Happy National Lighthouse Day! I’m sharing some lighthouse love along this table from the archives for a little nautical fun in celebration!
National Lighthouse Day is observed on August 7th, honoring the beacon of light that for hundreds of years symbolized safety and security for ships and boats at sea across America’s shorelines.
On August 7, 1789, the United States Congress approved an act for the “establishment and support of Lighthouse, Beacons, Buoys, and Public Piers.” In celebration of the 200th anniversary of the signing of the Act and the commissioning of the first Federal lighthouse, Congress passed a resolution which designated August 7, 1989 as National Lighthouse Day.
It seemed fitting to pull out the Red, White and Blue for a little celebratory nautical fun!
I weighed anchor and set sail at a table with a Tommy Hilfiger navy anchor tablecloth, straw placemats with alternating red and blue stripes, and nautical flatware.
One of the four salad plates has a lighthouse reminiscent of the iconic Portland Head Light, in Cape Elizabeth, Maine that we visited on our Coastal Maine Getaway.
Portland Head Light was first lit on Jan. 10, 1791. Commissioned by George Washington and dedicated by the Marquis de Lafayette. It is Maine’s oldest lighthouse and one of the most visited, painted, and photographed lighthouses in New England.
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was a frequent visitor at Portland Head Light, and friends of the Keepers. It is thought Longfellow’s poem “The Lighthouse” was inspired by his many hours at Portland Head Light.

Pemaquid Point Lighthouse was commissioned in 1827 by President John Quincy Adams and is the lighthouse depicted on the Maine quarter, making it the first lighthouse to be featured on a piece of US currency.

Rockland Harbor Breakwater Light
Walk across the almost mile long granite breakwater that took almost two decades to build, to reach the lighthouse.
Tip: Go at low tide so you’re less likely to get wet walking the granite pier.
The Cape Lookout Lighthouse is a 163-foot high lighthouse on the Southern Outer Banks of North Carolina. It’s painted with directional diamonds~ white diamonds facing east & west, and black diamonds for north & south. It’s one of the few lighthouses that operates during the day with its rotating 1,000-watt beacon flashing every 15 seconds 24 hours a day.
The Cape Hatteras Light is on Hatteras Island in the Outer Banks in the town of Buxton, North Carolina and is part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
Cape Hatteras Light Station was moved in 1999 due to the threat of shoreline erosion.
The lighthouse was moved 2,900 feet in 23 days and now lies 1,500 feet from the seashore, its original distance from the sea.

Love the trip of lighthouses! I have visited the Rockland lighthouse. I walked the mile long granite walkway only to find the lighthouse closed.😔One of my favorite lighthouses is the Ponce Inlet lighthouse in Ponce Inlet,FL. We live only 12 miles from it and frequently take our guests to visit it. I would love winning the dishes! A beautiful table setting it would be prior to visiting the lighthouse! Thank you.
Hi! Buxton Lighthouse was/ is beautiful. The Outer Banks was one of my favorite trips for its beauty, calming, coastal feel. Doesn’t hurt that they serve Apply Uglies at one of the local shops. Warm homemade Apple Fritters like no other we’ve tasted.
Dear Mary, I absolutely love this post! For me, the coast of Maine is magical. Acadia National Park has a few lighthouses, but my favorite is Mount Desert Island – called Bass Harbor Head Light. It sits at the top of a rugged rock shoreline, and although you cannot go inside the lighthouse, it is an iconic view from below. I am a working gal and I live vicariously through your posts because your interests mirror mine. But without the time, nor the exquisite talent that you have, your posts guide me to imitate some of your ideas, if only part way. It gives me insight to what I can do in my retirement! I too have a pontoon boat and I love having dinner parties aboard. Receiving your dishes would not only be another connection to you, but I love sticking with the nautical theme on our vessel. I would love to win this for my dear friend who has a deep passion for lighthouses, she recently retired, she and her husband bought a camper and they recently drove thru parts of Michigan to view many of them, but I am not sure which was her favorite.
Oh, Mary I loved this post as I always do !But ,this one really hit home.We have been to the Cape Hatteras lighthouse on one of our travels.We hope to take a trip out West and stay in a lighthouse on the coast.I am redecorating our bathroom and have decided to go with a lighthouse theme .So far I have ordered 3 shower curtains with no luck.Another one should arrive today !Thank goodness for Amazon ! Beautiful photos and fabulous table, I do love lighthouses. I grew up on Lake Erie and my favorite light house was more of an 🍦 ice cream 🍨 stand than I think it was an actual lighthouse. It is in Bay Village at Huntington Beach. I always thought it was a lighthouse when I was little!!! I would like to take an east coast trip sometime and see some real lighthouses!!

My favorite Lighthouse is the Cana Island Lighthouse located in Door County, Wisocon. You ride in a trailer, pulled by a tractor, over a causeway thriugh Lake Michigan to get to Cana Island! Hi Mary! Great post! We visited Point Cabrillo Lighthouse during a trip up the California coast. It was built after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake to help warn ships carrying lumber to the city away from the coastal shoals. It is on the rocky coastline of Mendocino County.
There were lots of things to do there including tour the restored lighthouse and the Lightkeeper’s Home and Museum. But as a birthday surprise, my husband arranged for us to be a lightkeeper for the night! We stayed overnight in the main lightkeeper’s house and it was so very cool!

There are a few places that I like that are on all sorts of coasts. One of them is Jacksonport, Wisconsin in the Door County Peninsula. Gorgeous area especially as the leaves change in the Fall.
My favorite lighthouse is Split Rock Lighthouse at Two Harbors, Minnesota on Lake Superior.

Hi Mary, I enjoyed your history of the lighthouses today. My favorite lighthouse is Cape Hatteras as we vacationed for nine years in Rodanthe when our children were small. Consequently we saw the lighthouse on numerous occasions. However, as you mentioned the lighthouse was moved since we visited it. So many happy memories.

There is no doubt that Maine is the place to go to satisfy one’s thirst for lighthouses. My husband and I took a trip up the coast of Maine last summer, visiting as many lighthouses as we possibly could. One of my favorites was Owl’s Head, perched out on a granite outcropping high above the Atlantic.

I spent many years of my youth in Delray Beach , Florida and that town and beach has a special place in my heart ! As a transplant to the beautiful state of North Carolina, I have visited The Cape Lookout light house and consider that to be my favorite !

Love the light houses, I lived dow the street from the West Chop lighthouse on Martha’s Vineyard and would walk to it daily. Just a note , the lighthouses in New England are painted white! Interesting as you go south, you get into stripes and other colors of lighthouses.
Fantastic post this morning. Just love lighthouses. The Outer Banks was a vacation spot for my family from the time i was five years old. Hatteras Lighthouse was the first my little legs could climb and has always been a favorite but my parents eventually built in Corolla where The Corolla Lighthouse can be seen from the deck so that one has to be my favorite and the one my grandchildren climbed for the first time. We sold the house last year which has a stained glass window of the Corolla Light and lots of Lighthouse decor. Since we love sailing I would be thrilled to be the winner of the “By the Sea” set. Love them all and one day I would love to visit Maine to see all the unique lighthouses you’ve just shown us and hope to see a whale also. My favorite is our Fort Gratiot Lighthouse that guards the mouth of the Great Lake Huron. I don’t like heights, but did climb her which was quite an experience. However, I did not go out on the catwalk, ha, the climb up was enough for me and what a view! I even have a similar picture of the winding stairs posted above, great minds think alike! Hi Mary, My precious son was the Lighthouse lover. He collected them from all over and unfortunately we lost him last April. He got to visit many of them when he travel up and down the southern coast. He wanted his ashes to be spread at sea at a lighthouse. We miss him so very much and I know he would have loved your gorgeous table. He always told me that he wanted to go to Cape Cod for the lighthouse es but he never got the chance. I have only been to coast in the Deep South. One day I hope to be able to go up the coast of Maine. However, I have visited the light house in St. Augustine, Florida which is beautiful.
These are so beautiful! I especially love the Portland lighthouse. My friend loves lighthouses and she recently lost her husband who shared her love for them. She and their children still visit Cape Hateras every year to visit as it was his favorite place. She needs these dishes.

I have actually never been to the coast, so I would love to see ANY of these fascinating lighthouses! With those pretty dishes, it would be easy to pretend….
Michigan has so many wonderful lighthouses and I love to see them all, but I think my favorite is Pointe Betsie in Frankfort, Michigan.
As we live on the west coast, my favorite seaside town is Yachats, on the central Oregon Coast. The nearest/most favorite lighthouse is Heceta Head just south of there. However, I must mention that we were lucky to spend a week in Cape Elizabeth several years ago and loved exploring the coast of Maine as well as taking a short trip to Boston. We took a cruise to Nova Scotia and went on a an excursion to Peggy’s Cove. Absolutely beautiful lighthouse and community. I live in Jersey and we have quite a few here but that one by far was my favorite.

I actually live in a small community called “lighthouse landings” because of a small lighthouse that guards a high spot on the lake we live on. It makes me smile everyday

We have 11 lighthouses on the Oregon Coast. 7 are open to the public & most are still active. There are 2 privately built lighthouses both of which are certified by the US Coastguard as official private aides to navigation. One of my favorites is Tillamook Rock Lighthouse which is built on a rocky island 1.2 miles offshore of Tillamook head. It is not open to the public but is so picturesque and sports a beautiful view with the waves crashing along the shore. We also have two lighthouses in our neighboring state of Washington. The mouth of the Columbia River across from Astoria is such an important shipping lane and covers such a huge area that 2 lighthouses were built. North Head Lighthouse was built to warn ships arriving from the north after the older Cape Disappointment Lighthouse was found to lack in warning ships approaching from that direction. You have inspired me Mary – one of our future road trips with be down the Oregon Coast to visit all the different lighthouses. Our coast house is in Astoria on the northern tip of Oregon so we will start with the two Washington lighthouse on the Columbia river and work our way down from there. Once again, love your table setting, your beautiful photos, and the history and tutorial is such an added bonus. Wait, there are two future road trips – I would like to check out the East coast lighthouse as well! Thank you Mary!
Mackinaw island we love it there actually going for my 32 Anniversary in 2 weeks
Ballycotton lighthouse sits on an island out at sea near our beautiful clifftop village of Ballycotton in East Cork on south coast of Ireland. We do tours daily during summer season. ( see our website http://www.ballycottonseaadventures….). Its a stunning very special we would say magical place. We have welcomed many lighthouse enthusiasts from all parts of USA to our lighthouse. If your readers are ever in Cork Ireland check us out you will get a very warm Irish welcome.
Only been to Maine once and we stayed at Kennebunkport. Lovely! Saw a couple of lighthouses on that trip.
We like the light house at Boca Grande..It is our fave place to go and hangout..
My favorite lighthouse is the one in Pensacola, FL on the Naval Air Station where you can climb to the top and watch the Blue Angels fly. It is an incredible experience.

My favorite Lighthouse is Kilauea Lighthouse on the island of Kauai, Hawaii where we celebrated an anniversary and my 50th birthday. It is also a wildlife refuge which is operated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Many protected species of Hawaiian seabirds roam the grounds. It is a beautiful lookout point for seeing sea turtles and humpback whales. This lighthouse definitely holds a special place in my heart!
I would love to give my 80 year old sister the gift. I am a native of North Carolina and she still lives there and has fallen in love with the Cape Hatteras lighthouse . For each birthday and Christmas I search for cards with lighthouses on them to send her. Thank you so much for giving us this chance.
One of my favorite coastal towns to visit is Galveston,Texas! I remember going there as a child, and then again after my husband and I got married. As far as lighthouses, I would love to go see Cape Hatteras one day. I would really love to win the nautical dishes! My mother in law collects lighthouses, and I would gift them to her. I grew up on the Great Lake Erie – north coast of Ohio. We have two lighthouses – one Marblehead and they (finally) brought back the old lighthouse they removed earlier to Port Clinton on the main water road, Perry Street.

We went on a cruise to Canada and Maine, and we visited the Portland Head Light on Cape Elizabeth. Mid August, we will be taking a bus trip to N.C. Outer Banks,, and I think we will see several lighthouses on that trip. I also visited a small light house (Brown’s Point) in Tacoma, WA and the small park around it was absolutely charming. While on the Outer Banks trip I hope to find some neat items for a tablescape. Thank you for all your inspiration.
Being from the Midwest my favorite lighthouse is in Door Co., WI. The Cana Island Lighthouse is a majestic beacon that is slowly and lovingly being restored to its original beauty. Today they are celebrating what they have accomplished so far with a fete on the island to celebrate National Lighthouse Day. Years ago when the lake was down you could walk across the rocky causeway to the island. Now you have to take a wagon ride across the causeway. They recently had to buy a tractor with higher/bigger tires to make it through the water safely! We have many beautiful photos of our favorite light!!

My all-time favorite coastal town is Savannah/Tybee Island for it’s shopping, non-stop food venues, warm water beach, and historical architecture. I’m submitting a runner up West coast location of Laguna Beach as it is an artist haven.

Cape Lookout in North Carolina. I live in county where it’s located and it was my late husbands’ Favorite Place. Explore Fort Macon in Atlantic Beach NC. So much history!
My favorite lighthouse is Hatteras. It is the tallest and to me the most stately lighthouse of all. It is so beautiful especially at night.
I love the history you told along with the pictures of your post celebrating National Lighthouse Day. I like both the Rockland Breakwater Light because I am intrigued with the mile long walkway to the lighthouse and the Cape Lookout lighthouse because of its height and the directional diamonds painted on its sides.

Since lighthouses are my favorite passion I pinned almost all of them to Pinterest. Even though I love the lighthouses of my home state of North Carolina, the Portland Head lighthouse is still my favorite. Thank you for sharing this wonderful collection.

I live in centeral SD and never been close to an ocean or great lake to even see one lighthouse let along have a favorite. But it’s on my bucket list!
One of the most fascinating lighthouses I have seen is Cockspur Island Lighthouse on the Georgia coast below Savannah. Unfortunately, you cannot walk or drive to it; it can only be accessed by water. It was completed in 1839 as a day marker and a light was added in 1848. It is part of Fort Pulaski National Monument.
As a Wyoming girl,we love going to the ocean and Portland Headlight is our favorite Lighthouse. We were just there again in June. Love this post and all your wonderful lighthouse pictures!

I’ve never visited any lighthouses, but my favorite coastal town is Port Aransas, Texas.
My favorite lighthouse is the Ocracoke Lighthouse in Ocracoke, NC. never knew there was a special day celebrating lighthouses! I love just walking around in Ocracoke village-the shops are fun and the British graveyard there is a special place.

I have two favorite lighthouses in North Carolina. We lived on Oak Island for ten years so the Oak Island Light is one of them. Also I camped for many years on Cape Hatteras so that is also a favorite. Look forward to your blog every day.

My favorite lighthouse is the Ponce de Leon Inlet Light in Central Florida. It is 175 feet tall and is not only the tallest lighthouse in the state but also one of the tallest in the country. I have taken all three of my kids (now adults) there at various times through the years for school field trips or just for fun. And yes, I have walked all the stairs to the top!

Been to the top several times. Live in Ohio. We too have light houses on Lake Erie. I have only been to Marblehead.

Mary, Since I just live up the road from you in Clemmons in Forsyth County, I have to say that my favorite lighthouse(s) are those found in NC. We have been to Currituck, Oracoke, Hatteras, Bodie, and Lookout. And when I taught 8th grade, my room had lots of lighthouses and one really great poster print I made of Cape Hatteras on my honeymoon! (It now hangs in my stairway which has a lighthouse theme). As a (not born but raised) Houstonian for 20 years we spent weekends in Galveston, TX. Fast-forward to living in NJ for over 30 years it is amazing that this tiny state has 18 lighthouses and 11 are open to the public. Sandy Hook is the oldest operating lighthouse in the USA!!! It has been in operation since 1764 and is part of the fabulous Gateway National Recreation Park. I love this area. I have your blog bookmarked (but not subscribed to) and tune in each week to see your wonderful tablescapes. They are inspiring. Thanks so much for sharing your creativity!
My favorite lighthouse is at First Landing National Park VA because it is the first lighthouse in USA and I was fortunate enough to visit there in July 2019 with my daughter and grandson we climbed up to the top it is on military base and the history is so impressive. If you haven’t been there it is one you would want to put on your list as must visit
My favorite coastal town to visit is Boca Grande in SW Florida.. at one time I did have a pic of their lighthouse but can not locate it. I have so enjoyed your blog today with coastal tablescape and lighthouse pics.

Mary, your post as usual is stunning! I use to live in Coronado, California and when friends and relatives came to town we loved to take them to the Point Loma Lighthouse located on Point Loma peninsula at the mouth of San Diego Bay in San Diego California. It is located on the military base at the southern tip of Sunset Cliffs National Park. On November 15, 1855, the light keeper climbed the winding stairs, and lit the light for the first time, until March 23, 1891 the light was extinguished. The National Park Service has refurbished the interior to its 1880’s appearance. From the lighthouse you are able to see most of San Diego, Coronado Island and the airport. Worth the trip!!!

I adore lighthouses and think I will do a watercolor from your stunning photo of Cape Hatteras. Can’t say that I have a favorite since I live in New Mexico and don’t often get to visit them. Poor me! Don’t enter me in the giveaway as I have way too many dishes already.
My favorite coastal town is easy to give, that’s St. Michael’s, Maryland. Ever since visiting the location as a child of about 10 or 11 I COMPLETELY fell in love. Unfortunately in those days it usually wasn’t in the budget when traveling around with my family for us all to go to the expensive restaurants or even go and get a big bushel of crabs to eat (we caught our own which I’m sure my brother and dad liked better but not me) and any time we were anywhere close to the place I always wanted to go and at least walk around town. If I didn’t look so MUCH like my dad’s side of the family at times (most of the time usually and they would say the same thing) I would swear I was adopted. Somehow this seaside, ocean, beach, lighthouse, water loving female ended up in a family where everyone else has little use for all of that and would far more visit the mountains and all that good stuff. I love those things too, but they don’t compare to the coastal world for me. So when I FINALLY became a REAL grownup, out of college, dating and with my own job and at least a little money what is one of the first things I do, go to St. Michael’s and here it is almost 40 years later and its still the same. However now I CAN sit down in the Crab Claw for a big seafood meal (if I didn’t now have to eat gluten free) but at least I got 20 or so years in. It has always been and always will be one of my very favorite places on earth and while I adore almost any coastal or “water town” out there, I guess the childhood memories will always make it something unique in my heart. This was where I was able to go in my first lighthouse. My second guest room (even though I live 4 hours from the ocean) is in lighthouses. I never knew there was such a thing as National Lighthouse Day (I SHOULD have know though, they have it for every other bizarre thing in the world) until I read it on this site.
Annapolis, Maryland is a beautiful and historical town to visit – a favorite of ours since my husband graduated from the US Naval Academy! Thomas Point lighthouse in an unusual lighthouse in the Chesapeake Bay near Annapolis. Thanks for a beautiful post.
