Extend the twinkle season for the winter months with a Winter Nesting Tree, decorated with bird ornaments, glittery nests, snowflakes, icy branches and pine cones.
Happy Monday!
We had our first snowfall of the year, a wintry mix of sleet and snow on Friday.
I was hoping for an accumulation of a few inches of the white stuff (snow, not sleet!) but it changed over to rain. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for more snow, a somewhat rare occurrence, later this winter. Note to Mother Nature: Snow in January or February please, not March or April!
We’re enjoying a little January nesting by our Winter Nesting Tree. It’s a wintry mix of icy branches, snowflakes, birds and glittery nests and pine cones.
Our ‘Winter Nesting Tree’ became a tradition 5 years ago to help banish the winter blues and extend the twinkle season after the Christmas ornaments and decorations were packed away. Nautical Nick cruised back to the attic along with other the red and green, and was replaced with bird ornaments collected over the years that previously spent the winters nesting in the Potting Shed.
The first year I added some pheasant feathers and dried hydrangeas to the tree to fill in among the birds, nests and snowflakes. You can see it here. More birds have flocked to the branches in the following years with the addition of snowy white ribbon and icy branches.
The twinkling lights of the tree help make the transition from Christmas to winter easier and the house a little cozier and brighter. It’s good for my mental health when it’s dark and gray outside, especially now that we’re spending more time at home.
The top of the tree is decorated with icy branches and sparkling snowflakes found at Michaels and Hobby Lobby a few years ago. I cut the branches apart to create more icy layers along the tree. Bird nests with snowy covered eggs were a Hobby Lobby find several years ago.
Bird ornaments collected over the years have flocked to roost on the tree for winter . . .
A Nuthatch. . .
A Titmouse. . .
Woodpeckers. . .
Chickadees. . .
This little Chickadee flew all the way from Philly several years ago, courtesy of my blogging friend Lynn, thank you again Lynn. ♥
Sparkling nests and glittery birds flocked to the tree. . .
Along with a pair of burlap and jute feathered friends.
A bird with sheet music tail feathers. . .a rare variety and sighting ‘-)
Mercury glass with muslin streamer tail feathers. . .
And a bird with twig tail feathers, twig wings and gift from my sister. ♥
Snowy white bands of sparkling ribbon from Hobby Lobby add some dimension and a wintry mix to the tree.
A parliament of owls flocked to the tree . ..
I found most of the owl ornaments at Hobby Lobby over the years. Hobby Lobby’s ornaments are 50% off starting in October.
Whooooo knew there were so many different variety of owls? :)
These DIY Owl Ornaments that were a hoot to make and spent last winter cozied up in my Finger Knitting Winter Wreath.
Do you have a tree you enjoy seasonally besides at Christmas?
Hope you’re staying warm and cozy in your nest. ♥
Thank you for your visit, sharing with:
Mary, Your Winter Nesting Tree is gorgeous! Every year you share it I tell myself that I’m going to do that next year! I need to set a reminder on my calendar to check Hobby Lobby for bird ornaments in October before they’re picked over. Stay cozy and safe!
Jerri
Gorgeous! Definitely a cheerful sight during the winter doldrums.
What a beautiful collection of ornaments and I love how that white sparkling ribbon cascades down your tree. My dear mother would have loved your nesting tree as she loved watching the birds and filling her feeders. I have a tiny tree on my baker’s rack in the kitchen that I keep kitchen ornaments on year round but change out for Valentine’s Day adding hearts and for Easter with decorative eggs. Thank you for sharing the beauty this morning Mary. I hope you get some snow before winter is over.
Wow!, Mary your tree is gorgeous!!! You have the most beautiful things. This year so far seems to be lighter on snow this year —so far. Hopefully you will get your snow❄️ Stay well and warm.
Blessings
Gert
Your tree takes my breath away, thanks for sharing! Note to self: Shop for bird ornaments and nests in October!
Mary, you nesting tree is beautiful and I am sure it’s sparkle helps during these winter days. Parts of AL received snow last night and this morning, but we only have rain. Enjoy your Monday!
I can see how your nesting tree brings cheer and warmth to your home. It is absolutely beautiful. My favorite ornament is your sweet little birdhouse. I have a small collection of bird ornaments that I use on a tree shaped with grapevines. The ornaments change over to hearts for February. Especially in these times I believe it is so important to have something in our home to bring smiles and warmth. We are still hoping for a snowfall here in coastal Virginia!
Beautiful! I am so fascinated with birds and even more now that I am surrounded by trees. We took our trees ( one big and two small- all formally live trees) down this weekend and I will be redecorating them with popcorn, cranberries, oranges and pumpkin- birdseed pine cones for placement throughout our yard. Then I get to enjoy more birds. Thanks for sharing all your amazing decorating skills.
A rare sighting, indeed!! Your tree is so incredibly lovely…the reflections it must make in mirrors, windows, etc. Everything came down…outside…yesterday w/50 degree temps…NOT my indoor w/is now my heart tree…lots of crystals, sparkles & rainbows appearing all times of day & nite. “Socked in” this morning…can hear a lone goose…hubs said, “honking the fog horn”…oh, dear…franki
Thank you Franki, I bet your heart tree with crystals is beautiful! While I prefer those flocks of 20+ geese to keep swimming on by, those lone geese always make me sad as they mate for life.
Beautiful tree. You have the loveliest blog.
Just a beautiful tree!!! Wish I had those gorgeous ornaments!
I was wondering if you got snow Mary! Your winter tree is gorgeous, your birds and owls are so unique and beautiful, and I especially love the curling ribbons cascading down, so pretty! We are only a few degrees away from snow here today, very cold and rainy, I’m so glad I can be cozy at home 🥶
HI Mary, What a wonderful idea. I feel the same way, Colorado doesn’t get snow until January and by then the lights are gone. I do try and keep up a little garland and lights on the fireplace until February, but you tree is beautiful. laura
An. Absolute. Stunner! Mary, adore your collection of birds, every single one. Although, you are in need of a peacock, lol! I have two white ones on my Christmas tree.
Hi Debbee, I had to chuckle at the peacock. ;) Hope you are doing well with your physical therapy and getting around a little better without a cumbersome boot. I know you’re anxious for the delivery of your sweet pup ♥
I love this! It inspired me to create my own version! Second year one of my Xmas trees transitioned to a winter tree. Probably the only snow I’ll see in coastal Virginia 😣
Hi Sandra! It’s wonderful to extend the twinkle season into January and February isn’t it? Was that your beautiful tree I saw Susan feature at BNOTP? I’m keeping my fingers crossed for snow ♥
Mary, Your nesting tree is beautiful! It’s always a favorite. Love all the gorgeous birds and snowflakes. It’s magical indeed! We’re getting flurries currently but it will end by mid-day. We would love a nice snowfall to enjoy. Enjoy your week sweet friend. Clara ❤️
Thank you so much Clara! I wish we were getting snow instead a rain again today. Stay warm and safe. ♥
Just love your Idea, Marvelous Photos as usual
Thank you Barbara! I so appreciate your visits and comments. ♥
Mary ~ Tweet Tweet Tweet ! Your bird and wildlife winter tree is soooo sweet !! Hugs, Dorinda
Thank you Dorinda! Happy New Year to you ♥
So beautiful! You take off your Christmas ornaments & put the lovely birds , so Is that a real tree? Ours was already too dry here in Florida to do anything but throw it out !
Thank you Mary. No it’s artificial so no fire hazard to keep it up through February 🎄❄️
Such a lovely tree filled with sweet birds. Love the idea of a nesting tree. No snow here in sunny California.
Mary, your Winter Nesting Tree is so beautiful. I wish I had the ornaments to make over my tree like yours. This year Hobby Lobby and Michaels were out of just about everything Christmas by the time I went to the store in December. I’ll try again this year and hopefully I’ll be able to find some new winter ornaments. Having a few lights in the house makes the dreary January days a bit brighter!
Thank you Susan! Yes, Everyone decorated early for Christmas this year as we were spending more time at home. Lots of Christmas merchandise was sold out by mid November this past year as I learned the hard way. ♥
Beautiful, Mary. Your tree is so elegant and the bird ornaments are stunning. Gorgeous.
Thank you so much Marsha! Looking forward to having a virtual seat at your tables this year. ♥
THANK YOU FOR THE JOY AND INSPRATION YOU BRING EACH DAY….These are such trying and lonely times…and you my dear continue to bring happiness to so many. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU…The tree is unbelievably beautiful!
Thank you for your visits and kind comment Mary Anne {blush}. Wishing a Happy and Healthy New Year! Stay safe. ♥
Mary, your bird tree is just wonderful! Your photography is just lovely, as always! I have a slim short tree that I only fill with birds and a few small silver drum ornaments that were my mother’s and she passed away 25 years ago, so nice and vintage. I never left it up, but thought about it. I think I will plan ahead and leave it up next year, thanks to your wonderful inspiration!
I’m from a Chicago suburb so you can have ‘my’ snow any time!
Such a beautiful collection of birds for your nesting tree! It looks so warm and cozy! The sunshine here in Ca. helps to keep my spirits up during this pandemic.
Mary, your nesting tree is stunning and your photography is always exquisite. I am curious to know how you achieve the focused subject but unfocused background. The lights are mere lit and softened balls…
Thank so much for your visits and sweet comment! It’s known as ‘bokeh’ and has to do with your camera lens and settings. There’s a good article on how to create it here: https://www.nikonusa.com/en/learn-and-explore/a/tips-and-techniques/bokeh-for-beginners.html
I have to laugh Mary, even my son was saying yesterday that he wishes folks would leave their outdoor Christmas lights up through March to cheer up the gray winter! I love your winter tree, I set a real little one up myself this year, the colorful birds make me smile… Glad to hear you’re still enjoying the ornament, thanks for the shout-out:@)
I LOVE your winter tree tradition and think it’s really smart. I left our tree up (unadorned) after all the decorations were put away for the first time this year. Just having that extra light in the mornings and evenings, as well as particularly gray days (like most of January, my least favorite month), makes a huge difference. Kudos to you for decorating yours again, this time with a total winter theme. It’s so beautiful! We didn’t get the snow this past weekend, only gray skies……really craving some sunshine that seems so elusive…….
So very pretty, Mary. I will be scrolling through this one again and again. Looking at your beautiful creations brings peace to my day. Thank you for sharing your work.
Thank you for you visits and comments Nancy! ♥
How lovely! Your bird ornaments are so varied and have such character, perching around your icy branches. I miss my Christmas tree. This is such a fabulous idea post holiday.
Mary, I always admire your winter nesting tree. I love the twinkle lights and winter touches. It’s a treat to see your flock of owls. I’ve collected owl ornaments through the years as well, but I don’t see any duplications with yours. Isn’t that amazing! All my Christmas is packed away, but the snow people are out to take me through the month. I’m one who loves winter!
We got a wintry mix as well. Snow in Texas is rare, but it started snowing yesterday morning around 10 am and snow fell gently till late in the day. It was beautiful to watch while snuggled in by a cozy fire.
How wonderful you got snow Sarah! I’m a winter lover too and enjoy an excuse to curl up by the fire with a book and a dog in my lap. :) ♥
Mary, I just love how you extend the life of your tree by celebrating winter in such a magical way, makes me wish for snow instead of the three inches of rain which left a pond in the back garden. Please tell me where you found the curly-q ornament hangers I noticed on your tree, I would love to use them next Christmas. Thanks again for sharing your creativity.
Thank you Virginia. I’m wishing for snow instead of the rain we had today too. I ordered the hooks from Amazon, they’re available in both silver and gold: https://amzn.to/2MNda5u
Thank so much Mary I am going to order them. You are a genius.
Very tweet tree 😉 love seeing your snow, I wish we could just get some decent rain, snow would be oh so delightful!
Your tree is lovely! I have lots of bird ornaments for our Christmas tree but you have me beat. One of your owl ornaments looks just like Rockefeller – remember him? This post certainly brightens what was a very dreary weather day in Georgia!!
So very pretty Mary. Your icy branches look just like a Michigan winter.8 Love that special curly -frosty white ribbon, it adds the finishing touch! Will have to look for it next year. Yes, I have a seasonal bird tree and it is decorated with white lights, birds, snowflakes and icicles. It helps so much with long winter and gray days. About 8 years ago I decided to leave the tree up and redo it for winter and I’m so glad I did. Then when late March came around it had brought so much joy, I decided to leave it up all year, removing the snowflakes and icicles and lightly decorating it for each season, but always keeping the birds as my main theme. Spring has garden ornaments and nests, Summer, American flags and Fall, leaves and pheasant feathers. It’s the simple things in life that bring pleasure and this is surely one of them.
I love the idea of a nesting tree! Enjoy!
I always love seeing your twinkling winter nesting tree, Mary. I still have my bedroom tree up which is deco with snowmen, but I’ll change out to hearts soon. Twinkling lights always brighten my spirits.
I love your nesting tree. It makes me smile during this dreary January weather. I especially love the birds and snowy ribbon!!! Thanks for sharing! So happy to see you got snow. I am your neighbor further east in NC and all we got was rain.
Your nesting tree is so incredibly beautiful!
About 5 years ago, I bought a 7’ birch tree with lighted tips. It looks quite real. I bought this to use as a Christmas tree. I personally don’t care for big green trees, as I have a smallish house. Plus I don’t cate for traditional Christmas colours. At Christmas I decorate it with the birds I have been collecting for years. I limit the palette to white, silver and some mini blue glass pine cones. I put a few small glass balls in the same colours. It’s so pretty. One year after the holiday, ( I leave the ornaments up until January 6th). Well, the tree was so pretty on its own with the lighted branch tips, I left it up all year. LOL
But, sometimes I do leave it in its “wintery” state with the birds. It makes me happy too!
