Happy Sunday!
Here’s a little weekend waterview from Lake Norman.
It’s the Dog Days of Summer and we’re need of a cool down!
The dog days of summer are the hot, sultry days of summer.
Historically they are the period following the heliacal rising of the star system Sirius,
which Greek and Roman astrology connected with heat, drought, sudden thunderstorms,
lethargy, fever, mad dogs, and bad luck.
These days they are considered the hottest, most uncomfortable part of summer
in the Northern Hemisphere.
It’s been a hot, steamy and stormy week.
We’re dog gone excited about going for a boat ride to cool off. . .
And then immediately run out of steam.
There has been lots of boat activity and rafting in our backyard this week . . .
Typically after Labor Day boating activity comes to halt.
This year with most continuing to work from home and remote learning,
I’m guessing the lake won’t quiet down until the end of October.
We enjoyed an evening boat ride last night, I’ll leave you with a few photos.
Hope you’re finding a way to stay cool ♥
Update: We were boating this morning at 8:07 am so we didn’t feel the effects
of the 5.1 magnitude earthquake in North Carolina, the largest since 1916.
I was out on our gazebo over water this morning & did not “feel it.,” here on Lake Anna, VA They were “comparing it to the one we had” which was a 5.7 in 2011. franki
We’re in Shelby, NC not far from you and we didn’t feel it but all our neighbors did.
We felt the earthquake in Burlington, NC!
Mary, We love your water view weekend shots. The girls are adorable. We’re too far away from you to have felt it. Hope there’s no significant damage. Stay safe and enjoy the lake! Clara ♥️
Lovely pics! Stay safe!
Beautiful photos. Thanks for sharing. Too far to feel it (Georgia) Stay safe
Enjoyed your photos and the cute dogs, they make my day.
I didn’t feel it but friends in Harlan KY did. Stay safe!
So glad to hear you are safe as I just heard about the quake on NPR w/ in the last 10 min. They reported it was felt as far as Atlanta.
Thank you Mary for the great pictures! We have had the hottest summer on record here in Maine as well!! I am so thankful to have a pool as we can’t even go beyond waist deep in the ocean due to the Shark population!! We look forward to September and October!!! Our little Bichon Chester does not like the heat either! Happy Boating!!
Experiencing an earthquake can be quite unsettling (pun unintended!). Growing up and living in Los Angeles, you’d think more of us would be used to these but we’re not. One of the most surprising things re an earthquake is the noise: everything in your home shakes and rattles including pictures on the walls. That sound combined with a shaking/rolling ground can be extremely disconcerting! So I’m glad you and your family were out on the lake and did not experience the quake. Stay safe!
Glad you had no damage from earthquakes or summer storms. We are having an unusually cool August here on the southern California coast. Of course, our second hottest month is usually September after August, so we may be in for some uncomfortable weather ahead. In the meantime, I’m enjoying the cool breezes.
Thank you for posting such beautiful pictures of your lake and pups. I always enjoy them.
The running on the dock photos made me smile…..
Mary
Happy you are safe! Did not feel the quake.
Loved the photos of Lake Norman.
Lola and Sophie are so adorable.
Thanks for sharing………
Have a great Sunday!
The water views have cooled me down this hot Sunday afternoon. I had not read about the earthquake, so glad you had no damage. The girls are adorable!
Hi Mary! We felt the quake here in Greenville, SC. It was very noticeable and like another poster commented, a little unsettling.
My house shook in Chapel Hill, NC. My cats were startled and and so was I. We all stared at each other.
Ohhhhh, love the lake chairs and to be able to sit and stare at the water is so refreshing, (with your heat, I’d be IN the water on a floaty!) I know the boat ride was extra special too. The girls know fun and their little expressions show how much they enjoy boating. Blesses me to see their antics, I love seeing them race down the dock, I would too if I could go boating, hehe. ♥️🐾 I hope no real damage to anyone, but what a shock to hear of that earthquake! Crazy! I hope I never experience one. Glad you all are safe. Yes, these are the dog days of summer and I need to get in more beach time, I need a break from all the yard work we’ve done this summer. 😉
Mary, happy to know you didn’t feel the earthquake. That would have been frightening anywhere, but can’t imagine feeling it when out on the lake. Your pups are so full of personality!
Your daytime and evening views of the lake are gorgeous, Mary. I’m happy to know that you didn’t feel the earthquake. Happy Sunday!
No earthquake here in Michigan, but it was 90 degrees. I’m sitting on my deck swing enjoying every bit of it, along with all the sounds of nature and watching the butterflies flitting from flower to flower. I love summer. I’m glad everyone is safe.
We didn’t feel it on the NC coast, but my daughter felt it in Valdese, NC. She said things fell off tables and it took her a minute to figure out what was going on. No damage ND her dogs jumped on her to protect her!🌞
Believe it or not, Mr. P. said he felt a tremor while sitting in his Stressless recliner this morning! And he did not even know it had happened. I did not feel it, I don’t sit still long enough, lol. This really has been the strangest of strange years.
Incredibly busy on your lake in that one photo, much more peaceful in the hours you choose to go out. We would be that way too. Yesterday I made a quick run to our antique booths right before close at 5pm, and our river looked busier than our interstates. Have a good week, Mary.
PS…we are 168 miles north of Sparta!
Felt it in Burlington NC and I didn’t like it!
Glad you did not have any effects of the earthquake.
The dog days of summer are here. The heat is zapping my energy! I have walked seven days a week since March but I couldn’t take the heat today.
The girls look like they enjoyed the boat ride. Great pictures. Looks like Mom and Dad enjoyed the ride too.
I was wondering if you felt the quake! Being on the water or even just looking at it is a wonderful way to instantly cool down…I’m so glad Sophie and Lola love their boat rides! Boating traffic on the Gulf Coast has been non stop, on weekends we are AMAZED at the number of boats out and about…I think people are really enjoying doing something so normal since there are so many things we can’t do right now. Your photographs are gorgeous! I tried to leave a comment on your Bee Potting Shed post this morning but it didn’t show up…totally adorable, I’m crazy over the apron hanging on the door! Bee-utiful!!
Jenna
Thought of you instantly when it happened and checked your blog to no news, glad to read you were enjoying the lake, how fun to be able to float 24 hours a day!
Your views are lovely Mary! And the pups look so happy – excited or resting! :) I’m glad you weren’t hit too hard with the earthquake – what an amazing year! Thanks for helping us cool off with your gorgeous photos!
I did indeed feel my bed shaking at 8:07. I wasn’t sure what was happening – I was startled and kind of disoriented since I was in deep sleep. Then I realized the entire room and everything in it was shaking. My daughter came running down the hall asking “what was that”. Even then we weren’t certain as to what we had experienced, until the neighbors started to send text and everyone went outside. I have never experienced and earthquake and I can say with certainty – never want to experience another. Fort Mill, SC Felt the earthquake.
Hope everyone is having a blessed day.
I so love spending the day on the lake. So peaceful and cool. Love that the girls love their boating time.
Mary, beautiful views!! Our family have always called this time the DOG DAYS OF SUMMER! Except the this year we started the DOG DAYS OF SUMMER in June…at least, in our neck of the woods!! I’m thinking we are going to have an early fall….just my opinion!! I bless the person that invented air conditioning!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰
We had just woke up In Winston-Salem and we thought at first that there was a hail storm (it was the windows rattling) but then realized what was happening and thankfully no damage. Always love seeing your sweet puppies.
We did not feel anything here…Such an “historic” event. Love seeing the girls and I must say that when I visit my brother and we have an early evening cruise, it is my favorite time to be on the water.
I love the photo of Lola & Sophie with their noses in the air. I spent summers on the lake with my grandparents on Lake Martin near Alex City, AL, and every time I see your lake photos I can just smell the lake water! Instant happiness for me. I am east of Atlanta, about 50 miles, & I definitely felt the earthquake, it was the strangest sensation when the chair I was sitting in started shaking from side to side. Happy Weekend!
Glad all of you were okay after the earthquake. Didn’t feel anything in the Fredericksburg, Virginia area like I did in August of 2011. Thank you for sharing photos of beautiful Lake Norman and your adorable pups.
