A Fall Table with Woodland Friends and DIY Table Runner

September is just a few days away which means we’re closer to autumn’s arrival and my favorite season!

I’m counting down the days until fall, anxious for autumnal hues, a harvest of pumpkins, warm plaid layers, and cozy meals with the flavors of fall on the menu!

In celebration, I’m at the table as part of a Fall Tablescape Blog Hop this week! You can find more fall inspiration and autumn tables from this talented group of bloggers at the end of this post.

For this is an early fall table, I harvested materials for an easy and natural table runner. Endless summer hydrangeas have faded and dried to a papery texture, joining green oak leaves and clippings from the shrubs, faux fall leaves, wooden acorns, grapevine pumpkins and mercury glass votives.

They’re placed down the center of the table, allowing the colors and textures to blend and transition from summer to fall for a casual and organic table runner.

This is an easy method to add a little nature and interest to the table, and one you can use to assemble a runner in less than 10 minutes once you’ve gathered your materials.

Let me introduce you to some woodland friends that have joined me at the table in anticipation of fall’s arrival. . .

Daisy the Fox is ready for fall, dressed for the season and adorned with a plaid ribbon, leaves and acorns.

Chloe the Jack Rabbit hopped to the table. . .

Her whiskers are twitching in anticipation of an abundant autumn.

And last but not least, Mazey the Squirrel is foraging for acorns. . .

And perched on a pumpkin, awaiting fall’s arrival!

Amber goblets are waiting to be filled with Apple Cider Sangria, an easy seasonal cocktail using fresh apple cider. . .

Ideal for tailgating or sipping, just because it’s fall!

Place settings are layered to add color and texture starting with a linen textured tablecloth as a foundation for the table. Pumpkin-colored hemstitch napkins are placed on the diagonal for accent and color, framing natural jute placemats.

And a farmhouse plaid napkin is paired with a butterscotch yellow twill, topped with an acorn branch napkin ring. Bone handled flatware provides some added texture and warmth to the table.

Thank you to Chloe of Celebrate & Decorate for organizing this Fall Tablescape Blog Hop!

Mary, your creative flair never ceases to amaze me. No one but you would think to name the cute woodland animals on your plates. Great layers of texture and autumn colors and patterns. My favorite item is your pumpkin colored hemstitched linen napkins place on the diagonal framing your jute placemats. Plaid napkins with acorn leaf napkin rings pull everything together as does your creative organic table runner.

Mary, you are such a master at tablescaping! Your details are simply unsurpassed of any I’ve ever seen. I’m a little late to the Mud Pie party, but found it in abundance in Naples and picked up a couple things. Love it, and I love your table. I’m looking forward to fall too.

Come on FALL!!! We are ready in Louisiana and your blog today certainly is encouraging that it will arrive soon. Along with fall, always come football, and your table would be one to duplicate on a smaller scale for a tailgate party…not only are the pictures spectacular, but your words used in describing what you have done are also top notch and add so much interest. They always tell a brief story…many thanks again…:)

The woodland creatures are irresistible Mary, and I can almost see them frolicking among the leaves and fall things down the center of your table! I love these bountiful centerpieces you do, running the length of the table, they are so pretty and every place has a view. The dried hydrangeas and grapevine pumpkins are wonderful with the soft autumn colors you’ve chosen for the napkins and place settings. Fabulous Fall! Happy Hopping~

Good morning Mary. At first, I was a little surprised at seeing your fall tablescape. Here in Los Angeles, temperatures are soaring well over 100 and we have September coming, the hottest month of the year. But in reflection, taking my mind off the heat and looking forward to cooler days and nights is a wonderful distraction! Thanks for helping taking the edge off the heat!

Mary, your tablescape puts me in the mood for the cozy season. I love how you layered the placemats to echo the layers of fall clothing (the temp dropped today, and I had to find a wrap–lovely!). The plates are so cute, and your centerpiece glows with the votives. I am looking forward to seeing the season at your table and she shed. 🍄🍁🍂🌾🌻

  43. August 28, 2017 at 7:30 pm

I remeber when you first did a natural runner like this and I copied it immediately! I will do it again this year! The setting is gorgeous and I LOVE those goblets and the flatware! We are having some early fallish weather and I am loving it! High today, 72! Have a beautiful week, Mary!

  44. August 28, 2017 at 8:05 pm

OMG Mary, I love those dishes. And the wooden acorns and the silverware. And the hydrangeas. So pretty. Makes me kind of want fall to get here. Everything is just lovely. Super job.

  45. August 28, 2017 at 8:55 pm

The first thing I thought was, “now i did not see those adorable plates that truly come to life at PB?” then when I saw your source list I see that they are Pier 1 …. they are super adorable and you placed “your friends” on a table of something that they would adore…as they are in their habitat of their woodland forest….As always, you have layered the table with such pretties and create a stunning place where your guest will dine and want to linger because it makes them happy! Cannot believe that September is just around the corner!

  46. August 28, 2017 at 8:55 pm

Your tables are always stunning Mary and this one is no exception. I love those adorable plates from Pier 1. I was almost tempted to buy them… They truly look beautiful on your table. The place mats, napkin rings and centerpiece are also very pretty. You certainly captured autumn’s beautiful color palette. I can’t help but be inspired!!! And may I say, your photography is incredible.

It is a pleasure visiting you and joining you on this fun bloghop.

So enjoyed seeing your beautiful fall tablescape with the terrific colour scheme, fantastic dishes and accessories. My very favourite though is the gorgeous centerpiece – I love how it meanders down the length of the table and creates such a statement. Mixing real with faux florals/greenery is a wonderful trick that really fools the eye and you’ve done it to perfection.

Mary, you always amaze me with the number of gorgeous table settings you create. I have copied many and this one is now on my list as well Would you be so kind to tell me where you found the white dinner and salad plates. I just love the look…seems to go with most everything. Crushing on that flatware! We’re starting to see just a hint of fall color starting here in SE PA and temps have dropped into the low 70’s. I’m loving every minute as we had an unusually hot and humid summer this year.

    • August 29, 2017 at 4:47 pm

Thank you Bobbi! The dinner plates are Mikasa French Countryside and the white chargers are not marked, except for “Portugal” on the back. I found the chargers at HomeGoods several years ago. We’ve enjoyed the same wonderful weather as you have, an anomaly for this time of year and nice change to the 90s!

  52. August 30, 2017 at 11:07 am

Mary, what a lovely tablescape for fall. The plates are darling and I am sure anyone who gets the privilege of sitting there is loving it. You cannot go wrong using those pretty white plates. The fall arrangement is so pretty and those napkins are perfect with this theme. A pleasure to share this tablescape blog hop with you.
