I had a little Gathering in the Garden inspiration and fun with Shelley Snow’s scarecrow, “May Rain”, dressed in her rain gear, complete with slicker and umbrella. . .

May Rain was something I could identify with since I traded my flip flops for rain boots with our record rainfall this summer!

hydrangeas and buzzing with a bee stake.

The Indoor-Outdoor Picnic section was full of inspiration!

 I brought the indoors, outdoors~

complete with a faux bois rug from inside my Potting Shed.

A recipe for Foggy San Francisco Roll-Ups

was included for this May Rain picnic.

I’m calling them Rainy Day Roll-Ups!

Quick & easy~ good for rain, sun, or fog, everyone has their own version of these tortilla pinwheels.

DSC_4556-001

Rainy Day Roll-Ups

2 cups fresh spinach, washed, drained and chopped fine

3 whole artichoke hearts, drained and chopped fine

2 green onions, chopped (I used some chives instead)

1/3 cup mayonnaise

1 small package (3 oz.) cream cheese softened

1 – 2 teaspoons to taste of ranch-style dressing mix

2 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled (I used several chopped  sundried tomatoes instead)

3 or 4 (6 inch) flour tortillas (I used spinach)

DSC_4551-001

Mix all ingredients together and spread evenly on tortillas. Roll up them up jelly roll fashion. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate 2 to 4 hours. When ready to serve, cut the roll-ups into 1/2 inch slices.

Oh I can see you had LOTS of fun with this book! Such creative little corners, full of interesting items…all tied in beautifully…even the fake wood rug! (I had to look up ” faux bois”) My French is as rusty as that rake.
Speaking of which, using the rake as a stemware holder was very unique & I really loved what you did with all the boots! Too funny!
I hope your fall & winter will be drier than this past summer for you. I noted the flooding in N.C. on this mornings news. Yuck!

I shall request this book from our library, as it looks like it would be full of wonderful inspiration. Thanks for telling us about it.
    fondly,
    Rett

Rainy day roll ups would be perfect here today! So much to take in here, but my favorite is the wine glasses suspended from the rake. You do have all the right props!

  3. September 2, 2013 at 8:01 am

Thanks for the great post. How interesting to see all of the garden elements brought together like this. The garden “people” are a delight to look at. I have to find out how to pin these marvelous characters to my Pinterest board. Every site seems to work differently. I love the seed box loaded up with the Staffordshire china. And most of all I love the charming weathered birdhouses. Great job!

  4. September 2, 2013 at 8:13 am

It’s over the top again Mary! Love it all, but especially the candle holder in the wine bottle and the special urn. Very nice. I will have to try the Rainy Day Roll-ups, ~ sounds yummy. Happy Labor Day. P.S. Will soon be looking for beautiful tomatoes to start canning. Will use my beautiful vintage jars. :)

  5. September 2, 2013 at 8:18 am

What fun you have, Mary, joining the novel bakers. I play vicariously through you and enjoy all your creativity so much. I wish I could be there in person to partake in your lovely picnic of tortilla roll-ups and a sip of wine and meet May Rain and Will Rain. xo

Good morning! Happy Labor Day! Have fun today with your friends and picnic. The book Gathering in the Garden looks like a good read and lots of creative ideas.
Back in Fl. Missing Maine. All good things come to an end😢
Will have to make some of the roll ups. They sound tasty! Yum!

    How Beautiful!

  10. September 2, 2013 at 9:03 am

I love your scare crows – May Rain and Will Rain. They would have been great models for our weather here in August! The rollups look delicious. I hope you have a sunny dry fall.

So happy to have the Novel Bakers back again and this time we are enjoying them at my favorite spot…your potting shed! :)
Your version of May and Will are just adorable. As usual, you did a great job with all the appropriate props for an indoor-outdoor picnic and your gorgeous photography makes it so inviting.

  12. September 2, 2013 at 10:43 am

Ha! Mary I laughed out loud when I saw May Rain! She is totally delightful! From the tips of her garden gloves to the toes of her hydrangea filled boots she dances around the picnic scene~I can almost see her grabbing a glass off of the rake rack and pouring some rose for her and Will! You have certainly created magic from the messy summer rains, and your picnic couldn’t possibly be more enchanting!

  14. September 2, 2013 at 11:02 am

Looks like the perfect spot for a yummy luncheon Mary! Your rainy scarecrows are cute and it looks like the book provided lots of inspiration. Happy Labor Day! Hope it’s a nice one in NC, it’s rainy here in Philly. But you know what they say… A rainy day off from work-is still a good day:@)

  15. September 2, 2013 at 11:27 am

  17. September 2, 2013 at 1:46 pm

oh what an absolutely DELIGHTFUL garden party! i wanted to do a scarecrow too, but to far from home to get it together, this is so adorable i am glad i didn’t even try! i love your touches from the matching trowel with her ensemble, to her farm fresh footwear! its all so cute and quaint, just like this wee book, i adore your new room and family rain, they are indeed the hostesses with the mostesses!

the rack is genius, your urn cupeth running over, their seed hope chest, as in i sure hope it doesn’t ever rain, the bird path serving platter, my goodness its all just beyond adorable, i am loving all your fresh fun details!

thanks for the big smiles today, i thought surely our paths would cross in the tomato field today, can’t wait for more to come!

  18. September 2, 2013 at 2:00 pm

Mary, this book must be full of enchantment. I can’t wait for more from the Novel Bakers. You’ve created the cutest vignette with May and Will. Gotta love those names! The rain boots look like they could be Mary Englebreit. So cute with the hydrangeas. The garden rake wine holder is so clever, and I’m having serious urn envy. What a beauty! Is it old? You don’t miss a beat when you set out to create a post. I keep scrolling up and down taking it all in again and again, smiling at the thought of that frog on a stump and the undeniable fun you must have had putting this all together. Glad the rain stopped so you could take the “indoors outdoors”.
Enjoy the last days of summer! I’m off to order a copy of this charming book. ~ Sarah

  19. September 2, 2013 at 2:09 pm

This vignette had to have been just too much fun to put together!…I can just imagine you buzzing around selecting just the right thing…Charming!

Hi Mary, May Rain is a beauty with her pretty clothes and blooming boots! This sounds like such a fun book. All your floral accents work so well together, from the umbrella to the dishes and seed box. I wonder what your hubby thinks when he sees his waders on a scarecrow? As usual I had a wonderful time clicking on all your links to older posts. I’m looking forward to seeing much more from you and the Novel Bakers! Linda

  35. September 4, 2013 at 1:04 am

What a fun fun post about your gorgeous garden and this book. I love your creativity – always something new and wonderful. Your pinwheels are something like I love to make only mine are a little more Mexican. I want to try yours. The first time I made them was over 20 years ago and my friend introduced me to the recipe – as we made them we sat and ate almost the whole batch! Hogs!!! Your recipe brought back that fun kitchen memory.

Mary, I apologize for being late to the party, though I’ve been waylaid with infected mosquito bites. But listen, tonight I was on my laptop and Bandy was on his, and Dr. Will was on HIS puter (he says hey, but he doesn’t know how to post a comment), and we had so much fun with your lovely post. Now Will wants Minnie Pause to move to his garden. :-) We loved your touches of genius with the rake-wine rack and the urn wine chiller. “We’ve got to do that,” Will said. Joy, joy, I get to buy an urn!
We had the same rain, too. I would look at my iPhone, check the weather, and see the dark sludge of rain moving in your direction, and I knew we were in the same boat: no sun. But thank goodness the sun rose over Carolina, and you enchanted my whole family. We love you.

  37. September 4, 2013 at 7:23 pm

May & Will are just too adorable! I love it. I think I might have to steal the wine glass holder idea. Just perfect! Dianne

    Stay dry, Ginger

  42. September 5, 2013 at 12:12 pm

Oooh….such fun!!! I love every single facet, but my absolute favorite is the garden rake as wine glass holder! WONDERFUL!! UTTERLY FABULOUS!

Oh, what a lovely post! I cannot imagine the effort that went into creating this – it was so worth it to your readers! Like everyone else, I adored the idea of using the rake to hold the stemware. I feel your pain, about the rain this summer. It was crazy in Georgia!!

  44. September 5, 2013 at 3:36 pm

You are so creative! I love this post including the rake to hold the stemware~so cute! Jennifer
