I feathered my nest, aka Potting Shed,
with some fresh winter nesting materials~
clearing away the Christmas tartan,
leaving the pine cones and cutting
some fresh sprigs of fragrant pine.
Snow bird salad plates, on sale at Pottery Barn
after Christmas, came home to roost.
They’ve flocked together
among the birdhouses for a little tabletop
dining and seed buffet.
Bird ornaments have yet to migrate
with all the other Christmas decorations
and are roosting here for winter.
And a pair of gardening gloves is
keeping flatware warm & cozy!
A knife with a bird engraving was
discovered at a favorite antique mall,
nesting in a bowl with other silverplate,
a lone species and endangered. . .
So like a good conservationist, I rescued it from
being scratched and brought it home to roost!
Feeders are crowded & busy with our colder
than normal temperatures this winter. . .
And keeping seed available and
feeders filled is a full-time job :)

My favorite hands down is the adorable Wren! He makes my day everytime I hear his happy warble out at the feeders. In the Spring they are the first ones to nest in a wreath I have by the door.

I just love this post. Hands down my favorite bird is the Red Breasted Nuthatch.
This is such an inspired setting–brava! I love our pairs of titmice (titmouses?) and cardinals, but it is the Red-Bellied Woodpecker that I love to see.
We enjoy all the birds at our feeders, but during the winter the cardinals brings a beautiful red to the scene.
I don’t have a lot of variety, but I think my favorite is still the cardinal. Love to see those beautiful red males on a backdrop of snow!

loved this post…not a winter bird so I don’t know if this counts but my absolute favorite are the tiny hummingbirds…they make my heart sing.
I have so many I love that it’s hard to pick a favorite! My back yard bests are bluebirds and hummingbirds which are plentiful here in the Georgia countryside. My daughter lives in Australia and colorful lorikeets settle on her deck railings so I guess it depends on where I am!!! I subscribe and follow on FB.

I have honeysuckle growing right outside my kitchen porch love to see (and hear) all the humming birds. They are my favorite. I wish they could stay all year long.

Gorgeous post and tablescape. My husband and I laugh that all our artwork in the house is always of birds! And we have them outside the window too! I love the woodpeckers, not just our little Downy but this summer we enjoyed the Hairy woodpecker too. I would like to see more of them this year.
I would have to say the Cardinal in his magnificent coat of red catches my eye.
I don`t really have a favorite : They are all so sweet to watch ! Whenever there`s a newcomer I`m happy !

I suppose my favorite bird to see at my feeder is a cardinal. They stand out against the backdrop of the outdoors – certainly a bright spot in the drab winter scenery! Then it would have to be the chickadee, second. I love wrens but they are bug eaters and seldom, if ever, drop by my feeder!

What a pretty post honoring our feathers friends, Mary. My favorite bird to see at my feeder is the cardinal. I have had a hawk come perch in my yard four times since Christmas Eve. Although it never feeds, I get so excited when I see it. My hubby always could spot them while driving or hiking and now it’s visiting me. xo

Happy 4th Mary! And I couldn’t have picked a better place to celebrate it than your adorable potting shed…my personal favorite. Add my second weakness “little birdies”and I ‘m sold. Today’s post is officially one of my favorites! This winter the red-bellied woodpecker has been stopping by the feeder and I just love seeing him there. :)
Here in Northeastern Kansas this winter we got hit hard with cold weather. To my surprise, one very cold afternoon, I saw 5 bluebirds at my heated birdbath on the back deck. I was so surprised to see them leisurely drinking and hanging around for quite some time. I loved it as I’m an avid bird watcher but haven’t ever seen bluebirds in the winter time.
I also saw a cedar waxwing perched on a branch in a tree near my bird feeder which was a first for me.
We live near a the city lake and we’ve also see a pair of bald eagles which was a glorious sight. We’ve gotten several pictures as well and heard they nest near here too.
My wish list is full for now and I’m looking forward to telling you about all the birds I might see for the first time this Spring…I’ll keep you posted.

Male cardinals are my favorite. I collect anything vintage using cardinals and decorate my home with them.
I have a potting cottage and always get inspiration from your e mails. I have several favorite birds but hearing the cheerful jenny wren’s voice makes me smile. Bluebirds are special and I have a shelf that I built on my front porch for the Eastern Phoebes who have nested there for five years. I live in the woods in Alabama and am blessed to be privy to a lot of nature.
I’m happy any time I see a bird rather than a squirrel or chipmunk perched on my feeder! Love the garden gloves used to hold the flatware.

Alas, that happens rarely because it’s usually too cold here for them, but occasionally, we have a slightly warmer winter that allows them to stay around a little longer. But I am “Mom” to flocks of other birds, including my second favorites, those cute and friendly Chickadees, so I’m blessed to have them. Well,I love to see Robins,and red breasted nuthatches,but my favorite which is rare to see at our feeder is the red crossbill……they are so little and bright….love them!
I am not sure how to leave a comment on your site, so will try this. My favorite bird to see on our feeders and, actually nesting in one of our bird houses, is the wren. The first time we saw this little fellow we were looking for a bird the size of a robin because of his huge voice! This little guy is such an inspiration to watch “feathering his nest”. He is so energetic and never stops carrying his “finds” to the nest, singing all the while. To watch him trying to get the sticks he brings into the bird house provides us with hours of entertainment. Once he attracts his Mrs., she immediately starts throwing many of those sticks right out of the house. He doesn’t seem to mind, however, he just keeps singing his song!

This is one of my favorite potting shed arrangements! Just love birds! There have been sightings of 3 bald eagles around our lake (I’m keeping my eyes peeled) swooping down capturing a meal (poor ducks). They must be a beautiful sight! I must agree the male cardinal is lovely against a snowy back drop. Congrats on your 4th anniv. I enjoy your blog every morning with my coffee!

Oops forgot to tell you my favorite bird to feed. In the winter: cardinals. In the summer: gold finch.
Although the red Cardinal is beautiful in the winter and the bright yellow of a finch gives you awe, I would have to say the Robin is my favorite. She’s a good mama and can even look a bit scraggly at certain times but she’s so friendly. She will pull those worms out of the grass while I’m sitting real close.

My favorite at the moment is watching the hummingbirds come to my feeder. I liked on Facebook.
My favorite would have to be the male, and female, cardinal. I enjoy it so much when they come as a couple and he scouts out the feeder to make sure that it’s safe for her. He then waits and watches over her, while she eats.
I’m anxiously awaiting the arrival of my hummingbirds from their winter home! May seems so far away! ;)

Enjoying my very loaded, very berrylicious Holly tree, I get a large flock of Cedar Waxwings every winter for one whole day! They cover my berry filled bush which, lucky for me, is right by my living room window. So I get a full day to marvel in their precise markings up very close! God is a brilliant artist! They have superhero masks and wingtips that look like red rubber coated fingernails! I look forward to their visit each year!

I love to see the bright red Cardinal at our bird feeder. That is when the pesky squirrels aren’t hogging it all!
I am a subscriber, a facebook and pinterest follower. I love your blog and look forward to seeing you in my “mailbox” each day. I love seeing my hummingbirds come back each May and the Robins this winter and the beautiful American goldfinches that visit my feeders. Unfortunately, lately we’ve been visited by a Hawk that keeps trying to make a meal of my songbirds. He’s beautiful, but I don’t want him chasing down my sweet birdies.
I was thrilled a couple of months ago to see a Phainopepla. These look like black cardinals with red eyes. Striking!
I live in Washington and we wait anxiously each spring for our dear goldfinches to come for feeding. They are our absolute favorite!
My favorite bird to watch in the feeder by my window is a carolina chickadee. I love all the birds. So blessed to have a variety here.
Here in the Pacific Northwest, hummingbirds and juncos are our favorites. The hummingbird feeder is up year around. The juncos gather the seed I scatter just outside my door on our deck. Oh wait! Chickadees and Stellar Jays are real characters also.

I truly admire your attention to detail and this feathered nest is no exception. The birdseed in the cups & glasses is adorable as are the rustic birdhouses.
I’ve never had bird feeders because I’m a cat person and I just don’t think it’s fair to the birds to tempt them into an area patroled by a cat. However, my Dad loved to feed the birds where he lived, especially the cardinals.

Hi, Mary! This is a very uplifting tablescape. It lets me know that winter is not all ugly and dreary and unkind to the spirits as I have felt most of this winter. I can actually see the promise of Spring in this! Beautiful PB plates! I didn’t make it to their after-Christmas sale. Rats! :-( Very clever way to display that rescued knife and the flatware!
I don’t think I’ve ever actually seen a snow bird. I might have and just didn’t know it. We have all kinds of birds flitting around here along with tons of geese who hang out at the nearby lake. They’re beautiful to watch flying in a chevron overhead, but I have to remember not to look up without cover lest I get a face full of gooey poop! :-)
If I had a bird feeder, I think I’d want to see bluebirds feeding there. That was my brother’s trucking handle. He was killed in a motorcycle accident back in 1999. When my Mom was in the Senate, she rallied to get the bluebird as the symbol on our Missouri license plates in his honor, and that’s now what we have…which makes sense because it is also our state bird!

I love to see all birds that come to my feeders…some of them drop seeds on the ground for my visiting little bunny and mourning doves. Watching the birds make the winter months more tolerable for me.
I love looking out my kitchen window everyday and see several male red cardinal in my my back yard. They lift my spirits and make me feel very happy.
I love watching the hummingbirds at the feeder and bathing in my fountains.

I love your blog with all of the beautiful pictures. I am also a bird watcher and keep a journal of the birds I see each day at home and also when we travel I get to see some that we don’t get in southern Oklahoma. I have never left a comment on a blog before but you inspired me with your love of birds. I would have to say the chickadees are my favorites. They always make me smile! Hi Mary i love your posts so much so classy and elegant but I really really love when you decorate the shed. that is just the cutest most unique space and what you do inside is amazing. where does your creativity come from in the shed? We live in San Diego and one of the best birds we have at our feeder is this little yellow bellied finch. I am a bird lover, of all kinds, & while there are many much prettier, I love Mourning Doves. I have platform feeders for them, & they always arrive in pairs. Their plaintive song really touches my heart.

I love so many birds it is hard to pick just one. The call of the bright beautiful oriole is so sweet to hear but I do love the precious hummingbirds that play in my garden all day. When I walk by the Bay I love seeing herons and snowy egrets catching fish along the shore…so as you can see I have many favorites where I live. At my bird feeder, I would like to see a CHICKADEE. My father called me, “Chickadee,” and now I find myself calling my daughter, “Chickadee.” I’d choose Pottery Barn, as it’s in the Dallas area. Theresa Ball
I have several types of feeders. My favorite is watching the Baltimore and Orchard Orioles that we have visit us every summer. Last year the female Orchard Oriole knocked on my bedroom window every morning for a little conversation and then knocked on my living room for a visit.
Hi Mary, Congratulations on four successful years and thank you for entertaining and enlightening us for so long! Please continue for at least another four! We fill our feeders every morning. Nellie knows it is part of the routine and leads the way back and forth. I love all the birds, but right now I am especially enjoying three couples, all woodpeckers: downy, hairy, and the huge red-bellied. How can a person just have one?? We are blessed with beautiful golden finches, Western bluebirds, Cedar Waxwings, bright yellow (male) orioles and the ever-entertaining Anna’s hummingbirds. We try to make our back garden inviting for our feathered friends.

Our bluejays are imitating the hawks which have flown away for the winter. Not sure why they want to sound like the hawks! I love to see the hummingbirds at our fountain.

We live in hot, arid Southern CA, which means that we don’t have a lot of the beautiful colored birds which abound in colder, eastern and northern areas. However, we do have a birdfeeder that we must keep constantly full because the birds come right up to the window and stare us down if it goes empty! Really! We get tons of birds and I am constantly scouting for migratory ones that stop by on their way to Mexico or further south–who knows where their little wings take them! Whenever I see one that is not from around here, I run to my bird book to see if I can find out the name of the bird and where it’s from. We have beautiful Scrub Jays, which are my favorite. They are our California version of the Blue Jay. They eat the raw unshelled peanuts which we leave for them! They are so beautiful!

Lovely post. I enjoy birds so much. Last spring I purchased a blue bird house but I didn’t get it up until after the bluebirds were around. I am hoping for a family this spring. My daughter gave me a blue bird Christmas ornament this year and my husband said, ” That may be the only bluebird you get.” I hope to prove him wrong but because our home sits on a wooded lot he may be right. Your bird ornaments are so pretty.

I think there’s nothing more beautiful in Winter than a male Cardinal at the feeder. The bright red of his feathers are a gorgeous contrast to the white snow!
It’s rare, but every now and then I get a beautiful indigo bunting. It always makes my day when I see one.

Your potting shed is my favorite and has been the inspiration of my own potting shed in progress. I have several feeders outside my sunroom. Love to sit in the morning with my coffee and watch them all perch and eat! My favorites are the little yellow finch, but the cardinals are beautiful! I love this whole setting, Mary! The bird plates are great. I think my husband would kill me if I brought any more plates into our home. : ) Love those gloves, too. They make for a very creative utensil holder. I always love seeing cardinals perched outside on our tree branches. They always seem to bring some much needed color to the winter landscape.

Goodness Mary – how can we pick just one? In the spring, I love little Jenny Wren with her very loud joyous song and scolding rattle, the little Yellow Finches with their flashes of sunshine yellow, the beautiful Baltimore Oriole with his lovely warble and of course our state bird, the American Orange breasted Robin, heralding spring. (Her nests make me smile as they are rather messy but soundly mud-packed. I have a collection of various bird nests in my potting shed – just can’t bear to throw them out!) The Indigo Bunting is electrifying with his vibrant shocking iridescent blue! Throughout summer, the precious Hummingbird and the colorful Rose Breasted Grosbeak who is in the Cardinal family. Blue Jays are pretty, but they tend to be bossy and can scare the others away. Also, we enjoy the Hairy, Downy and Red Headed Woodpeckers. The winter birds – the Juncos, the Tufted Titmouse, The Nuthatches and of course, Mr. and Mrs. Cardinal cheer us up on a winter day. But above all, my Most Very Favorite is the sweet little Black Capped Chickadee – so friendly! Thank you for all your efforts in 4 years of blogging. What joy it brings to so many and of course the Potting Shed efforts are my ultimate favorite! The Pottery Barn store is 45 minutes from me, but I’d LOVE to make the trip! Thanks! First and foremost, Happy Anniversary! I really enjoy all of your beautiful posts with such amazing attention to detail and of course your precious Bichons!! I happen to be in love with a sweet little Bichon, ChaCha, at this very moment and of course, always carry my love of Brutus, Portia, Elvis and Teddy in my heart. As you well know, Bichons are some of the sweetest dogs ever! Yet I digress… back on task… I’ll have to go with the male Cardinal, in all his red glory, as my favorite little feathered friend. It reminds me of my sweet grandmother. She loved them and always had them proudly perched in her Christmas tree. Sadly we lost my grandmother in 2011, just a week after her 102nd birthday, but I like to think every time I see a Cardinal, it’s her way of sending hugs and kisses and it always leaves me smiling with a full heart. Thank you for such a generous giveaway and although Pottery Barn has so many pretties, I think Amazon is always a handy gift card to have around for a variety of wants and needs! I love seeing the cardinals at the feeding station…we have several pairs if them. They are quite easy to spot dressed in bright red…even the females are a pretty distinct rust color with the red topknot.

I haven’t put up a feeder since moving to this house, but alwAys loved the Chickadees that would come at my last home. I already follow you by e-mail because I love your photography!
First, I would like to tell you I LOVE your bird vignette. Fortunately, it doesn’t remind me of the movie Birds, which scarred me for many years. The bird I’m looking forward to seeing most is a Robin, because that would mean spring is here, I am tired of the cold, snow, wind, and days like tomorrow which is going to have a high temperature for the day of -16 degrees! Yuck!

We had to get rid of our feeders as they were attracting more raccoons than birds, but I love to see mourning doves. They are so beautiful to me.

I love love love all your posts and aspire to have a shed as wonderful as yours some day. All the birds at my feeder provide entertainment and peaceful viewing, and I get to be an armchair referree to calm the squabbling over position! :) I like all the birds but the plump junco is probably my fav. (OK, so I really do not care for the food-hogs: red wing blackbirds and cowbirds.)
Well, at our house here in town the cardinals are always welcomed. Where our future home will be in the country we have eagles that sit in the trees behind the garage. They are breathtaking!

I enjoy all the birds we see at our feeders: woodpeckers, doves( have to have flat space), cardinals, chickadees, wrens, sparrows, robins,and more.. But what I love the most is watching the birds bathe in the birdbath. They loved the heater I put in it in the winter. I did not know they bathed in the winter but thought they would like to drink the water.. But, they enjoyed splashing about in the bath and I loved watching! Pottery Barn is one of my fav stores!! So many delightful goodies!!
