Never underestimate the power of your backyard to help pollinators!

Whether it’s tending a window box of flowers, a patio container of tomatoes,

or planting shrubs or trees, you’re nurturing plants that absorb carbon dioxide

as well as air pollutants, which in turn, produce clean oxygen that we all need to breathe.

Your garden can provide a safe haven for bees, butterflies, birds as well as

other pollinators who play crucial roles in maintaining the local ecosystem.

Many pollinator populations are in decline attributed to a loss in feeding and nesting habitats.

Somewhere between 75% and 95% of all flowering plants on earth need help with pollination.

Pollinators provide pollination services to over 180,000 different plant species

and more than 1200 crops.

That means we have pollinators to thank for one out of every three bites of food we eat.

Pollinators are also responsible for half of the world’s oils, fibers and raw materials.

Most pollinators (about 200,000 species) are beneficial insects such as bees,

beetles, wasps, ants, butterflies, moths, and flies.

About 1,000 of all pollinators are vertebrates such as birds, bats, and small mammals.

In addition to the food that we eat, pollinators support healthy ecosystems that clean the air,

stabilize soils, protect from severe weather, and support other wildlife.

Bee Kind 🐝 Find out what you can do to help pollinators #garden #flowers #earthday #diy #craft pollinators ©homeiswheretheboatis.net

🐝 Bee Kind to Pollinators:

🐝 Reduce or eliminate the use of pesticides. If you must use them, use the most selective and least toxic ones and apply them at night when most pollinators aren’t active.

🐝 Plant in clusters to create a “target” for pollinators to find.

🐝 Plant for continuous bloom throughout the growing season from spring to fall.

🐝 Select a site that has shelter from wind (by trees and shrubs), has at least partial sun, and can provide water.

🐝 Allow material from dead branches and logs remain as nesting sites; reduce mulch to allow patches of bare ground for ground-nesting bees to utilize; consider installing wood nesting blocks for wood-nesting natives.

🐝 Support farmers and beekeepers by buying local honey and locally produced organic foods.

Happy Earth Day, Mary! A great post! No hummers in my area just yet. I’ve barely got flowers blooming other than my lilac (full!), and overwintered pansies. With a rain shower yesterday, I walked the garden and spotted single blooms on a peony, salvia, rose, bottle brush, wegeila, and bud on an iris and poppy. i was doing a happy dance. Spring came later this year for us, but it’s allowed me a more leisurely approach to tasks.
I like your linked posts and recommended products. The shepherd’s hook with 9 prongs looks like a great, sturdy choice!
It’s true….every day is earth day for gardeners! 💚💛🩷

Hummers have passed through our lowcountry area for about a month. I think we finally have some that will stay here in Beaufort South Carolina.

Mary, no wonder I love everything with bees!!
I want to plant areas for the bees and butterflies and now I know what to plant!
We’ve had hummingbirds for the last few weeks. Not sure if they are just passing through or my regulars! But they sure seem hungry. So much fun to watch. We have one feeder right out the kitchen window seat. It’s a favorite place for us to be and watch the hummingbirds.
    Great Earth Day post!

Happy Earth Day, Mary! There are some wonderful projects here. I do plant pollinators every year, but I seem to see fewer and fewer of them, which is really quite shocking

Happy Earth Day, Mary. Thank you for all the wonderful info to benefit our important pollinators. No hummers in our garden, but Butch had a ruby throat almost land on him while hiking our woodlands. It seems they pass through early. We are behind on planting annuals and it is raining today and possibly all week. We need the rain. Wishing you a wonderful day 🐝🌸💕🐝

Happy Earth Day, Mary, as I am sitting outside enjoying the beautiful day and watching the birds and white butterflies. Thank you for all your tips and sources. My local Wild Birds Unlimited said that hummingbirds have been sighted. I tried for three years to attract them, but no luck. Enjoy your week as you get your gardening therapy. 💐

Happy Earth Day! It’s been beautiful here of late and a welcomed rain this evening. I love this time of year, being outside seeing up close the changes that spring brings. It makes me think of my mother and grandmother out digging in the dirt. They were real gardeners, serious ones who spent hours dedicated most mornings to working outside. I don’t pretend I’m anywhere near their dedication. I love watching the butterflies, birds, geckos, etc and puttering in my gardens. It’s relaxing! I also love seeing your garden activities and things around the garden shed. You are an inspiration!
