Happy Monday and Hello October!

It’s one of my favorite days of the month, when I join my

Fall is my favorite season and my favorite color is October!

In addition to her color, I’m ready for October’s corn mazes, pumpkin patches,

harvest of fall flavorshayrides and Halloween!

Our common theme for this October’s edition of Monday Morning Blooms was ‘Harvest Hues’.

I’m celebrating October’s arrival with a floral arrangement and harvest of pumpkins, Indian corn, and hydrangea blooms that have gone through their fall metamorphosis, turning rosy shades of pink.

Choosing the Vessel

To create my centerpiece, I started with a favorite urn I’ve had for over 20 years. While my urn has a decorative fruit border, the details are lost when it’s filled with floral material. Use the container or vase of your choice to provide an anchor for a seasonal arrangement that allows the flowers and foliage to shine.

I highly recommend this Pillow Floral Cage Arranger which is my new go-to eco-friendly flower arranging tool!

Pillow cage floral arranger, a go-to eco-friendly flower arranging tool!

It works like chicken wire without the sharp edges, and is made of durable plastic so it doesn’t rust.

The 6-inch size nestles into my urn without tape, but you can use waterproof floral tape to secure it for flower arranging as needed. It’s also available in a 4-inch size.

For additional support, especially for longer branches in this larger arrangement, I placed a heavy metal cage flower frog at the bottom of the urn. You can often find these metal flower frogs along with pin frogs at antique malls for around $10.

Prepping the Flowers and Foliage

Next, I filled the urn with room-temperature water and mixed in flower food / floral preservative to help extend the life of the blooms.

Flower longevity tips:

🍂 Harvest early: Cut flowers and foliage in the early morning while they’re fully hydrated and not stressed by the heat.

🍂 Cut smart: Trim stems at a 45-degree angle for maximum water uptake. Remove any leaves that will sit below the water line.

🍂 Condition first: Place freshly cut stems in a clean bucket of water with floral preservative and allow them to rest at least for 4 hours, or preferably overnight, before arranging. This helps prevent wilting and drooping of foliage and stems.

Tip: remove the outer layer of woody stems to help them 'drink' and stay fresh longer #flowerarranging ©homeiswheretheboatis.net

🍂 Woody stems: For branches with woody stems, remove 3–4 inches of the outer bark with a vegetable peeler. This helps them “drink” better and stay fresh longer.

🍂 Although the hydrangeas are at their drying stage, keeping them in water with preservative will help them hold their color longer.

Building the Arrangement

For this centerpiece, I used:

🍂 Limelight Hydrangeas, at their fall stage

🍂 Abelia branches for structure

🍂 Burning bush (Euonymus alatus) for fiery red accents

🍂 Seed pods from crape myrtle and chaste tree (Vitex) for texture

Steps:

🍂 Begin with the longest abelia branches to create a framework and shape.

🍂 Add burning bush branches for structure and color.

🍂 Tuck in hydrangeas next, building fullness and covering the mechanics of the floral cage.

🍂 Finish with seed pods for depth, texture, and seasonal interest.

Adding Harvest Details

To ground the urn, I set it in the center of a grapevine wreath. To enhance the autumn feel, I layered Indian corn, pumpkins, and nandina berries snipped from the shrubs that are just turning color, along with bits of foliage.

A colorful plaid fringed throw echoes the colors of the season and ties the centerpiece together.

Good morning Mary! Your floral arrangement of limelight hydrangeas in their autumn stage, abelia branches, fiery burning bush, and seed pods is stunning! The urn is a beauty and ideal for the arrangement. The autumnal plaid throw is a lovely foundation for the rolling out of pumpkins of all shapes, sizes, and colors. I have never met a pumpkin that I didn’t like. Can you ever have too many pumpkins, I am asking for a friend?!

It is always a delight to join you for floral inspiration and Monday Morning Blooms. Enjoy every moment of our favorite season 🧡🎃💛🍁

Fantastically fall arrangement, Mary! I really love the throw at the base of your arrangment and how it immediately picks up the color of your hydrangea blooms! I’m just about ready to dig my macrophylllias out and replace with something less needy in these drought-filled summers. Even my panicles look crispy. Your arrangement and vignette certainly deliver all the vibes of the best of fall.

Oh, my goodness! Mary, this is over the top fabulous!!!! I definitely have urn envy and those limelight hydrangeas in their autumn hues are swoon worthy! My oak leaf hydrangeas have long ago turned brown. They never offer this beautiful stage, but they are what thrives in my Texas garden. I don’t complain! I love your mix of pumpkins and the gorgeous throw all center stage on your beautiful stone wall. What a perfect autumn setting. I’ll bee thinking of this vision all day. Thank you! I so enjoy Monday Morning Blooms and always feel honored when asked to join in. Thank you, thank you! Happy October!!!!

Gorgeous arrangements. I thoroughly enjoyed the sentiments and thoughts posted under the photos. It is true that autumn has colors that summer has never seen. Autumn’s crisp air is also refreshing. Thank you for this beautiful post.

I always love your tutorials. We have had such a dry Fall, leaves are just dropping off the bushes and plants despite watering. Sigh…loving the fullness, colors…but then Fall is my favorite time of year. Hugs, from Chicagoland, Sandi

  11. October 6, 2025 at 11:26 am

Mary your arrangement is delightful and I so appreciate your tutorial …I am in desperate need of such info as I grab a bunch of stems and jam them into a vase and call it good when I could take a few more minutes and make a lovely bouquet. I love Autumn also… but I am afraid I am fickle and you will hear me say that about each season as I do love each one for their unique qualities. Here in Florida, we do have seasons but they are not as vibrant as they were in the Midwest where I grew up. I guess that is why I love each season ….memories mostly. Have a great October. 🍁🌻🎃🏈🐿️🍂🍎🦇

Mary your stunning floral arrangement of hydrangeas, abelia branches, seed pods and that fiery burning bush, is a most beautiful way to speak autumn! The pumpkins are a delightful addition, I love each one of them. There’s no such thing as too many, is there?

Breathtaking Mary!! I am a pumpkin lover too, like you said, any color, big or small, smooth or warty, I love them all!! The slowly fading hydrangeas look so pretty “ruling the show” in your garden urn, and the plaid throw brings out the colors of everything so beautifully!
