I was intrigued by the slow cooker Crunchy-Sweet Chicken Wings recipe in the poultry chapter.
A perfect and easy recipe for game day and football season.
I made a couple of small changes to the recipe. . . running the wings under the broiler at the end to add a little char, and the addition of some cornstarch to the delicious sauce the wings cook in, to thicken it up for serving.
And there is an alternative and “swap” in the recipe to make these wings with some whiskey (bourbon) if you’re so inclined –> color me inclined ;)
Game Day Slow Cooker Sweet & Sticky Chicken Wings, adapted from Stock the Crock
Ingredients
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 – 1/2 teaspoon pepper
1 1/2 cups honey
3/4 cup reduced sodium soy sauce
1/2 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons canola oil
2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil
2 garlic cloves, minced
3 pounds chicken wings (or drumettes)
2 tablespoons cornstarch
Garnish: toasted sesame seeds, chopped green onion
Spray interior of 5 or 6 quart slow cooker crock with nonstick cooking spray.
In medium size mixing bowl, stir together salt, pepper, honey, soy sauce, ketchup, canola and sesame oils, and minced garlic. Mix well.
Place a layer of wings in the slow cooker crock. Spoon a portion of sauce over the top. Make another layer of wings, staggering them so they don’t directly overlap the first layer. Spoon a portion of sauce over the second layer. Continue with layers topping with sauce until all wings are in cooker.
Cover. Cook on low 3 to 4 hours or on high 1 – 2 hours until chicken is tender. Remove wings and keep warm.
In a small bowl, whisk together cornstarch and 2 tablespoons water. Stir mixture into the slow cooker. Cover and cook on high heat for an additional 10 – 15 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened.
Preheat oven to broil. Place wings on foil lined baking sheet. Broil 3 – 5 minutes or until wings are caramelized and lightly charred.
Serve with sauce and sprinkle with sesame seeds and chopped green onions.
Substitutions: For a flavor boost, substitute 1 1/4 cup maple syrup for honey. Reduce soy sauce to 1/2 cup and add 1/2 cup of whiskey.

I love to make chicken soup and minestrone in the crock pot, but my favorite recipe is turning jarred spaghetti sauce into something fabulous. Just cook it on low all day or overnight. I add a little water (used to get the remaining sauce from the jars and to replace water that will be lost in cooking). I like to use 3 jars with 2-3 lbs. cooked and drained ground beef. The beef could be added later in the cooking. This makes enough sauce to package some in the freezer for later use. I usually buy a sauce with garlic, like Barella Roasted Garlic.
I love my Chicken Taco Slow Cooker Soup! My family loves it with Mexican Cornbread! Mmmm!
Beef Stew!
I love my crock pot, hard to choose one favorite, besed on family and friends favorites it would be close, between Coq au Vin and Pesto Lasagna. Both yummy and so Un crock like.
I have a favorite Chicken Cordon Bleu crock pot recipe that I like to make for company. Crock pots are under-utilized, I think, by me as well!
Looking forward to my first NC birthday since moving here last October…on the 20th!
I recently came across a recipe to cook butternut squash in the crockpot, single ingredient along with a bit of water. I hate cutting up and peeling the squash and this was great way to cook it. Put whole squash in pot with about a cup of water and cook on high for 3 or 4 hours or until fork tender. Remove and cut open when cool, remove seeds and scrape out flesh. Easy peasy!!! No more watery squash and all my fingers are still intact.
Great tip Sherlie! I usually cheat and buy my butternut already cubed at the grocery store. This will help me in the future :)
Apple Butter is great made in my crockpot. Making it is a yearly tradition that my sister and I share.
Today I am going to make some White Chicken Chili in my crockpot. Perfect for a cool rainy day. Will serve with a salad and cornbread. Maybe apple crisp for dessert if I have time. Yummy!

I have referred to my copy of Fix It and Forget It since my children were small! I love the idea of an updated, fresh cookbook! However, I use our crock pot at least once a week this time of year for many soups and stews and would love to try some “non-traditional” recipes! Happy Crocktober to you Mary from Boring, Oregon…another rainy day here and chilly!

Thanks for the fun post & giveaway opportunity, Mary. I use my 6 qt crockpot to make Rebecca Katz’s delicious Magic Mineral Broth!
Happy Crocktober to you, too!
Hi, Mary—I adore all my crockpots (I have 3–a mini for single-serve, my ancient 2-1/2 “country” corning ware one, and my 7 quart…). I use them all the time. I worked for 50 years, and believe me, it was so nice to come home to a meal that was ready to eat, especially on a dark winter night…and it made the house smell homey, too! My current favorite recipe is the French dip that I just made yesterday for my hubby’s lunchtime sandwiches…I serve it on fresh, crusty rolls, and he’s a happy guy!
I make a five-hour beef stew that is so simple, and it uses instant tapioca to thicken it. It’s stew meat, potatoes, carrots, green pepper, onion, the tapioca, and V-8 juice. No browning the meat, either. Put it all in the crockpot, cook on high for five hours or in a 250 degree oven for the same time. No peeking unto it is finished. Stir to mix then serve. I’ve sometimes made a simple loaf of challah bread to go with. It’s a perfect cool weather meal. Add a green salad, and dinner is served.
Hey, if it can be done in a crockpot, count me in! I love easy. THose wings look amazing, and I like the char effect.
What a great giveaway! I love that wing recipe and will have to give it a try. I don’t use my crockpot as much as I like, but I really love using it for cooking beans.

As a young working mother of two busy children I used my crockpot for several meals a week. Now that I am retired I have a nice new large crockpot with more temperate setting and an automatic timer. What I would have given for that years ago, however I still enjoy preparing meals in the crockpot. My favorite recipe is a whole chicken with sliced onions and lemons on the bottom, quartered lemons, onions and garlic in the cavity, with lemon zest, olive oil and fresh parsley rubbed under the skin. It is delicious, my husband loves it and the aroma is mouth watering.
I have so many favorites it’s hard to choose just one! An easy simple one is ranch mushrooms. It’s usually a big hit at potlucks.
I love making apple pie cake with extra cinnamon in my slow cooker this time of the year.
My favorite has to be my Autumn Minestrone Soup!
I love putting something in the crock pot and having the rest of the day free. Mississippi Pot Roast is a current favorite.
I make a stew from a recipe from my mother. I always feel a connection to her when I make it
Spit pea and ham soup. But would love to try those wings as well.

My favorite go-to slow cooker recipe is “chicken stew.” It is so easy to make, all it calls for is chicken breast, potatoes, carrots, spices, chicken broth and onions. So simple, but so delicious. I always make it on a cool fall day and it is perfect, easy clean up at night.
We love waking up to a crockpot breakfast – put on the night before, and ready to eat when we wake up (eggs, hash browns, cheese, onion, bacon/sausage or ham, salt, pepper. When ready to eat, top with sour cream, salsa, green onions or avocado).

This sounds like the bible of slow cooking Mary! I love that it provides so much versatility in the recipes. I have been turning to my slow cooker more and more often as my energy at the end of the day is always dwindling, and knowing dinner is done is such a great feeling! I have seen a slow cook creme brulee that I am anxious to try. Right now it’s hard to pick a favorite, but the biscuit bubble up I made a few weeks ago will be made and variations over and over. Hard to believe so many things can be cooked in one! Great giveaway!
