Christmas Around the Potting Shed

Happy Tuesday!

Are you like me and having a hard time believing we’re halfway through December?

There are still so many things on my “to do” list!

Christmas Around the Potting Shed | ©homeiswheretheboatis.net #shed #christmas #greenery

I spent the better part of a week gathering and foraging for greenery

and planting some vintage charm around

the Potting Shed this past week.

Christmas Around the Potting Shed | ©homeiswheretheboatis.net #shed #christmas #greenery

I ran out of time last year to deck her halls and had forgotten

how much greenery, time and energy it takes!

It’s a labor of love I enjoy, with the key word ‘labor’. :)

The window box on the porch was ‘spruced up’ with pine,

juniper, cedar, magnolia and a swag of tartan ribbon.

And a bird house sits among the evergreens in the

window box for some Merry December nesting.

I refreshed a wreath I picked up at Lowe’s a couple of weeks ago,

adding some additional greenery,

along with some tartan ribbon and bow.

Here is the wreath before adding the plate. . .

To hang the plate in the center of the wreath, I used

a woven placemat with a handle, plate hanger

and a drapery pin. . .

The handle of the placemat hangs on the wreath hanger and the pin is pushed

through the woven mat and provides a hook for the plate hanger.

Pine, cedar and berries fill a red ‘Seed Company’ pot. Although hard to see,

there’s a small bird nest I tucked in that I found doing some garden clean up.

“Fresh is the Best” is my motto when you can forage for greenery,

free-for-the-clipping!

The ornaments are sparsely and carefully placed so the slender pine branches

won’t collapse under their weight like Charlie Brown’s tree. :)

There’s freezing rain and ice in the forecast tomorrow,so I plan on removing the ornaments

and will rehang them so branches don’t snap.

Wow, I can imagine the time spent on making each and every one of those arrangements so lush, Mary! I love them all – the window box, the wheelbarrow and the door being my favorites. I wondered how you hung that plate snugly, thanks for explaining. Your Charlie Brown tree (your words, but not how I would describe it!) has so many neat garden themed ornaments. ♥ We’ll see what Mother Nature delivers tomorrow, we’re also under that same watch.

I ALWAYS love your posts but seldom comment…unless there’s a giveaway. Smile. Everything is always so exquisitely decorated…such a joy to visit here. I’ve passed by Lake Norman many times headed to SC. In fact, one of the neighbors in our subdivision moved there a few years ago, and I’ve always passed by feeling a kinship with the area. Love your watering cans too. I collect them down my front steps filled with flowers…but never followed thru using winter greenery! I will have to do that!

  5. December 15, 2020 at 8:22 am

Good morning Mary, Wow, I can’t even imagine the hours it must have taken you to decorate your shed! It is gorgeous!! It is all so beautiful…I have an old wheelbarrow and wish I had thought of the greens…how pretty that would have been. How did you secure them in there? That would have been an issue, esp3cially with our NW winter winds😊 And the ornaments on your tree are just perfect for your tree..Everything is amazing. Thank you for sharing your “unbelievably” beautiful shed!

    Happy Holidays!

First, and most important, THANK YOU for putting this together for all of us to enjoy. When I was younger, I didn’t appreciate all the time and energy it took when I visited someone’s beautifully decorated home. Now that it’s my turn, not only do I appreciate all your hard work but understand the diligence and patience you must put in an area to make is so beautiful. Your arrangements are always lovely and welcoming and we, your viewers, thank you!

Isn’t she LOVELY! What a great job Mary, the shed is so festive with all the greenery and those wonderful red Nandina berries, what a holiday show! Your plaid boots are awesome. I know you put a lot of work into gathering all that greenery. I just filled 2 medium size window boxes and my 2 urns and it took a lot of holly branches, white pine and evergreen with pinecones to fill in, but it was worth the effort and I know you feel the same. Your wreath with the Lenox bird plate in the center is extra special. My shed just has a nice big wreath, I didn’t get out the vintage sled, but now wish I had ( hmmmm, maybe tomorrow…hehe). I love your wheel barrow with all the trimmings, it warmed my heart to read that it was your Dad’s. ♥️♥️ I have my Dad’s also and it is HEAVY and green, but I won’t give it up, I use it all the time. Actually, we have home movies with me around 4 years old, sitting in it amongst pumpkins and my dad carting me around the yard. Maybe that’s where my love for pumpkins started! Yes, Mary I think I will get my vintage sled out tomorrow to dress up the porch and thank you for giving me that extra little push, so no, I guess I’m not done afterall, haha! 😉🌲🌲🌲🌲

I so love all of your pictures and settings but the pottery shed pictures really touch my heart. I have a small collection of old watering cans and love love love your hanging of them on the edge of the shed. I don’t have a shed but will look for someplace to hang some ( several are on the top of my kitchen cabinets and they will stay there but the others..)once the world opens up again I can’t wait to go browsing to find more. Thanks for all your loveliness! Merry Christmas!

Perfection. . . .I tried to consider which of these was my favorite, the wellies, the wreath, the sweet ornaments but it was way too difficult to decide. All the trimmings may be my favorite, love the beaded ornament and the galvanized items. Mrs. Powers welcomes the gardener in me. Thanks for this day brightener, it is a fresh look, not easily copied by others. You are an original.******

Mary, You have outdone yourself this year. It is just great and I agree live greens and berries are best.
Today I am making your Cranberry orange bread in small loaf pans to give as gifts. Definitely the best recipe I have found.
Stay safe tommorow and hope the ice stays away. Good day to stay inside and bake some more Christmas goodies.

Oh Mary… I love your Christmas details at your Potting Shed! I envy your live greenery. Here in the desert I used faux and some rosemary from my garden to decorate my she shed.
The wheel barrow is darling. I almost had a red wagon to use for my shed porch… but it got away from me on MarketPlace.
Sending you lots of Happy Holiday Wishes my friend!

I want to spend Christmas in your Potting Shed, it is so well-dressed and festive, and free greenery is definitely a bonus. Would you please provide a source for the wicker tray with the handle, or a similar one? I’ve made your ‘Hello Autumn’ wreath twice, but find I really need that tray for better support. Merry Christmas!

    • December 16, 2020 at 10:20 am

Thank you Peyton! I found the woven placemats with handle at World Market 5+ years ago but they’re no longer available. I did a quick online search and didn’t see anything similar. If I find something I’ll add a link to the post and send you an email. Merry Christmas ♥

Have always loved your garden shed. Especially at Christmas…. Thanks you for sharing. A “special treat” Chloe

  43. December 16, 2020 at 9:42 pm

Darling, I hear you on labor, after decorating lr, fr, kitchen, dr, deck and barn I thought it would be new years by the time I finished. Did I mention I just skipped a tree completely! With the addition of a greenhouse next year I will have to start in August! Not complaining, its fun pulling out all my goodies after years of living in the beach cottage, I can’t wait to have a garden themed tree next year in the greenhouse, I’m hoping that darling greenhouse ornament you sent me at least ten years ago survived the move! Love all your details, we definitely are garden twins when it comes to the love of decorating!

  44. December 17, 2020 at 11:48 am

My favorite potting shed all decked out for the season! It’s beautiful! I know what you mean on the labor…..I’m still tweaking and adding things to my shed and the house. I love using the fresh greenery outside but it is quite time consuming gathering it all and getting it just right! I love your galvanized bird house on the tree, can you share your source? Thanks! Merry Christmas!

Your decor is just beautiful. Unfortunately this year, I do not have outside access, only via a fire escape ladder to a small rooftop area where I have some planters. Today, we had 12″ of snow, so climbing a fire escape to get to the planters is no longer possible. I do have a small double suet bird feeder that i have decorated with some greens and berries to attract some small birds. At least I can reach that from my living room window. Thank you for all of your decorating ideas and recipes.
