My surplus of Halloween PEEPS®

have been haunting me. . .

so I decided some Brownie S’mores

would be a timely treat. . .

The three main ingredients for s’mores are graham crackers, marshmallows, and chocolate.

These Brownie S’mores have a graham cracker crust, fudgy brownie layer and are topped with marshmallow Peeps, in this case, ghosts…BOO!

This Halloween treat is easy to scare up using your favorite boxed brownie mix!

Here are the ingredients you need for the graham cracker crust:

👻1 stick of unsalted butter, melted

👻 1 1/2 cups crushed graham cracker crumbs

👻 2 tablespoons sugar

👻 Pinch of salt

Press the crumb mixture evenly over the bottom of a well-buttered 8 x 8 pan. . .the scarily perfect size for *3 rows of 4 marshmallow ghosts.

Bake crust 10 minutes at 350 degrees.

*Update: Peeps have shrunk in size since I posted this recipe and will take more Peeps than 12 to cover brownies, probably 15 – 16.

Mix up your brownies according to the box directions.

Pour your brownie batter on top of the graham cracker crust and bake according to recipe/ box mix directions.

I added a layer of chocolate chips on top of the brownies during the last 5 minutes of baking time

to help the marshmallow spooks stick to the brownies.

Place your PEEPS® Ghosts on top your chocolate chip/brownie layer and broil very briefly~ don’t walk away~ or the results will be frightening ;)

I experimented with the placement of the oven rack under the broiler.  After several attempts it became apparent the hand-stamped sugared faces didn’t stand a ghost of chance and melted immediately, so I added mini chocolate chips when they came out of the oven to create the nose & eyes.

Alternatively use a culinary / butane torch to toast the marshmallows. You could also skip the chocolate chip layer and use the frosting of your choice to adhere your marshmallow Peeps to the top of the brownies.

Ghost Peeps Brownie S’mores

Prep Time10 minutes
Cook Time38 minutes
Total Time48 minutes
Course: Dessert
Cuisine: American
Keyword: Ghost Peeps, Halloween Brownies, s'mores
Servings: 16

Equipment

  • 8 x 8 pan

Ingredients

  • 1 box brownie mix not family size + ingredients called for on box
  • 1 stick of unsalted butter melted
  • 1 1/2 cups crushed graham cracker crumbs
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • Pinch salt
  • 1 cup regular size chocolate chips
  • Mini chocolate chips 3 per Ghost Peeps face
  • Ghost Peeps to cover top of brownies 15 – 16

Instructions

  • Mix graham cracker crumbs, sugar, salt and melted butter.
  • Press the crumb mixture evenly over the bottom of a well-buttered 8 x 8 pan.
  • Bake crust 10 minutes at 350 degrees.
  • Remove from oven, mix brownies according to box directions.
  • Pour brownie batter on top of the graham cracker crust and bake according to recipe/mix directions.
  • During last 5 minutes of baking time, add a layer of chocolate chips on top of brownies.
  • Remove from oven, place Ghost Peeps on top of chocolate chips. Set oven to broil.
  • Watch Peeps carefully so they don’t burn. When brown, remove from oven and place mini chocolate chips for eyes and nose on ghost faces.

Notes

  • Peeps have shrunk in size since I posted this recipe and will take more Peeps than 12 to cover brownies, probably 15 – 16.
  • I experimented with the placement of the oven rack under the broiler.  After several attempts it became apparent the hand-stamped sugared faces on the Peeps didn’t stand a ghost of chance 😊  and melted immediately, so I added mini chocolate chips to replace the nose & eyes.
  • Glass pans bake more quickly than metal and retain heat longer. As a general rule, if you use a glass pan rather than metal, you need to decrease the oven temperature by about 25 degrees to ensure that your brownies don’t bake too quickly and burn.
  • Melted chocolate chips are added so Peeps adhere to the brownies. Alternatively, skip the chocolate chips and add a layer of frosting to brownies. Add Peeps on top of frosted layer and use a culinary torch to toast marshmallow Peeps or return to oven to broil.

An average 5.5 million Peeps are made every day, adding up to 2 billion Peeps a year —

enough to circle the Earth three times!

Their long shelf life make them ideal for Hot Cocoa!

Hi, Mary. These are sooo cute! But I’m in love with the lettering on your lids…how did you do those? Are they stickers? They look raised–yes? Thanks!

    • October 27, 2011 at 11:49 am

Hi Zuni~ Yes they are raised stickers I found in the scrapbook section at Michaels. They’re by “making memores” and the style is “spellbound”. I used them for my Broom Parking sign on my Witches’ Brew post :)

LOVE the individual jars…how would u bake these or did u bake them and then just scoop them into the jars ready to eat?
        Please advise!!

      • August 18, 2015 at 2:42 pm

Spray your jars with nonstick spray, add your graham cracker layer and then brownie batter. Baking time will depend on your jar size and how much batter you use, so bake until a toothpick comes out clean. The chocolate chips go on top of the baked brownie when the brownies are almost done and back in the oven long enough for them to melt and give the Peep something to hold on to. Happy Haunting!

I just found your blot and I love it! These Halloween ideas are great!! For the individual s’mores in a jar, do you simply cut the first recipe down to 1/12th? Are there instructions to give to the recipient for finishing and baking? I think this would be a cute idea to give to my Bible Study group in October :) Thanks for the creative inspiration!!

Not sure this went through yesterday. When you make up the 4oz jars, is everything made? or do you just put in ingredients? Thanks!! Love them!

    • October 1, 2012 at 1:16 pm

The brownies with graham cracker crust is already baked with a layer of chocolate chips added the last 5 minutes of baking time. Add a peep to the top after the jars come out of the oven!

Are the brownies with the crust actually baked in the individual jars and then topped with the peeps? how many jars (4 oz) can you get from one box of brownies and how long is the baking time?

How did you make the four ounce canning jar recipe? Is it made just like the 8×8 recipe? It looks uncooked with the chocolate chips on top of he graham later. For giving as gifts ness wondering. Thank you!! Ilove the ideas!!

    • September 28, 2013 at 7:10 pm

Yes, just like regular brownies. It’s a smaller portion so cook until done. The chocolate chips were not melted for the photo. They go on top of the cooked brownie and back in the oven long enough for them to melt and give the Peep something to hold on to.

Yes they should be fine reheated for your kids! Happy Haunting :)
