The World’s Best Antidepressant and National Dog Day

August 26th is National Dog Day. . .

But if you’re a dog owner, every day is paws for celebration!

National Dog Day was founded in 2004 by Pet & Family Lifestyle Expert and Animal Advocate, Colleen Paige. It’s celebrated August 26th every year to encourage dog ownership of all breeds, mixed and pure, and embraces the opportunity for all dogs to live a happy, safe and abuse-free life.

The National Dog Day Foundation supports all breeds and varieties of dogs and discourages purchasing from unethical backyard breeders and puppy mills; instead, supporting reputable breeders or adopting from rescue homes.

Health benefits of owning a dog:

The world’s best antidepressant has 4 legs, a wagging tail and comes with unconditional love. 🐾🐾

Lots of entertainment and rough and tumble fun with a new puppy in our house right now . . .

Dogs are a great way to beat the blues with unconditional love and licks, and a laugh when you need it!

They also give their owners a sense of purpose, particularly important for the elderly or sick, as dogs provide companionship and help with feelings of loneliness.

My mother-in-law’s pups, Maddie and Zoe, were a huge comfort and boost to her mental health and overall sense of well-being after my father-in-law passed away.

Studies have shown that having a dog in the home can actually lower a child’s likelihood of developing related allergies by as much as 33 percent. Children exposed early on to animals tend to develop stronger immune systems overall.

A dog can fill your heart with love (and free kisses!) and help improve the overall health of your heart too. Heart-related studies conducted by the CDC and NIH, found that pet owners exhibited decreased blood pressure, cholesterol and triglyceride levels ~ all of which can ultimately minimize their risk for having a heart attack down the road.

For those who have already experienced a heart attack, research also indicates that patients with a dog tend to have better recovery rates. These benefits are thought to be connected with dogs’ tendency to help reduce or at least control their owners’ overall stress levels.

Having a dog may help you improve or maintain your fitness levels, getting outdoors, enjoying some fresh air with daily walks. Walking your dog also leads to more conversations with neighbors, other dog owners, etc. and helps you stay socially connected. People tend to feel more willing to engage and more at ease with a person who is with their dog.

Freekibble.com was launched in 2008, as the vision of then 11 year-old, Mimi Ausland. Mimi wanted to feed the hungry dogs and cats at her local shelter. “There are 10’s of thousands of dogs and cats in animal shelters across the country, all needing to be fed a good meal.” With this goal in mind, Freekibble was created.

Having a dog will bless you with many of the happiest days of your life, and one of the worst days.

Lola and Sophie provide you and us, the readers, double benefits. They are so precious. Thank you for sharing them. My husband and I went to see the movie, The Art of Racing in the Rain, a powerful message of a dog’s unconditional love. If you haven’t seen it, you may want to do so; but take a box of tissues.

Mary, thank you for your wonderful message today and of course the tribute to Chloe and Gracie. The heartbreak is worth the joy they bring us even though at times the tears are so very hard to bear. Lola and Sophie are lucky little girls as are you and your husband to be able to share and enjoy their lives.

I love seeing your little ones!! They really do make our lives whole with their unconditional love. Our lives would just seem so empty without them. I have grown-up with dogs always in my life and will always have one.

Thanks for your lovely post. My problem with dogs is that unfortunately, I’m allergic to dog salvia. It’s awful as I have always loved dogs. From my allergist I have learned that studies have found that any pet that requires care i.e. cats, horses, etc., are also very good for providing humans with unconditional love as well as keep people from being lonely. We have had cats for almost all our 45 years of marriage and to lose one is like losing a part of one’s self. They are so precious, loving and caring. I know about the last two first hand after having a very difficult surgery and having to go to rehab. Gone for an entire month from home and when I did get home our two cats spent every hour with me all day and close by at night. If we’re gone for several hours, they greet us at the front door. Maybe they were dogs in another life….lol…

We just adopted a Scottie who was rescued from a puppy mill. She has been in a cage all of her life and has all the emotional scars that you would imagine. She is our second Scottie Rescue, our first is Miss Ginny and she is the best dog. She is helping to teach her new sister how to have a happy rest of her life.

That last video brought tears to my eyes! Your little munchkins were adorable playing too, I can’t tell you how many times a day I look at my dogs and smile, my very favorite thing to see is a dog in full gallop, I always stop and admire! So many darling pics and ideas, I can barely cook for us, you doggie treats always make me smile!

Mary, I love your blog and your dogs are so ADORABLE! I just wanted to let you know that I re-posted your recipe for the frozen yogurt/berry snacks. I credited you in the post so I hope you don’t mind that I have shared this with my subscribers. Also, I did a post on Instagram, but could not tag you. I researched your blog and see you may not have an Instagram account. I am so very careful on making sure I pass credit along where it is due. My dogs, by the way, love the frozen treats, especially here in our hot Phoenix summers. Have a happy Labor Day!
