2015 marks the 150th anniversary of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland!
Written by Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under the pen name, Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland was inspired by a boat trip down the River Thames in Oxford with family friends. As they rowed along, Dodgson, who was a natural storyteller and regularly entertained his friends, told the Liddell children a story about a bored little girl named Alice, who goes looking for an adventure. The family loved it and at the end of that day, the daughter, Alice Liddell, asked for the story to be written down. Charles Dodgson agreed and began writing the manuscript the next day. It eventually took him two and a half years to complete and was published in the summer of 1865. The book, and its sequel Through The Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There, have been translated into at least 65 languages and film and theater adaptations.
Gosh but you are such an ‘alive’ person, how lovely to be able to scroll through your photos and thoughts, a real treat for this weekend morning. Kind regards, Agnes
What a lovely party and thank you for the refresher history lesson. I love reading and learning about the behind the scenes information. Love your Chesire yawning cat and your Queen of Hearts. Added to my treasure hunting lists.
Hi Mary, I had forgotten all about Virginia Slims! We’ve come a long way baby, haven’t we? I loved the link to the dress color description! Alice will always wear blue in my mind but I’m sure she would appreciate a few changes to her wardrobe too. What a fun tea party. I would love to join all the “mad” characters and fear that I would fit right in! Linda
Lovely party, Mary. Such a special celebration as this year is the 150th anniversary of Alice in Wonderland! J’adore the variety of teacups! Lovely post as usual!!!
I loved your fanciful rendition of Alice’s tea party, Mary. The collection of mismatched teacups was fun to see, and I loved your hubby’s grandma’s vintage hats and pins. It would be a pleasure to be a guest at your Mad Hatter Tea Party.
What a wonderful tes party. I have a collection of tea cups and saucers that are still packed! I never drink tea and they always just sat in my hutch before. I should give them away. Wonderful details as always!!! Happy weekend!!!
I’m mad for your party details! Your tablescape captures all the fun of Wonderland, Mary. I love seeing this long table set with beautiful china, the vintage hats, and all the loveliness of a Victorian tea party. I smiled at your comment to me that the Cheshire Cat was your favorite. I read that it was Alice Liddell’s favorite character too. Yes, we are all mad, aren’t we? ;-)
Thanks for making my Saturday morning delightful! I’m off to see more of Wonderland.
Wonderful! Where did you get your marzipan fruits? I had some at the Jane Austen Festival Regency Ball a couple years ago in Bath and wanted to let my daughter give them a try. :) Thanks for sharing your fun party with us!
The only thing I can say that hasn’t been said above (at least if it was said, I missed it) is Enchanting….

I cannot believe it has been 150 years since that book came out…and the table is amazing…filled with such beauty and whimsy…and I am totally admiring your hubby’s grandmother’s hats…how so wonderful that you have them. There is a surprise element in every inch of that table…How wonderful that you were able to use your family’s heirlooms to set a most remarkable table. My smile is bigger than the Cheshire Cat’s!!
I love tea parties, and theme tea parties in particular. Some friends and I have decided to reread The Secret Garden and then have our own themed party. As added fun, we learned that there is also a Secret Garden Cookbook, so I cannot wait to get my hands on that. I love your posting here, as usual, always inspiring.
So enjoyed this party. My mouth is watering for your lovely treats. The berries look so scrumptious! You must have had lots of fun trying to decide what to include and how to arrange it. Your table is lovely.
