Weekend Waterview: Are You My Mother?

Happy Weekend! We had an interesting bird experience recently.

My husband came inside one evening and said, “you’ve got to come see this, this bird is stalking me. . .”

This fledgling was hopping around my hubby and chirping loudly as a baby bird would do in the nest, begging for food from his mother.

We immediately thought that it must be hungry.

Living on the lake, we have several “blooms” of mayflies in the summer.

If you aren’t familiar with mayflies, they hatch from fresh water (but never in May ;) and are messy but harmless, clinging to trees, the siding of the house, dock ropes, boat, etc. The live only a few hours to a few days. . .long enough to mate and become part of the food chain.

My hubby found mayflies clinging to the dock which the bird happily gobbled up. . .

He would fly up and perch on top of my hubby’s shoulder. . .

The bird following my hubby around reminded me of the children’s book, “Are You My Mother?”  by P.D. Eastman, edited by Dr. Suess.

Do you remember that book about a baby bird in search of his mother?

After a little online searching we identified it as a Brown-headed Cowbird. Juvenile cowbirds look similar to adult female cowbirds, but are more heavily streaked with lighter bellies and light edging on their wing feathers.

According to AllAboutBirds:

The Brown-headed Cowbird is North America’s most common “brood parasite.” A female cowbird makes no nest of her own, but instead lays her eggs in the nests of other bird species, who then raise the young cowbirds. Cowbird eggs hatch faster than other species eggs, giving cowbird nestlings a head start in getting food from the parents. Young cowbirds also develop at a faster pace than their nest mates.

No wonder this juvenile cowbird doesn’t know who his mother is. . . ;)

We saw him one evening and then again the following morning. He flew over to light on my camera and say goodbye before flying the coop!

Lola and Sophie are stopping by to say “Happy Weekend”.🐾🐾

Thank you for all your welcome wishes and sweet messages for Sophie on Friday.

There were several requests to see them together, so I’m obliging. . . more to come. ;)

Lola says this chair isn’t big enough for the both of them. . .

Sophie says posing for photos is tiring work.

Happy Sunday ♥

Thank you for your visit. 🐾🐾

How funny! I LOVED “Are You My Mother?” and read it countless times to my children, changing the voices for each different animal. Now I have the pleasure to reading it to my grandchildren.

Good Morning Mary! That is such a cute story of the bird. Again great pics of the little guy. Busy household you have with all the new little ones…Sophie and the bird. lol Sophie is adorable. My heart melted, as did my daughter, Chris’s. We recently lost my little “Hickory” one month ago. (Yorkie) He was my baby. My constant, everywhere I went. I miss him every day. Two years ago, we lost his brother. So seeing your pics was a precious moment for both of us. Happy Sunday, enjoy these beautiful days!!

Love this experience you had! We had a similar experience with a hummingbird that I found on the ground while weeding. It couldn’t fly away so my hubby picked it up and brought it inside. He fed it some sugar water which the hummingbird drank right off of his fingers. When it got its strength back it flew around the kitchen. Of course I took a lot of photos and videos. We brought it outside and let it go. It flew into a branch and looked at us as if to say thank you. Nature is so incredible. “A bird in the hand!”

My husband had a orphaned duckling adopt him many years ago & it’s an interesting experience to interact with such a tiny creature. We know Lola is really enjoying Sophie since she is the big sister. I had read earlier this summer about cowbirds using another nest so another mother would be there to watch over her egg/eggs. So many funny things in regards to nature and your husband’s brief encounter with being a “mother.”
Lola and Sophia look so cute together.

  42. August 11, 2019 at 12:36 pm

It’s a beautiful life up there: the green woods, the lake, the birds (this one is such friendly one), the flowers, the two cute furry friends, the blue sky… All is like a a dream in reality! Thank you for sharing all these with us! A very nice Sunday to all of you!

You have definitely brought many smiles to many faces today! It appears that “Mr. Home Is Where the Heart Is” has bird mothering skills that were recognized by this cute juvenile Cowbird. May I also say that both are quite photogenic, though no more so than the sweet Lola and Sophie too! I love the photo of the camera with the wee visitor perched atop being photographed. You may have given this information previously, but what camera and lens are pictured? I am in the market for an upgrade! Thank-you!

  47. August 11, 2019 at 1:34 pm

Oh, my—I thought this was going to be about your new puppy—but to have a bird–insist on attention, that is really rare. Sweet photos and solutions—and with a full tummy, he probably can make his way in the world. Such great photos! And, the patience of your hubby, amazing!

Fascinating! I’d read about cowbirds but had never seen one. What strange behavior! When I first read the title of your post, I thought it was about Sophie looking to Lola as if she was her mother. I was familiar with the book, and Mr.P. & I would joke that our poodle used to go up to neighbors’ porches as we walked our street, as if to say, “are you my mother?”.

I love the little bird following your husband and yes, the book is exactly what it is like! That book was a favorite of mine when I was little (I’m 54) and I read it to my kids. I remember my older son particularly liked the part with the digger. He was obsessed with heavy equipment.

Oh my goodness, that is just unreal about the Cowbird. I am stunned. What an experience – and the bird perched on your camera is an afford-winning photo! You should blow it up and have it as art in your home office wall.

I think your handsome hubby made a very good mother. : – )

Oh my goodness, Mary, what incredible pictures you took of your hubby and the little bird, and what a story! Yes, I know that story well of , Are You My Mother? You’ll have to update us on the little bird. Your two pups are so adorable! I hope Lola is accepting Sophie, but it’s probably an adjustment.

What an interesting experience. Do birds imprint on humans like some other animals do? If so, this little guy might return to visit. Your girls are adorable! Please keep sharing photos. I can’t get enough of these cuties.

I remember that book very well. I would read it to my children often.

  62. August 15, 2019 at 9:31 am

Wow!!! How amazing and heartwarming! I know this sounds nuts, but my father said, if he was granted the choice of being an animal, he would be a bird and he would come back and be with us in our time of need. I have certainly experienced “that bird”…. Thank you for sharing this heartwarming and informative post…and the girls are so adorable!!! Glad Lola is having fun with her baby sister!!! I am sure she will teach her the ropes about posing for the camera!!

  63. August 15, 2019 at 5:17 pm

I loved that book when my kids were little! Those were great pictures of your husband with the bird. Love your new puppy and Lola of course!
