Keep the Light: DIY Spring Wreath with Blooming Wellies

I’m trying to keep a ‘spring in my step’ during these uncertain times.

Staying busy with gardening and outdoor projects seems to help and I’ve been puttering around the Potting Shed and doing a little spring clean up.

Gardening can be a great stress reliever even it’s daily small tasks, like weeding, watering, dividing plants or sowing some seeds.

 If you’re able to get outdoors, just reading while listening to the birds while enjoying some fresh air and sunshine can be therapeutic and good for your mental health! If you’re stuck indoors, try watching the birds at the feeder by a window while you’re under a mandatory ‘stay at home’ order or order supplies to create a wreath or a new pair of rainboots to put a spring in your step. You can find just about anything on Amazon, including floral wellies / rainboots.

With our ‘new normal’ of staying at home, I used what I already had to create a blooming wreath for the door of the Potting Shed, starting with a faux forsythia wreath, used here.

A favorite pair of floral wellies are serving as vases to hang on the wreath.

I had an extra package of shower curtain rings that I used to hang watering cans, aka The Chain Gang. The wellies have a rubber tab on the back to hang them on the wreath hanger on the door.

I cut some stems of azaleas that are blooming along with the last couple of daffodils to add to the wellies.

Whenever I cut woody stems for an arrangement whether foliage or flowers, I use a vegetable peeler to strip the outside layers of the  stems. Removing 3 – 4 inches of the outer wood, helps the azaleas ‘drink’ and stay hydrated and fresh longer.

Acrylic cups serve as lightweight vases to hold water tucked inside the wellies.

Tip: Daffodils secrete a sap that can shorten the vase life of other flowers. To use daffodils in a vase with other flowers, cut them and put them in a vase by themselves for at least an hour or longer. After the stems have secreted their sap, they’re ready to add to other flowers in a mixed bouquet as long as you don’t recut the stems again.

I tucked a pair of floral garden tools into the wellies to add some additional blooms.
