Mystery Ingredient & Halloween Fun: Creepy Sprinkles Lab

Halloween Dipped & Sprinkled Apples-001

I’m joining Rattlebridge Farm for Foodie Friday

and the return of The Mystery Ingredient Club!

 Our Mystery Ingredient this month~

Wilton Creepy Sprinkles Lab,

timely for planning a Happy Haunting!

Thank you Michael Lee!

The Creepy Sprinkles include Bones, Black & Green Jimmies,

Orange Sugar, and

Black, Green & Orange Jimmies.

DSC_8649-001

I couldn’t resist adding a few Candy Eyeballs

from Wilton along with the sprinkles

(I found mine at Target).

DSC_8402-001

I had a surplus of apples from Apple Picking~

2 1/2 inch Gala apples~

a fun size to serve in a cupcake liner

and to make chocolate-dipped & sprinkled

Halloween Treats!

DSC_8435-001

I used both chocolate and vanilla flavored bark coating from the baking aisle in the grocery store. Follow the directions on the back of the package for melting.

DSC_8446-001

I inserted a ‘food-safe’ twig in the apple prior to dipping but you could use a craft stick or dowel.

Since I didn’t have access to an apple tree, after much googling, I determined that our River Birch trees are considered ‘food-safe’.

DSC_8440-001

There is a bit of a trick to making these treats~

you need to let the chocolate set up a bit,

before using the sprinkles, but it once the coating begins

to harden, it happens quickly.

DSC_8452-001

Dip your apples into the chocolate coating and let the excess chocolate drip off your apple and back into your cauldron. . .

Set your dipped apples onto wax paper and spoon the sprinkles onto the apples while the chocolate is setting up (rolling the apples in the sprinkles rather than sprinkling them on makes a scary mess ).

DSC_8633-001

I mixed part of vanilla with the chocolate together in a separate bowl to swirl together and coat a few of the apples.

DSC_8663-001

DSC_8419-001

The candy bone sprinkles took more time, placing them right before the chocolate was set, otherwise they slide down the chocolate coating in an avalanche for a bone chilling effect. . .

DSC_8422-001

Bone setting is a project requiring patience

or for a die-hard Halloween enthusiast :)

DSC_8424-001

DSC_8669-001

I had the orange sugar left

 from my Creepy Lab~

lethal rimmer with an arsenic label

for a sinister cocktail. . .

DSC_9217-001

And I found spooky Halloween stickers from World Market

 for $3.99. . .

DSC_9205-001

Each tube from the Creepy Lab just happens

 to hold 1 1/2 ounces of potion. . .

DSC_9231-001

Pick your Poison

and shake up a Skeletini~

DSC_9179-002

Skeletini Ingredients:

~1 1/2 ounces of Poison #9, aka vodka, citrus-infused or Creepy Crystal Head Vodka

~ 1/2 ounce Witches’ Brew, aka Grand Marnier

~ 1 1/2 ounces of Vampire Blood, aka Pomegranate juice

~1 ounce freshly squeezed poisoned lime juice

~ Black Cat Arsenic, aka orange sugar for rimming

DSC_9198-001

DSC_9163-001

Adjust the ratio of your potions if you’d

like a more lethal cocktail :)

DSC_9201-001

Add only add top quality

spider bites if you dare. . .

Hi Mary, As usual I have gotten lost visiting your fascinating links to the birch tree and crystal vodka sites. You are the most fun mad scientist I know and next time I visit my orthopedist or optometrist I will think of you. We used to chew on little birch branches–they taste like beech nut gum! Linda

I have never seen prettier caramel apples Mary! I have quite a few small apples from our apple picking over the weekend, and now I know what I will use them for ;o) The prize package has arrived and I am smitten with all the goodies. It gave me several ideas for Halloween! Thank you!

  19. October 3, 2013 at 8:11 pm

Mary, I knew you would have fun playing with the tubes of sprinkles. What a darling idea to add the labels. You always find the perfect details!
Originally I had planned to make caramel apples and pretzel sticks along with my moon pie project, but being away from home and time restraints didn’t allow the extra play. Now I have your excellent model of the petite apples to make these for a treat.
Thanks for sharing the fun! ~ Sarah

You did a great job, Mary! Have fun eating all that, lol. I am in a sugar coma, we just ate what I made in lieu of dinner!
Do the candy melts work better on the apples? I always use melted choc., but it can be tricky.
