grandson was a huge Spiderman fan.
Just wanted to comment on the beautiful photos. Here in Jersey, I’ve had many swallow tails come to my garden just not the black ones.
I love the Stella del Oro day lilies, although I would love any of them that I can get into my garden. We just moved by a lake (finally) and the previous owner was a master gardener and she has some amazing things growing. I need to ADD to them! Hope I win!
I love all the colors of day lilies even the common everyday orange ones. They should be the answer to a prayer in the west side of my house which is too hot for much else! My lantana is doing extremely well there at the corner of the house and the day Lillie’s would be a grand addition.
Love daylilies…partial to pinks and reds. Thanks for such a great gift!
Thank you for this beautiful post, Mary. I love all the yellow colors and pale apricot. Pinned.
Mary,…I couldn’t pick just one image to “pin” so not only did I do your heading montage but almost all of the other pictures of the flowers themselves—so beautiful! Would love to win some so I could take such amazing pictures!!!
I so enjoy your daily posts. My favorite daylily is By the Riverside which I bought sight unseen for the name. It is deep pink with touches of yellow. I also love Bela Lugosi which is a fun deep, deep maroon.
Oooooo! I love daylilies! All of the rebloomers are so beautiful it was hard to pick a favorite, but May May or Jedi Dot Pierce are both really pretty.

Lovely!
I also like the Lake Norman Sunset daylily. Has a tropical flair! Wonder if these would grow in Miami, Florida???
Hi Stephanie, Here’s some info for growing daylilies in Florida: https://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/ep006
I love the Stella del Oro daylilies but really they are all so beautiful. I am also an email subscriber.

I pinned your beautiful bouquet in your chair to my “How Does Your Garden Grow?” board.
Hi Mary, I’m late commenting as we have been out of town. I would be thrilled to win a “rebloomer” collection of daylilies and extend the growing season. My favorite colors are yellows, whites and purple/blues in the garden, which are a favorite of the bees too. 🐝
Pinned your daylily with butterfly to my garden board. Thank you Mary!
Hi Mary! I have learned so much from you. Do you have any tricks to be sure your rebloomers actually bloom more than once? I have several varieties that were sold as rebloomers, but just don’t. My daylilies have been finished for a long time in MD with an occasional Stella showing a touch of yellow.
Thank you!
Hi Barbara, Deadheading them daily so they can put their energy into blooms rather than seed is the key I think. You can find more information here: https://dengarden.com/gardening/How-To-Keep-Stella-De-Oro-Daylilies-Blooming-All-Season-Long
Thank you! I love every one of your posts!
Thank you for the giveaway Mary, please throw my name into the hat! I just adore daylilies for their variety and how easy they are to grow. I love them all but am especially fond of the bi-color and double ones.
I love ALL of your daylilies but ‘Lake Norman Sunset’ Daylily would be at the top of my list. We just bought a farm with quite a bit of acreage and I am planning on planting hundreds of daylilies as they are easy to maintain once established where we are. Thanks so much for the chance to win some. Have a blessed day!
I really like the color of “Only One”, but truly it’s hard to choose a favorite. They are all beautiful!
I have pinned several photos
One of my all time favorite daylilies – Cherry Cheeks. I wish it was a re-bloomer!
Those lillies are so beautiful. Thank you for sharing.
