Plant some vintage charm in your garden by upcycling an old bicycle to garden on wheels! You’ll find steps and tips to plant bicycle baskets with flowers.

Happy Friday!
I’m sharing a fun project and a little gardening on wheels. . . petals for pedals and planting a vintage bicycle!

I picked up a vintage Schwinn bicycle about 10 years ago at
a favorite antique mall, for the bargain price of three pumpkins.

The dealer selling it informed me she wasn’t road-worthy with her worn tires . . .
I told her it wasn’t a concern since I would be planting her. 🌸

I added a rear bicycle basket, several years ago to plant in,
securing with it to the frame with zip ties.

I used another pair of zip ties to help balance the weight of the rear basket
after filling it with potting soil and flowers.

Here are the easy steps to fill bicycle baskets with blooms!

I started with a roll of Natural Coconut Coir Liner, cutting it and piecing it to size to fit the baskets
as I couldn’t find any coco liners that were the right size.
I ending up using two rolls, doubling the liner, to help the baskets retain some moisture once filled with soil.

Coco fiber dries out quickly, especially in windy or sunny conditions, so I also used plastic bags as liners, using floral / greening pins to hold the bags in place before adding my potting soil. I poked a few holes in the bottom of the bags to allow water to drain properly. You want to retain moisture in your baskets, but still have adequate drainage.

I’m a fan of Miracle-Gro Potting Mix for my containers. . .
it lives up to the hype and does grow plants twice as big.
I planted the baskets with a combination of sun loving annuals . . .

🌸 Calibrachoa (Million Bells)
🌸 Angelonia
🌸 Black Sweet Potato Vine
🌸 Creeping Jenny
🌸 Vancouver Geranium
Carefully remove plants from their nursery pots, gently loosen the roots, and place them in the basket with a good quality potting mix. Arrange them to your liking, ensuring the top of the root ball is slightly below the rim and water thoroughly until you see water drain from the bottom of the baskets.

I found this mossy thatched roof birdhouse at Lowe’s when I bought my annuals. . .

I used zip ties to attach the birdhouse to the handle bars.

To keep the bike planted and upright, I used a piece of rebar to keep her from falling over. 🤞

We have drip irrigation by The Potting Shed
so we added a drip line to each basket to combat the summer heat
as the bicycle will get afternoon sun.

The bike has lost her burgundy finish over the years.
I considered spray painting her,
but decided I liked her natural look and rusty patina.

She needs a vine growing up the spokes of her tires. . .
Maybe Morning Glory or Black-eyed Susan Vine!

I like to use Miracle-Gro Water Soluble Bloom Booster Flower Food, applying it every 10 days to 2 weeks on my planters and containers. You can use in it in your flower gardens or containers and with all types of perennial and annual flowering plants, including roses, hydrangeas, dahlias, hibiscus, daisies, azaleas, begonias, petunias, and camellias to boost the bloom!

Oh, Mary – such adorable whimsey! You do it so perfectly every time. Just ordered the 5 pound bloom booster from your link. Thank you. I will share it with both my daughters, as we are all out of plant food at the moment and it is a good value going larger. Have a bloomtastic day! ♥
Adorable addition! Thanks for the tutorial. Enjoy your weekend! It’s triple digits here with the rain and humidity. Stay cool and hydrated. Clara❤️
I’ve got one as well! Swedish Ivy evidently loves the spot…the basket overfloweth!! franki
Hello Mary, I love a garden on wheels and your old Schwinn bike is perfect! Your flowers are gorgeous! You have given me two ideas for my 3 wheel Schwinn…a birdhouse that would be great. My adult tricycle came with a basket on back, now I need to add one to the handlebars. Thanks for the inspiration and Happy Friday!
Mary, such a great idea for an old bicycle. I’ve always hated to part with old bicycles and wagons. This is going to give some new life to them and be so pretty too. I really love the birdhouse. Very cute!
Thanks for the tips and suggestions!
Have a very happy weekend!
Adorable Mary! The moss birdhouse on the handlebars takes it over the top!
That was the ultimate American made bicycle as a kid. Ihad the 24″ version for a long time, and later in college this exact bike. Many miles dressed in skirts for my library job 1968 when in college. Wish I could ride it now. Hugs, Sandi
Your blooming bicycle looks perfect parked in front of your potting shed, Mary! I liked your tips with the coco liner and plastic bags. I need to do that next time in my hanging baskets. Have a beautiful weekend filled with Joy! ❤️
Now you don’t have to ride! You can sit back & enjoy the view!❤️🌸🌺🪷🌼🌻🌷🌾
How sweet the blooming bike is. Love the florals in the basket. You are so lucky to have so many lovely flowers in your garden.
Cute! Cute! Cute!
I love the birdhouse on the bike. Clever and whimsical.
Very creative – cycling into beauty one flower or plant at a time!
Such a cute idea Mary!

What a darling idea! I’ve made a note of your plant list. The Calibrachoa and Vancouver Geranium are new to me, and I need to reintroduce Angelonia to my garden. Thank you for always inspiring me to try something new, Mary. Have a great week!
The Schwinn is so cute Mary, and it is the perfect addition to your already lovely garden. Love the birdhouse. Have a great week!
