My friend Carolyn and I gave a baby shower last weekend
in anticipation of the arrival of our friend
Annie’s first grandchild. . .
It’s a Boy!
Due to arrive next month~
We had a lot fun hunting for big game
or little game in this case :) for the shower. . .
. . . Safari animals, to decorate the chandelier
and onesies to hang on the mantle.
Lions, zebras and monkeys,
oh my . . .
On safari at Target, I found receiving blankets
to use on the table in lieu of a tablecloth.
Ideal for our animal theme and
serving Swaddled Chicken Salad Bites~
Chicken salad, wrapped or swaddled in cucumber ribbons.
Cut English cucumbers in half and use a mandolin to make ribbons. I found 1/16 was the right thickness to roll and the ideal ratio of cucumber-to-chicken salad.
Layer the ribbons on paper towels to remove the excess moisture until ready to use. Use your favorite chicken salad recipe/spread~ I pulsed the chicken salad in the food processor until is was a smoother consistency to spread easily. Spread, roll, and then secure with a toothpick. You could use an herbed cream cheese spread instead of chicken salad.
Annie had two adorable vintage nursery scales from her retail days that she used to display baby bath & body products. We put them into use again for a centerpiece and to serve our shower food.
Easy Delivery Cups~
Athens Mini Fillo Shells from the freezer section in the grocery store make a quick & easy delivery for your fillings, sweet or savory.
We filled them with a mixture of goat cheese, fig preserves, topped with chopped pecans.
Animals were rounded up in the form of crackers and added to white chocolate popcorn, made with almond bark candy coating, for a crunchy mixture of salty and sweet!
We used the dad-to-be, Adam’s baby cup
for a scoop to serve the mix.
More a procedure than a recipe, adjust your mix~ adding nuts, pretzels, and candy, custom blending for your holiday or occasion.
You can variations for Easter, Valentine’s Day, Thanksgiving, July 4th, and Halloween, here.
A version of a cheese straw,
Cheddar ‘Due Date’ Wafers~
Chopped dates are a sweet addition to the balance the heat of the chipotle cheddar cheese.
The dough can be made 24 hours ahead, then sliced and baked. Store in an airtight container for up to a week.
is a favorite, and one of Southern Living’s 2011 Best Recipes.
Easy to throw together and it can double as a side dish or appetizer, made 8 to 24 hours in advance.
Shrimp, artichoke hearts, black olives, feta cheese, and grape tomatoes are marinated in olive oil, white balsamic vinegar and garlic-and-herb dressing mix.
You can also find it served in individual martini glasses for our Christmas Cookie exchange. You can find a recipe, here.
Very cute Mary! Lovin’ that big ole cheese and cracker display, I’d pull my seat right up to it:@) Everything looks great and I’m sure everyone had a fun time, congrats to your friend!
Oh, Mary! So many cute, fun ideas! (as always!) I knew I bought that antique baby scale with the wicker basket for a grand reason (shower prop)…now if I would just have a grandbaby or 2 on the way….
What a fun theme, Mary, and I know your friend appreciated all the special touches that you and Carolyn put into the wonderful shower. I’m oohing and ahhing over the food and decorations. What happy memories for Annie and the new parents. xo
Oh Mary, you did it again! Soooo many ideas for a baby shower. Looking forward to the recipes . Love the animal theme, it is so in!

I have been patiently waiting and hoping you would post about the baby shower! It is over the top cuteness, all the decor and touches of course, but the brilliant part has got to be the food! The names are adorable!! My favorite is the chicken salad swaddles, and great idea to puree the chicken salad first. I also loved the Daddy’s baby mug as a snack server! Cheddar Due Date wafers and Baby Makes Three~too clever! know you had a ball creating this event with good friends for a very special baby! Thanks so much for the peek!
Jenna
Thank you so much for this. It is a beautiful way to remember everything special about this day & the upcoming birth of this baby boy, Alexander.
Love you, Annie
Mary, this shower is full of clever ideas. You are a master at this! I always smile when I read the names you give to food ~ so clever! Love the idea of using the scales. Gives me inspiration for our scale. Never thought about using it to serve food at a party. The animal theme is adorable and you certainly scored some trophies on your safari.
Finally getting some rain here. Yipee! ~ Sarah
LOVE that red checked rug!
LOVE the cute onsies on the mantle!
LOVE the entire theme of the shower, especially the Animal Cracker Popcorn!
LOVE the vintage scales (I have my Mom’s…it is 76 yrs old!)
Thanks for the link to the shrimp/olives/artichoke recipe…YUMMO!
You & Carolyn must be related, the way you set all this up…you gals make a dynamic duo!
Mary this is the grandest babyshower preparation I have seen and the mother-to-be must have felt like Cinderalla with all this sweetness a feast for eye. The theme so well carried out and thoughtful.
Your table for the guests is nothing less than a feast. I hope to try some of the receipes.
We have a brandnew graat-grandson; a gift straight from the ‘arms of God’ to one of our granddaughters. They have three daughters and the new gift from GOD is a son and he was born Sept. 19th.
I do have to ask if the lovely kitchen is in your house. LOVE white cabinets.
Wow Mary what an adorable baby shower! I love all the recipes and will most certainly be trying them out, especially that chocolate popcorn… you say chocolate and I’m there, giggle! it looks like it was a lovely day for all!
Hugs
What a wonderful shower you threw, presented, as always SO beautifully! Love the theme, the FOOD, and the cute favors! How special the Mother to be must have felt. A grandchild is such a blessing.
Oh my! What a Baby Shower!! So many wonderful ideas and you all pulled it together so artfully. What a FUN party. I’m sure the mom-to-be was absolutely thrilled ~ I’m going back for another look to admire it all again!
Oh my word, all of your party decor and food look amazing. What a fantastic idea with the baby scales. Love it all. Thanks so much for linking to Inspire Me. Hugs, Marty
Mary, You are over-the-top sensational! Loved the swaddled chicken salad bites. I used to do teas for ladies groups & still do small ones for intimate friends & family. Thanks for all the great ideas, links & tips. Blessings!
What a beautiful table for the “mom to be”…you are indeed the perfect person to help create a beautiful food presentation for such an event…I love the wicker baby scale…seeing it again gave me seller’s remorse as I just sold mine recently..how wonderful it looks on the table!
I loved the Shower Recipes and the Shower story as it made me recall “back in the day” when I and all of my friends and their friends were popping out babies left, right and center and it seemed we hosted or attended a baby shower a week. My first daughter made an appearance two weeks early and so my Mom, who never had a baby shower although she had three babies, attended as the honorary me. She loved it!
There aren’t enough words to describe this baby shower! This was fit for a Royal Prince or Princess..I loved the swaddled chicken salad bites..those could be used at any special occassion, not just baby showers. I love the baby scale idea for displaying food . Where in the world did you find all those type scales in the first place. They would be considered vintage type now. I quickly looked at this, and will go back today and see what all I missed and just by reading some of the comments, I know my eyes didn’t take it all in the first time. Thanks for sharing your ideas and beautiful pictures. Is there anything you can’t do? You are so creative. You should have your own party business.
Love the animal cracker popcorn crunch! I’m going to use it for my daughter’s baby shower. I’ll have to hunt down the white chocolate popcorn and almond bark candy. I’ve never seen either around, although that’s not saying much because I try not to be super observant in the candy section. I try and avoid it most of the time, lol! :)
Mary, Absolutely beautiful and will be an inspiration in an upcoming baby tea. What is the serving piece used for the Cheddar Due Date Wafers? Is it a Wilton Armetale? I love it’s size and presence.
Continue with your beautiful presentations. The world can use a lot more beauty and thoughtfulness.
Do you have a general ratio for the animal cracker crunch (and similar mixes)? I got a whole lot of everything, and I’m not sure if I should try to do equal parts?

Thanks Mimi! It was my friend’s serving piece so I’m not sure as to the manufacturer, but it was a decorative aluminum cracker tray :)
Did you make the white chocolate popcorn for the mix, or did you buy it somewhere?
Made it, you can find the how to here: https://homeiswheretheboatis.net/2014/03/24/bunny-trail-mix-popcorn/
SO many great ideas! I’m going to steal the animal crackers trail mix idea for my jungle party. Thank you!
