I love brown transferware anytime of year but fall is when it really shines. I pulled my small collection together to give them their due for a little touch of fall on a window shelf in the Potting Shed, along with some hydrangeas, mini pumpkins and fall grasses.
My brown transferware pieces were picked up at antique malls or consignment stores over the years.
A favorite Williamsburg Aviary by Wedgwood cup and saucer is nesting with hydrangeas on a Johnson Brothers Windsor Ware Dover teapot.
Limelight hydrangeas have made their fall metamorphosis, changing from white to green with burnished edges of brown. I filled some Ball jars with the greenish/brown blooms to pair with the brown transferware. Their joining mini pumpkins~ white and tiger-striped, fall grasses and a few acorns.
I found a brown transferware tureen lid at a consignment store about 15 years ago.
Since it was orphaned and missing its bowl, I adopted it to give it a home. ;)
I loved its pretty daffodils and basket pattern. You can see it hanging on the Potting Shed door, framed by a wreath for fall, here.
I filled a transferware pitcher with hydrangea blooms and plumes of Maiden grass.
The feathery plumes add some fall color and soft texture.
I harvested some fall grass from the field next to my Potting Shed.
Bundling the grass plumes with twine for some soft texture to enjoy before the field is mowed and baled.
We’ve had some beautiful crisp and cool weather this week, perfect for a little fall nesting!
Hope you’re enjoying some beautiful fall weather where you are!
I love brown transferware! Like you, I especially love how it looks in fall. I’ve created a tablescape, including a platter daffodils, one of my favorite pieces. I don’t care what the patterns or pedigrees are, perfect or chipped, I love the total mish-mash. That bowl with the scalloped edge is unusual, and the wash pitcher and platter both look to be in excellent condition. Your potting shed is one of my favorite places to visit! Have a great weekend.
I too love my Brown Transferware…like you and the other ladies, I particularly love it in the Fall..mine is not a floral pattern. It’s called Americana..with pictures of the Capitol building, etc….I would love the Johnson Transferware but it’s pricey…anyway, love you tablescape and all your beautiful pieces…beautiful weather here this week and weekend..Indian summer is on the way!! 🌾🍁🍂🌻
Mary, you have some of the prettiest brown transferware I’ve ever seen…and I am NOT a “brown” person…in anything…clothes, dishes, just not a favorite color! I only have one piece that I inherited & I never use it.
You’ve displayed yours beautifully & it is always a pleasure to see more of your creativity!
Mary, Today is a glorious fall day here–the first one and the crispy air and autumn light is getting me excited to go out and putter with my camera and the leaves and acorns. Your beautiful vignette is perfect for the way I’m feeling! I love the pale green of the hydrangea and the creamy color of the pumpkins with the dainty brown transferware patterns. Thank you for this beauty! Linda
It is a beautiful Fall day here today, 47 right now but going up to around 70. Next week we get 2 days of 80!!! Crazy. Your potting shed vignettes are always fabulous and this is no exception. LOVE the brown transferware. I don’t have any, sadly:( Have a beautiful day!
Mary, I love the brown transferware! Your autumn vignette is stunning! Our days have gotten too warm again, but the early morning is cool and crisp! Have a wonderful weekend, Pam @ Everyday Living
Stop! Stop! I can’t stand all the “pretty”! :) I love when you share your collection of brown transferware. One of my favorites: the Ball jar with the little pumpkin hidden in the hydrangeas… Happy Fall!
The brown transferware is perfect with your beautiful display of Fall elements. The Maiden grass is a wonderful addition to the hydrangeas in that divine pitcher. Love the tiger striped pumpkins too. How can one not love Autumn? Thank-you for this lovely post- your photos always tell a story all by themselves.
It’s been the last few years that I’ve become smitten with brown transferware, Mary. It’s funny how our tastes change through the years. Your collection is just beautiful and I love how you adopted the tureen lid, and it look so happy on the shelf. How lovely your collection looks along with your limelight hydrangeas, for such a pretty Fall display in my favorite potting shed. Happy weekend!
I love transferware!!! My brown set is Brown Tonquin by Royal Staffordshire. I collect dishes and this was my first transferware set. About eight years ago I found a box in an antique store – almost a complete table setting for eight for about $70 – EUREKA!!!!!! A couple of years ago, I found a few pieces of the Johnson Brothers pattern (like your sugar bowl) at Sleepy Poet in Charlotte. What a beautiful pattern – almost reminds me of watercolors. Your ideas and décor are just beautiful. I am going to have to go out this weekend to an open field and get some grass plumes – never thought of this. They look fantastic!!! Thank you for what you do. You are such an inspiration. Blessings.
This post makes my heart go pitty-pat! I love brown transfer china & hydrangeas….and here they are together. Saving to my Pinterest & Tumblr boards/blog. Thank you so much!
I spotted a small box of brown transferware at an estate sale recently. I thought of you and was glad that I had learned about transferware from your blog. Alas I did not purchase them regretfully. I hope they went to a good home.
OH, SIGH! I just love any transferware in any color. And you are right, I dragged something out I’m going to share next week. Wink, you will love them…grins. Thanks for the beautiful inspiration. (Ps, I didn’t get one bloom on my hydrangeas this year, darn. Love them more than anything, except Iris…lol. Sandi
Very pretty Autumn art show Mary. You know my favorite is always the display of any thing you do to “our” potting shed! lol Love, love LOVE all the pumpkins! Grasses and hydrangeas are pretty too. How thoughtful to add the dishes,-our next favorite love! What a show! Thanks!

Such lovely glimpses of beautiful brown transferware displayed in your potting shed! I can’t wait to get to work on my backyard and get some hydrangeas planted so I have the beautiful dried blossoms in Fall.
Brown transferware is one of my very favorites. I hate a sweet neighbor who has a collection of brown transferware plates, and she has all of them hanging on the wall of her chocolate brown foyer over a large robin egg blue chest. It’s one of the prettiest displays ever. Her foyer reminds me of how you’ve mixed the transferware with the turquoise. So pretty, Mary!
