Are you ready for Thanksgiving? I have an easy and casual centerpiece that you can put together for your table at the last-minute with items from the grocery store!
I assembled a harvest centerpiece for Thanksgiving using a rustic wooden box / caddy that I had. You can use any kind of wooden box, crate, basket or tray to build your centerpiece. You can find some inspiration for creating easy tray centerpieces, here.
I started with some kale which is affordable at 99 cents for a large bunch. Kale makes a great filler to soften and tuck in around edges of your container and provide a base for your arrangement.
Start with some veggies, mini pumpkins and/or gourds and flowers that you can harvest from the grocery store.
I placed water in jars (or you can use glasses) to add some $3 mums from the grocery store in the arrangement.
Artichokes provide some texture and green color to pair with gourds and mini pumpkins.
Our maple tree peaked this past week. I’ve been saving leaves in a zip top bag in the refrigerator to preserve their color and keep them fresh for Thanksgiving.
The leaves will stay fresh a week or longer in sealed bag in the refrigerator.
You can use squash, pomegranates, apples, pears, persimmons or whatever says “harvest” to you, along with the flowers of your choice to build your centerpiece.

Hi Mary, Kale is such a great idea to use as filler! My maple dropped all its beautiful leaves at once yesterday due to a snowfall. They are all on the ground and I think I will gather a stack to keep in the fridge as you suggest. I had no idea they would keep well like that. Thank-you for this tutorial on the construction of a splendid centerpiece. The step by step photos make it look attainable for the craft challenged(me)! I also appreciate the clever way to keep the colored leaves fresh, I’ve never heard this before. Our leaves are somewhat damaged by the gypsy moth caterpillars- yuck! I used some of the same items in a silver bowl on my dining room table last year but love your arrangement in the wooden caddy. I have a wooden basket for my garden tools but now think it should be elevated to centerpiece status. Beautiful!! One year I collected leaves on a trip to Missouri. Saved them in a ziploc bag for one year and used them again. They we’re still pretty.
