Extend the twinkle season beyond Christmas with a Winter Nesting Tree, decorated with snowflakes, icy branches, glittery nests, pine cones and bird ornaments.
Happy Wednesday! I’m back as promised to share photos of our ‘Winter Nesting Tree’.
I’m always a little blue after Christmas when the tree comes down. A couple of years ago, I decided to transform the Christmas tree into a ‘Winter Nesting Tree’ after New Years, a cheery solution for the months of January and February when it’s cold and gray outside.
The lights and sparkle of the tree help make the transition from Christmas to winter easier and makes the house a little cozier and brighter.
We enjoyed it so much that I decided to continue the tradition.
Nautical Nick cruised back to attic for another year, along with all the red and green, to make way for sparkling snowflakes, frosty branches and nesting birds for winter.
The top of the tree is decorated with icy branches, found at Michaels on clearance at 80% off a couple of years ago.
I cut them apart to make more branches . . .
And they join large sparkly snowflake picks at the top of the tree.
Snowy white bands of sparkling ribbon were found at Hobby Lobby a couple of years ago . . .
Adding some dimension and a wintry mix to the tree.
Pine cone ornaments add a little shimmer and sparkle. . .
Bird ornaments collected over the years, flocked to the tree. . .
Some sparkly . . .
Some jute. . .
And some glass.
And a parliament of owls have gathered on the tree. . .
I found most of the owl ornaments at Hobby Lobby and Target. Hobby Lobby’s ornaments are 50% off starting in October.
Whoooooo would have guessed there are so many varieties of owls. . .🦉

I always love seeing your nesting tree, Mary! I still have my bedroom tree up, and it’s decorated with snowmen and icicles. I was thinking about turning it into a Valentine tree. A little sparkle does help with the winter blahs.

Such a sweet idea, you obviously don’t have cats! It’s a miracle my trees survive dec, I cannot imagine an upright extension! I put up a couple of theme trees, I have a dedicated wildlife tree, I too have nesting birds all during the season, very calming tree, until I wake up every morning to a flock of dead birds strewn about the room… The scariest was finding the 10″ owl topper missing… For days! Must be nice having a staid tree in and out of season!

Very pretty Mary, love the crisp white curling ribbon and the icy branches at the top. All the birdies are sweet and make the winter tree extra special. I love my winter bird tree also, makes the evenings warm with its pretty glow during our l o n g, cold Michigan winters. Stay cozy and Snuggle on! P.s. Oh MY! They are soooooo good! Hubby and I each had 2 , hehe! Opted to bake rather go to the Y, haha. Will have to go for sure tomorrow and swim a few more laps. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ these are DELISH! 😁

That is a fabulous idea! We had to take my Christmas tree down much earlier than I like to because the two kitttens new to the household knocked it over and broke some ornaments. I feel sad not to get to enjoy it longer. I usually leave it up until well into Feb. Try to take it down by Valentine’s Day! Have been known to change it to a “Valentine’s Tree.”! But next year I am going to work on decorating a Nesting Tree like yours. You have so many gorgeous snowflake and bird ornaments. I am going to start searching for some so I have plenty for next year.

Mary, I love this idea. I don’t think I can get my guy to agree to the tree up through February, but sure do like the thought. That said, our tree is still up. I’m still savoring the lights at night and the beauty of it all. It’s dressed with gathered tartan ribbon, but the touch of red pleases me. I’m going to be sad to pack up all the beautiful ornaments. Many on our tree are also owls and other woodland animals. I do love the tradition of a decorated tree for Christmas and winter. Love seeing each of these details. I’ll need to check Hobby Lobby and Target next Christmas. Yes, who would have guessed there are so many varieties of owls. You show 9, and I have at least 11 on our tree, all different from the ones you show. Such a pretty winter nesting tree, Mary!
Who would have thought a jute bird could be so exquisite? Love the idea of a winter tree. I think one could even get by with just the snowflakes and sparkles. I also love all of your owls…what a wonderful collection and a way to enjoy them after Christmas.

I have a lot of owl ornaments also, as my Chi Omega sorority mascot is the owl. I have a 3 foot tree just for my owl ornaments, but may need to graduate to a little bigger one before too long!
Love the nesting tree, what a great idea. I envy your cold gloomy winter. I’ve lived in snow country but now am in sunny southern Arizona — where it’s in the 60s and 70s in the days, 40s or 50s at night. Just so wrong! So your pics comfort my nordic genes, thanks!

The gray days of winter need a little light, sometimes a lot! Your bird tree is gorgeous—and I’m keeping my pine garland and lights up in the kitchen sans bows…just for the ‘twinkles’! Grins!

What a stunning, elegant tree! Next year, I’m using this tree as inspiration and I know it will look amazing in my living room. For a tree covered in icicles and snow, it definitely makes one feel warm and cozy. I’m already excited for Christmas 2020 and it’s only January, probably best to not share that detail with my family so soon after the packing up of Christmas 2019!
I’m certain that I’ll never be able to find the long white strands that you purchased from Hobby Lobby a few years back. Any suggestions on how I might be able to make those? I’m afraid if I use felt and have a hidden wire (to keep the curl) that it will look lumpy. Any thoughts would be appreciated!
