Happy Monday!

It’s one of my favorite days of the month, when I join my blogging friends

for some flower therapy and Monday Morning Blooms!

You can find my blogging friends’ links to their floral inspiration at the bottom of this post.

With Spring around the corner, ‘Green’ was our common theme

for this month’s edition of Monday Morning Blooms.

And with St. Patrick’s Day less than two weeks away,

my thoughts have turned to green and shamrocks!

To create my flower arrangement, I started with a favorite tool, chicken wire,

to support the flower stems for easy arranging.

Chicken wire is an eco-friendly, aka, “green” :) alternative to wet flower foam as it is reusable.

Cut your chicken wire at least 4 inches wider than the opening of your container,

so you have some excess wire to bend and hold against the walls of your container.

I like to use a coated / painted chicken wire which is rust-resistant after repeated uses.

I purchased a white painted chicken wire several years ago which has since tripled in price,

but this green coated wire is available and would blend with floral stems.

If needed, you can use waterproof floral tape across the opening of your container

to keep the chicken wire from lifting as your arrange your stems.

Tip: Use a Lazy Susan Turntable for flower arranging and

easy viewing of all sides of your arrangement while working!

I used an assortment of grocery store blooms for my arrangement. . .

alstroemeria, mums, (both white and green, big and small),

green carnations and white hydrangeas.

Here are few tips to help extend the life of your flowers in your arrangement:

Cut your flower stems at a 45 degree angle for maximum water uptake and

remove any leaves below the water line.

Always add floral preservative packets to your vase water.

If you don’t have any floral preservative, you can make your own with this easy formula.

Check your water level to top it off as needed and change your water

every other day if possible, to reduce bacteria and extend the vase life.

To get the most bang for your buck and life from your flowers, use an

an anti-transpirant spray like Crowning Glory that seals in moisture!

It dries clear and is safe to use on all flower types, especially beneficial

for flowers that are prone to wilting due to moisture loss, like hydrangeas.

DIY shamrock napkin rings with wax seal stamps for St. Patrick's Day table #stpatricksday #tablescape #upcycle #diy #shamrock #napkinrings ©homeiswheretheboatis.net

I made Shamrock Napkin Rings to coordinate with my napkins and placemats

for the table using upcycled cardboard rolls, ribbon and a wax seal stamp.

DIY shamrock napkin rings with wax seal stamps, cardboard tubes and ribbon for St. Patrick's Day table #stpatricksday #tablescape #upcycle #diy #shamrock #napkinrings ©homeiswheretheboatis.net

To make these napkin rings, save your empty cardboard tubes from your paper towels,

wrapping paper or tiolet paper. You’ll also need an an x-acto or utility knife,

pencil, ruler, scissors and hot glue gun.

Cut your tube to the width of your ribbon and adhere the ribbon to the cardboard tube

using a hot glue gun. To keep the cut edge of your ribbon from fraying,

cut an extra half inch or so in length of your ribbon to fold over and glue to seal the raw edge.

Sealing Wax Sticks are available in a variety of colors and fit in a mini glue gun.

A glue gun is so much easier to use than the traditional method of melting a sealing

wax stick over a flame or pre-melting the wax and applying with a spoon!

It takes a bit of wax to change colors in your glue gun with this method of creating wax seals,

but you can have fun creating a marble effect when you introduce a new color

in your gun as it mixes with the color that’s already melted in the chamber of your glue gun.

My preferred method to make wax seals is with a  silicone hot glue gun mat,

rather than making them directly on my envelope or ribbon.

The advantage of using a hot glue mat is that your seals can be removed when cool,

so you can choose the seals with the best impressions, rather than take a chance on ruining

your envelope (or ribbon) with an less than desirable seal.

When the seals are cool, you peel them off your mat and they can be applied to your envelopes,

invitations or ribbon using a glue dot  or with a small amount of sealing wax or a low melt glue gun.

How to use wax seal stamps to make napkin rings

For best wax seal impressions, place your stamp on ice or on a freezer pack,

so it will release easily from the wax. You don’t want any condensation on your stamp,

so wipe it with a paper towel after chilling or place your ice in a plastic bag to keep it dry.

It takes a few test pulls from your glue gun and a little experimenting to

get a feel for the flow of wax and how much you need for your seal.

I find that waiting for about 5 – 10 seconds before pressing your seal

into the hot wax creates a better impression.

Press down gently with your chilled stamp and press in the wax 3 – 5 seconds;

pressing down gently again as you lift the stamp to release it.

I typically get two impressions before placing the seal back on ice to chill it down again before reusing.

You sure do have a gift when arranging florals, Mary. That looks so pretty, as does your table setting. I often hesitate buying flowers, simply because of the prep work it takes to ensure they last beyond a day or so (and I usually have all the groceries to put away too). But, I do love having arrangements through the house. And you make arranging flowers seem so easy! Happy Monday morning blooms!

The wax seals perfectly coordinate with the napkins! I love the colors. Are the home goods napkins and placemats paper or fabric? Recent find?

Mary, your shamrock napkins and placemats look so nice with your Bordello Pinheiro pieces. You find so many darling shamrock plates and Irish sentiment plates that coordinate so well with your tablescape. I am constantly impressed with your DIY napkin rings. Love the cute shamrock biscuit in the mini cabbage bowl too.
Your flower arrangement is so pretty and brings all your elements together for your “green theme”. Your tips on using chicken wire, flower preservative, and Crowning Glory work very well. Crowning Glory really works!
It is greening up here. Trees are leafing out earlier than normal it seems.
