Nesting in the Potting Shed + Bird Chirping Weather

Happy Monday! We’ve enjoyed some beautiful spring weather recently. . .ideal for nesting season!

A pair of Eastern Bluebirds have been busy feathering their nest and gathering food to feed their brood.

Entertaining to watch as they fly to and fro and hunting up insects for hungry chicks.

Bluebirds are a gardener’s best friend with their voracious appetite for insects and help naturally rid the garden of pests.

They can produce between two and four broods during the spring and summer months.

I chalked up the door of the Potting Shed with a favorite quote and in celebration of ‘bird chirping’ weather . . .

I love the sweet illustrations from The Country Diary of An Edwardian Lady and The Nature Notes of an Edwardian Lady by Edith Holden. I picked them up from a used book seller several years ago.

Beautifully illustrated, Edith Holden’s “nature notes” from 1905, chronicle months of the calendar year with anecdotes, folklore, and poems, and are accompanied by her watercolor paintings of flowers, plants, birds, butterflies and landscape scenes of the British countryside.

I certainly am enjoying bird chirping weather, both in my backyard, and on my morning walks, Mary. Your potting shed looks particularly delightful decked out in chirping decor. Your collection of birdhouses adds such a fun touch. Thank you for starting my morning off with such beauty. xo

I adore your posts 🐦They are especially welcome now, with so much going on. We feed and watch the birds here, also. They always bring a smile.
We have had a pair of bluebirds this Spring who spend all their time flying at the windows of our home. I wish I knew what to do to help them.
So glad our days are so pretty here in NC, though the cold nights are not so good.

    Happy Monday!
Love your bird theme this morning. Your potting shed is so inviting!
Finally, seeing the sun here. Still a bit chilly though.
Our bird feeders are up and seeing Cardinals everywhere.
Love watching them come and go……
Always look forward to your posts.
Have a great day and stay safe!

Good Morning, Mary. Is there a particular source where you purchase your bluebird houses? There is so much debate in Virginia birding circles over the most effective type of bluebird house (Peterson, etc.) but yours seem to be working quite well!
    Thanks!

Hi Susie, No. This birdhouse was came from a craft fair over 25 years ago. I think placement might be more key for attracting bluebirds rather than type :)

Good Morning from Michigan! Thank you for always making my day. We have bluebirds here making a nest in one of our houses. Mother bird comes every morning to knock at the sliding door and say good morning and then later towards evening as if to say good night. They are so beautiful. Seems we have a lot of birds this spring here. Wishing everyone a wonderful day… :)

You’re so lucky to have bluebirds nesting in your yard, Mary! I’m thrilled just to see them in the yard now and then. Love your adorable bird related items in the shed. If I ever visited your yard, I’m sure I would never want to leave. 🤗

Thanks for the beautiful and inspirational posts!

We are still “nesting” here in Co..But we are “scratching” up the ground to plant a small garden and we are finding big fat juicy worms for the Robins to feed their babies. We don’t have nests that we can watch them come and go but a family has a nest in the Colorado blue spruce in the front yard somewhere and Mr Robin is very protective of the tree . My neighbors children are making a playhouse under the tree and I’m hoping not disturbing the family to much.

Mary, you are so amazingly talented. We have bluebirds too and I love watching them, such a flash of blue in the trees and sky. I hadn’t thought about their value as insect eating — just another plus! Thank you for sharing your creativity and lovely photos.

Mary, this has been the best bird chirping weather! I don’t think spring has ever been lovelier. Wonderful shots of the bluebirds! Our bluebirds have been really busy nesting and raising their little ones. I love your bird themed tablescape…perfect for this time of year. Happy Monday and enjoy the beautiful weather♥️

Love everything about your Potting Shed. I, too, love birds and have little bird statues and bird houses throughout my house. They bring me so much joy, especially on the snowy, cold days in IL. I have a dear cousin who has made it his mission to save the Bluebirds in IL. Everyday, he patrols the chain of nesting boxes that he installed, to make sure that the Bluebirds have clean boxes to raise their broods. It is a joyous walk out in the field to hear him speak of “his” Bluebird families and record the number of eggs and hatchlings. Thank you for sharing all, beautiful!

Please send some of those hard working bluebirds to PA Mary! How are they at helping keep the squirrels out of planters??? :@)

I love listening to the birds chirp and will miss them terribly when my work-from-home ends and I return to the office! I love this post because the bird chirpping makes the world seem as though all is well in the world. Finding the best in each day is such a great theme in your posts!

Got the chirping birds but the weather is more in a January/February mode!! All my greenhouse plants are in our workshop..getting hauled in and out daily (weather permitting) for sunshine (if any) and water!!! Hoping they make it!! It hailed here yesterday (Mother’s Day)…GRRRR and it’s still too cold..
Hopefully, by the end of the week, tempts will be more normal!! You have been very lucky with your weather!! 🌨❄️🌬🤞🏻

Love your pictures & all the “birding”. I have the books of “The Edwardian Lady” & read over & over. I don’t have bluebirds but they look so beautiful. Thank you so much!! Your potting shed looks like so much fun. Thought I would get flowers yesterday but too windy & rainy!!! Have to wait a little longer. Have fun!!!

All Things Birds – this post is one of my very favorites you have ever done, Mary. Thanks for all the beautiful quotes and pics and loveliness.

We have bluebirds this year – so far no sign of the kestral that always wants to kill them. Praying they can make the season.

I love bird chirping weather Mary, and I swear the birds seem extra loud and happy this year! I love how you have feathered your potting shed nest, the table is adorable! Something about bird houses always makes me smile :) I am enjoying every minute of this spring weather before it gets too hot!

Great shots of the bluebirds! I love seeing your Potting Shed. The bird decor is so pretty arranged with your birdhouses and books. We’ve got bluebirds nesting here too. I’ve been in yard alot with this warm weather and the birds have been chirping (singing) and making my day great! If the seeds and water gets too low it seems they get closer to me like we need more!!

Be still my heart! ♥️♥️♥️ Love all your bird items! That bird welcome plaque is really special. I have a few pretty bird houses for inside and some various birds on finials too. Am giving it some seious thought about the lovely Robin’s egg blue “Hobbit” birdhouse you shared the other day, it was over -the-top cute. Out in my shed I have abandon nests in all different sizes on display, just can’t let them get destroyed since our little friends worked so hard at building them. Your twig flatware and special bird dishes are the bomb! So perfect. We have a pair of Bluebirds that always go to the large tree across the street. I have a house already for them, but no renters as of yet. I’m still hoping though. Thanks Mary for making all of our hearts a little lighter today as we share the love of birds and their sweet songs.

Love seeing all of your creations! Can’t help but think you have a warehouse someplace to store all of those unique and charming items. Today is good day to next inside in Grants Pass, Oregon! Cooler and drizzling all day. We have feeders out for birds and a couple of families of Canada geese visit daily for a treat of cracked corn. Not too much though as they must continue to forage for their health.

Our weather has been beautiful also! I am happy to say I have bluebirds in my house, too. I found five eggs in the box. I wish I knew when she finished laying so I could count the days before hatching. The incubation is 12-14 days. I seldom can photograph them because I can’t see the house from my porch. You got some great shots.
I just finished a post on birds also. I have added to my bird pics during this time staying home and have loved photographing the birds. It has been a joy to watch them. I can’t get enough.
If the weather could just stay like this! It is perfect.
    Have a lovely week, Mary.

Mary, your birding posts are always among my favorites! Love the quote about chirping weather! My husband and I have enjoyed “chirping weather” In our courtyard, especially mornings and evenings.
Tonight we had hummingbirds, Cardinals, and purple finches plus songs of other birds-no bluebirds, though. Is your nesting box near an open field? I have had COUNTRY DIARY for years, but will look for NATURE NOTES. Your tablescape is beautiful, as always. Thank you!!!

    • May 13, 2020 at 4:01 pm

Thank you Teresa! Yes, it’s next to the field by the corner of my Potting Shed so I can keep an eye on their comings and goings. :)

Thanks for your reply, Mary. I had heard near the edge of a wooded area was a good place for bluebird houses, but that didn’t work for us. We will try again near an open field.:)

  38. May 14, 2020 at 12:17 pm

Mary, there’s so much to love about this post, I don’t know where to begin. I really like the Twig Flatware, the Welcome Bird Plaque, the other smaller plaque . . . I have the “Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady” but I don’t have Nature Notes. I’m off to try to find that one. I didn’t even know of its existence. This is a quieter bird post and it is surprisingly effective what you’ve been able to do with not too much color. It’s beautiful! Thank you for another inspiring post.

  39. May 15, 2020 at 3:16 pm

I’m currently living in South Carolina and have been seeing so many birds recently too! I think there must be a cardinal nest somewhere near the backyard, because I see them flying every morning. Bluebirds are one of my absolute favorites, though. And waking up to the sound of the birds chirping is absolutely one of the things getting me through this time!
