Happy Saturday!
Here’s a weekend waterview from Lake Norman. . .
It’s the Dog Days of Summer!
While we refer to the ‘dog days’ of summer as the hottest,
most uncomfortable part of summer,
the ‘dog days’ have their roots in astronomy.
The dog days are the period following the heliacal rising of the star system Sirius,
the Dog Star, typically between July 3rd and August 11th.
Sirius is part of the constellation Canis Majoris—the “Greater Dog”—which is where Sirius
gets its canine nickname, as well as its official name, Alpha Canis Majoris.
The name “Sirius” even stems from Ancient Greek seírios, meaning “scorching.”
Greek and Roman astrology associated the Dog Days with heat, drought,
sudden thunderstorms, lethargy, fever, mad dogs, and bad luck.
Check all those that apply:
☑ Heat
☑ Sudden Thunderstorms
☑ Lethargy
☑ Fever (fall fever🍁)
☑ Bad luck
No mad dogs here, only lethargic ones. . .🐾🐾
We’re all feeling a little lethargic in the August heat and humidity!
We had some bad luck discovering that our irrigation pump had expired, but good
luck in finding one in stock locally, that my handyman-hubby could replace.
We enjoyed some early morning boating this week. . .
Checking out the Osprey that will begin their migration in September,
heading south to Central and South America for winter.
We spied this cute gazebo on the water. . .
I love the whale weathervane even though
it looks like it belongs on Cape Cod. :)
And this helicopter is not a typical sight!
It certainly makes for easier travelling into Charlotte to avoid I-77. :)
Lola and Sophie say they hope you’re surviving the dog days
of summer and finding a way to beat the heat!
🐾🐾 ❤️ 🇺🇸 💙
The cutest dogs I’ve ever seen! Thank you for taking me on a cruise.
Lola and Sophie are making the best of these dog days of summer. They are fortunate to have a good “mama and papa.”
I so adore the pictures of your puppies! They are to cute for words. It has been unbearably hot here in Virginia and what a storm we had yesterday. If I think it’s hot; you know it’s hot! Stay cool! Peace.
Your photos make the dog days look gorgeous!! I, too, thank you for taking us on a simply beautiful cruise with your adorable doggies.
Beautiful photos of the girls! Lola and Sophie sure do enjoy their boat rides… as much as we enjoy coming along. Thank you for taking us.
And that helicopter is something else… that’s called spot on landing!
Have a beautiful weekend!
Loved the boat ride Mary. The girls look like they’re having fun. Glad your hubby was able to find the part you needed and get repairs done. You don’t expect a helicopter on the dock but it works! Fun ride! Clara❤️
Looks like a lovely weekend! Enjoy!
Great post! We’ve been in dog days ALL summer! Wish I could check off Thunderstorm, but no rain in sight this summer. I definitely have fall fever! Sophie and Lola look perfectly content. Sadie sleeps most of the day near the AC vent, but then when she goes out, she likes to lay in the sun. Go figure!
Love seeing your sweet pups Mary! Thanks for the boat ride! ⚓️🐾🐾
Love! 🐾🐾
Thank you for sharing your boat ride, gorgeous lake views and sweet dogs Mary! Happy Weekend! Jerrie
I always love when you share your weekend waterviews! Happy weekend!
I alwys enjoy a boat ride with you and your dogs! The helicopter is certainly a surprise on the dock, maybe they need a possible fast getaway to a hospital or a VIP guest is visiting! We never see osprey nests here so we so enjoy your pictures of the soaring birds…they look so free. Seeing the water near the boat is soothing, and one can imagine a cool breeze just by looking at your water views. Love all the information you share as well!
Such sweet pups and gorgeous blue water views! Your osprey shots are amazing too!
Happy Sunday Mary! I always enjoy a boat ride in your pontoon, especially if the girls are on board! It’s been oppressively hot and humid here and I have fall fever too!
I just read about the origin of the term “dog days of summer” a week or so ago, amazing! Our “dog days” this summer have been full of pop up thunder storms which cool things off briefly, then turns the atmosphere into a steam bath! Your sweet pooches do look a little miserable~ Let’s hope things begin to cool off soon 😅
Lola and Sophie make the dog days look good! Thanks for sharing, fall can’t get here quick enough for me either! 🍁🍂🏈🎃
Beautiful doggies and scenery! Thanks!
As hot and humid as the dog days of summer have been I must say I love to watch the thunderheads build in the late afternoon and hear the rain as it moves in generally from the west. Then time to go back in the house for a storm nap. When I wake up the storm has passed and I check the rain gauge, take a garden tour to see how the plants faired. Usually they all seem refreshed from the showers. Me too till the humidity and temperatures rise..
Great pictures of your local Ospreys. We enjoy watching ours on their fishing forays to the pond across the street. Will miss them when they leave for the winter.
Your pups have the good life. Thanks for sharing.
Love your weekend waterview posts! Your sweet dogs make my day. Happy Sunday Mary!
These posts featuring your beautiful fur babies are my favorite!
Great post, love learning tidbits and seeing happy dogs! How incredible your irrigation is straight from the lake, no wonder your garden isn’t crunchy like mine!
Some of the cutest pictures yet of the girls! I love the shot with their heads together having a little “sister chat”. They’re so beautiful. I often show pictures of the girls from your Weekend Waterview posts to my husband saying, “This is what we need for our boat”!
And kudos to your husband for replacing the pump. A handy husband is helpful to have!!
Meanwhile, here in Michigan we are making our way out of a few steamy days of high humidity. It’s not my favorite, but I save all my complaining about the weather for the long winter. ;)
Thank you for a lovely post!
Aww, always love seeing the pups, especially the picture looking over the side as if she’s thinking about jumping in and the one taking shelter under the seat is extra cute! We too have had some hot, sticky 95 -97 degree days. I haven’t made it to the beach yet, but did find it very relaxing in my friends pool, lol. Can’t believe we are moving through August so fast, yikes! Glad you were able to replace your irrigation pump! Thanks for the great water pictures, always love them! “Hot fun in the summertime”. 🎶
This article is a great way to learn about the “Dog Days of Summer” while enjoying some beautiful pictures of Lake Norman. It’s a great read!
