I’ve been taking some time to relax this month and enjoy the twinkle of our Winter Nesting Tree.
January has been a very rainy and dreary month so far. . .
a good time for an indoor craft project!
I’ve wanted to try my hand at finger knitting (pun intended ;)
as it only requires your hands, yarn and it goes pretty quickly.
This simple wreath was an easy project for a novice finger knitter that I could do while
watching TV before graduating to larger projects like scarves and blankets.
You can use the four finger method or two finger method of finger knitting.
I used the two finger method for my wreath. With two finger knitting,
you essentially weave your working yarn around your index and middle fingers
until you have two loops on each finger, then pull the bottom loop of yarn
over the top loop, then repeat to knit your chain.
I learned by watching the video above which is much easier to follow rather
than trying to decipher diagrams and written directions
which can seem more complicated than it really is.

I’ve never knit or crocheted before but after looking at the beautiful variety of yarn available,
I decided I could easily be a yarn hoarder!
Michaels had a beautiful selection of yarn but they were all out of white or ivory that I was looking for.
I found my ivory chenille yarn at Walmart. I loved the chunky size and texture,
but I’m partial to white fluffy things. 🐾🐾
There’s a bit of a learning curve using a chunky yarn to finger knit,
as you have to keep adjusting the loops of the yarn so there is enough slack
to allow you to pull the loops up over your fingers.
If you need to stop or take a break, you can use a pencil (or I used a wooden spoon)
to hold your place until you pick it backup again.
For my winter wreath, I used a 16″ foam wreath from the craft store.
I wrapped my knitted chain around the form, attaching it to the foam wreath with pins.
It took one 31.7 yard skein and about 1/4 of a second skein to cover the form.
Here’s what the wreath looks finished and hanging in its simple winter white glory.
I used a magnetic wreath hanger to attach it on the metal frame of the mirror.

decided the wreath would be a cozy spot to nest for winter.

What a beautiful wreath to match Sophie and Lola! Love the chunky thickness of it, so pretty. I have not heard of finger knitting, how quick and fun. The long tube it creates reminds me of a craft we did as children which used an old empty spool that had four small nails tacked in it around the opening and basically you moved the yarn or string up and over the nails like you are doing with your fingers and the yarn/ string would go down through the hole of the spool. It was fun to do also. Yes, I can crochet and knit, but seem to do more crocheting. I like doing projects that move quickly with visible results and working with yarn meets both of those desires and the bonus is the warmth you get as your project grows. Can’t wait to see what else you create.
Cyndi, you brought back a memory for me. I remember using the spools and I think a crochet hook was involved. We made them into doily circles. Can’t remember exactly how I did it now. I remember the four nails too!

Good Morning Mary, We are finally settled in our Florida Nest as my husband refers to our little condo and I am catching up on you recent posts. When we left N.C. it was lovely but friends said we got out before conditions turned soggy, hope you have not been experiencing too much rain. I adore your Winter Tree as well as this knitted wreath. That is beautiful! Yes, I am a yarn hoarder! I knit and crochet and am heading toward learning to loom to see if I like it. There are so many gorgeous yarns available both in the stores and online, they are hard to resist. I have many projects in the pipeline for the future. Not enough hours in the day…..thanks for sharing!

Mary, I have never tried knitting or crocheting. Your wreath is perfect for winter and looks so lovely on your mirror. I would love to learn needlepoint. I did enjoy cross-stitching and smocking, that is about it with my handwork! Have a delightful Wednesday!
I actually took a knitting class and cried the whole six weeks. I suck at knitting. LOL But this looks easy and I’m going to give it a try. I love your idea of a winter nesting tree. We actually have a Christmas room in our house that includes our gym equipment and treadmill. It’s up year round. When it’s cold and dreary in the winter months it’s very soothing to head into the Christmas room and do a little workout or hop on the treadmill and it seems to lighten the mood.
