I love the little Stephanotis flower. My daughter’s name is Stephanie. She was tiny when she was born. One of my friends said my daughter was a little stephanotis. From that, my daughter’s nickname came about – Otis. She carried a bouquet of stephanotis when she got married five years ago.

      • April 27, 2020 at 12:29 pm

Sarah, this is the sweetest story! I don’t know the Stephanotis, but now I will go see what it is. Stephanie is a beautiful name, and Otis is a cute nickname. Happy Monday!

  34. Donna Conrad
    April 27, 2020 at 7:42 am

My favorite flower is the rose. It is my birth flower. I love the scent, I love wild rose and vine roses the best. I also love gardenia ~ what a beautiful scent! ‘Twas my mother’s favorite. My dad planted several beneath the kitchen window so when my mother was at the sink she could experience the smell of her favorite flower. Also, I love hydrangea. This is my older sister’s favorite. Thus, one of mine, too. She is a Master Gardener, and I have learned much from her. Yet, hydrangea was introduced to both of us by our grandmother who planted them all throughout her own yard, but her favorite was lilies, and Irises, which makes them flowers I love as well. Just as my dad’s favorite is gladiolus! Such a happy word for such a pretty flower to grow a multitude of charming little blooms all along one stem! Of course, yellow daffodils delight me, too, just as much as; pink poinsettias can! And then, not to end, to wrap it up, I sup pose jasmine does the trick to keep me in that trance of how awesome some blooms can be used for perfume…violets for candy, too! My aunt made those for me when we once played “come have tea!” Sweet memories I have of many flowers that I love! Can’t forget camellias ~ brings to mind my Aunt Camille. So many Camellia shows I went to with her! Just like loving poppies and peonies that I do because that aunt’s sister which was my aunt too, those were her favorites, making them mine, too! Lastly, most importantly, being a mom of sons…can’t end this comment without mentioning sunflowers, can I? Many flowers that I love! Many bouquets that I’ve made to display, many I’ve planted picked and pressed in books and framed. Yet, never enough to not want more of. Flowers; reminiscent of the life I’ve been given, the air that I breathe, the joy of the present…this gift of loving flowers will go on forever. Like songs and poems that mention so many. Even in the desert, the cactus grows and there’s a desert rose which brings me “write” back to the beginning🥰❤️😘when I should of mentioned that as a child my fav’s were; pansies and tulips, daisies and bottlebrush, hibiscus and buttercups, cherry blossoms, rounds it out and wraps it up for sure just because cottontails don’t have petals but if they did, they’d be on my list not just in my home!

My favorite flower is peony! Ever since I was a young girl, I loved inhaling the sweet scent of the blousy pouffy puffs by putting my whole face into the blooms. Here in NJ, I await their unfurling in my small garden with such gleeful anticipation. We even plan any trips around their Bloom time to be sure to be home. The full pretty pink petals of Sarah Bernhardts remind me of a prima ballerina’s blooming tutu. As I write this, the peony buds and still round and tight, awaiting the sunshine to return so they can make their joyful debut! Xo

My favorite is peonies! I have some plants that were started many years ago from divisions from my mother’s. I remembered them from when I was a child. We moved here to Lake Norman almost 2 years ago, and my husband dug up a few plants before we moved ( a few weeks after having hip surgery, no less!) These lovely light pink peonies are in bloom right now. A beautiful reminder of my sweet mother.

Tops though are freesia, stock-both are heaven scented, roses of course, hydrangea which I am lucky to have many of-peoonies and lilacs, and orchids. Thanks for spreading your joy.

What a wonderful opportunity! Thank you!
My favorites are iris, bearded especially, since my grandmother grew these long her fence row next to the vegetable garden. Second, and it’s just about first, are tulips. Their simplicity, but capricious nature, makes for such an interesting arrangement.

My favorite flower is the lily especially amaryllis. I can remember when i was a young girl going into my grandmother’s lily bed. She grew amaryllis and for years had been trying to breed a totally white one. She finally got one and I thought that was the most beautiful flower ever. You guessed it right. I picked that lily. I will always remember that day.

Just one? Well, I’d have to say “Roses,” of course! My old fashioned climbing rose (a gift from my mother for my birthday one year) smells like heaven! But I also love lilies and irises and my grandmother’s name was Pansy, so of course I love Pansies too! My mom, who lives with me, has a big pot of them and they have been producing for months now. But I can’t forget Hydrangeas because I love to decorate with them. We love flowers and really, they’re all our favorites!

My heart belongs to daffodils. Their yellow blooms always bring my birthday . Before my Mother passed away, she said …. Don’t forget to dig up those daffodil bulbs❤️. These bulbs had been transplanted from generations before her. So, I dug them up and prayed they would make it to our retirement move to the north Georgia mountains. I’m happy to say , they bloom beautifully here in Blue Ridge, and STILL bring my birthday every year. ❤️

I’m so fickle when it comes to my favorite flower. Right now I’d have to say it’s the Clematis, but when that Peony opens…gorgeous! Then there’s the Rhododendrons…living inthe NW…they take your breath away. Followed by Hydrangeas and Rose’s. I’d say whatever is in bloom at the moment is my favorite…flowers make me happy!

Its so hard to choose but some of my favorites are Columbines, violas, lily of the valley and snowdrops. I love all the old fashioned delicate spring flowers that break the silence of winter and warm your heart when you discover them blooming in the garden. With that said, I don’t think there is a flower that I don’t love.

I live in Texas. Zinnias!!! my Gma grew them and I do too. They are tough flowers that pack a punch of color and last so long. I have always planted them on Mothers Day. Each year in the fall i harvest the heads and let them dry. then In the winter I break them apart into seeds. The week before Mother’s day when I eat lunch with my girlfriends i always give each one a bag of seeds and still have plenty for me. Who knows this year if we will have lunch? I may have to have an outing and drop in each mailbox.

What a lovely book. I love flowers in general. Each one seems to evoke a different memory in my life. When I think of hydrangeas, I think of my baby shower for my second child; where the centerpieces were hydrangeas. Roses remind me of a very dear friend; who is no longer living. I remember her watering her roses every afternoon. Irises remind me of a girl I worked with many years ago, and Gardenias remind me of my grandmother; who died when I was six years old. I remember following her around her garden. It was my grandmother who introduced me to my love of gardening. Now I see my youngest daughter outside, everyday tending to the garden with such care. She reminds me of my grandmother. I guess the love of flowers has been passed down through generations. During this pandemic, my daughter, who is a college student; has started a virtual garden club in our community. She has 38 members and counting. It makes me proud, because she is making a difference in the community and bringing some joy into people’s lives.

While toxic Foxglove also is the source of lifesaving heart medications.

Mary, Not sure that “lightning can strike twice” since I have won a cookbook giveaway, but this book looks wonderful. I would love to win a copy. Picking one favorite flower is impossible, I love most flowers. But, at the top of the list would be spring flowers such as daffodils, tulips, lily of the valley, lilacs, and peonies. I also love roses, bachelor buttons, delphinium and hydrangea. That is just the short list. Thank you for bringing us beautiful visual escapes during this difficult time. I must enjoy other’s flowers since I am not going out and can’t pick up my usual grocery store bouquets.
I hope you and yours continue to be well and safe, MM

Oh, the dilemma of a favorite. We are so blessed to have flowers in our lives. I would have to say, daffodils. To be able to sit outside, with my breakfast, amongst their glorious golden faces is to know their promise of Spring.

Hi Mary – my favorite flower is a snapdragon and the reason is bc when I was a little girl I used to spend most every weekend with my Grandma Elizabeth, and she had the most glorious flower garden you ever saw ! I was mesmerized by it. I would bring my little chair and a book and read out there, watching the bees pollinate. Grandma Elizabeth pretty much taught me everything I know about flowers, and I would help her deadhead the petunias … When we came to the snapdragons she would always tell me to put my finger near the blossom and she would squeeze it gently and pretend to “dragon bite” me. I’m misty-eyed just reminiscing here about it. Anyway I’m writing much too much but that’s my favorite flower 🥰

I was born and raised in Hawaii and the flower that speaks to me the most and is so reminiscent of special celebrations of love is Pikake or Chinese jasmine. The flowers are woven into leis and 49 years ago, it was also part of my wedding bouquet. Not only are the flowers beautiful, but the fragrance is just unforgettable! I love lilacs! My mom had a lilac bush in our yard when I was growing up and when I got my own room as a teenager (have five siblings) I always would cut some lilacs and have them on a table in my bedroom. I have two lilac bushes in my own yard and can’t wait (Ohio is a little behind) to bring some into my house.

Really, a favorite? Just one? No way! During the winter orchids bloomed in my home. A few weeks ago crocuses and daffodils heralded the beginning of Spring. Right now with the drifts of azaleas blooming in our mountain community, I am overwhelmed by their beauty. But soon my baptisia, irises and then roses will come into bloom and they will win my heart. As summer gets in to full swing the roadsides will fill with a myriad of wild flowers and they will amaze. And as fall arrives the beauty of asters, mums and grasses will take their place. Dahlias will thrill in a community garden. But as winter arrives amaryllis and poinsettias will arrive to welcome Christmas into our home…thank you, Lord for making so many beautiful flowers and making it impossible for me to choose a favorite!

Flowers make me happy and always try to have a fresh arrangement of flowers on my table at all times. Also like to have a vase of flowers on my desk especially during the Spring season. Being an oncology nurse flowers brighten anyone’s mood. Hard to pick a favorite flower. During the Spring months love my daffodil arrangements. Summer and Autumn flowers would be zinnias or whatever else is available to cut in my yard. Love going to the farmers market to buy beautiful bouquets. I like to buy local! Since moving from Michigan to Florida six years ago I’ve had to learn a lot about gardening in this climate. One of my favorites is my Passion flower vine, the butterflies and bees LOVE it. It grows like crazy and produces so many flowers and requires basically no care. I also trained a bougainvillea vine over my gate at the side of my house and it looks amazing.
