When winter brings snow, ice, and gray days, the birds remind us to slow down and find joy in the season. From easy DIY bird feeders and cozy winter nesting décor to whimsical tables and tea-time treats, this winter birding roundup celebrates the simple pleasures of feeding, watching, and decorating with our feathered friends.

Winter can feel long and challenging, especially with days navigating with snow-covered landscapes, icy conditions, and even power outages. But in quieter moments, if you’re able to pause and look outside, there’s often a small bright spot unfolding right beyond the window. . .feathered visitors bringing life, movement, and comfort to the season.

Winter is for the birds.
Cold weather brings feathered visitors closer to home, turning backyards, porches, and garden edges into front-row seats for winter birding. Whether they’re clinging to feeders, flitting through bare branches, or showing off against a snowy backdrop, birds add movement, color, and joy to even the frostiest days.

Over the years, my love of winter birding has inspired many cozy projects, whimsical tables, and simple DIYs. This post gathers them together as a little winter nesting guide. . .for both birds and humans.

Feed Your Feathered Friends: Easy Winter Birding DIY Feeders
One of the simplest ways to enjoy winter birding is by feeding the birds—and turning it into a creative project makes it even more fun.

A longtime favorite is a Birdseed Wreath Feeder, made using a Bundt pan. It’s a cheerful, functional feeder that looks charming hanging from a tree, bench or shepherd’s hook.

Pinecone feeders are an easy and affordable option, especially for birds that love to cling while feeding, like chickadees and nuthatches.

Peanut butter contains beneficial fat and protein for winter months and cornmeal contains fat, fiber, iron, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and folate, that support bird health through winter.

For snowy afternoons or days spent indoors, creating an Edible Birdhouse turns feeding birds into a hands-on winter activity. . .perfect for kids or anyone feeling crafty. These birdseed “bed and breakfasts” not only have charm but are reusable!

Once the seed is gone, simply recoat and hang again. They’re a budget-friendly alternative to pricey seeded feeders found in catalogs and online.

And because winter crafting should never be too serious, Birdseed Owl Treats add a touch of whimsy. These owl-shaped feeders are a hoot to make and bring personality to your winter bird buffet!

Cozy Winter Nesting: Bird-Inspired Decor Indoors and Out
Winter birding doesn’t stop at the feeder. It often sneaks indoors as inspiration for seasonal décor.

One of my favorite ways to embrace winter is by extending the twinkle season with a Winter Nesting Tree. Decorated with bird ornaments, glittery nests, snowflakes, icy branches, pinecones, and soft white ribbon, this bird-themed tree brings warmth and sparkle to January and February—those months that can feel especially long and gray. Turning on the lights morning and evening feels like a gentle reminder to slow down and nest.

Bird inspiration has also fluttered onto the table over the years, with a Winter White Table with Orchids.

Embrace winter with a tablescape that leans into soft textures, neutral palettes, and natural elements, creating calm, inviting spaces that echo the quiet beauty of the season outdoors.

American Goldfinches were the guests of honor at a Snowy Day Table for the Birds. . . a fun outdoor setting to observe from the window.

If you feed them they will come!

Whimsy, Warmth, and a Little Bird Love
Birds have a way of showing up not just in winter décor, but in celebrations too.

Love Birds’ Bed & Breakfast was a playful nod to love birds and whimsical Valentine’s Day vignette in The Potting Shed.

It serves as a reminder to surround yourself with things you love, not just on Valentine’s Day, but every day. Winter is a perfect time for that kind of gentle joy.

Birds have even inspired creativity, like painted macarons transformed into edible art for a feathered-friends tea party.☕🐦

From cookie to canvas, painting macarons with gel food coloring and edible ink food markers,
is a fun way to add personality to winter gatherings or for handmade gifts!

And for the ultimate cozy moment, nothing beats a Winter Nesting Tea where you’ll find a DIY tea cozy and treat yourself to a warm chai latte and Almond Sugar Dove Cookies.

These sugar cookies take flight from flavorful almond extract and are topped with a layer of sweet almond buttercream. Sliced almonds, along with finely chopped walnuts, mimic feathers. You could have even have an interactive tea party where everyone decorates their own cookies to enjoy and take home!

Crafting Cozy: Wreaths, Owls, and Handmade Touches

Winter crafting goes hand-in-hand with nesting. An easy finger-knitted winter wreath can be made in about an hour and adds soft texture and warmth to your home.

Pair it with DIY Owl Ornaments, for whimsical winter décor that carries from door to mantel.

For another easy winter craft, air-dry clay ornaments are a simple way to bring birds, owls, and natural elements indoors. Made with basic molds, these snowy owls and sparkling nest ornaments are perfect for winter decorating. They add handmade charm to trees, wreaths or winter vignettes.

These simple projects are reminders that winter doesn’t have to be dull—it can be creative, cozy, and just a little bit whimsical.

Why Winter Really Is for the Birds
Winter birding invites us to slow down, notice small moments, and find beauty in unexpected places. Whether you’re feeding birds in the snow, crafting something cozy indoors, or setting a table inspired by feathered friends, birds have a way of connecting us to nature—even when it’s cold outside.

I don’t even know where to begin to comment on this post. There are so many wonderful ideas here. I have saved the recipe for the almond cookies because I love everything almond. I was also enchanted by your outdoor table setting. It never would have occurred to me to do that, but I certainly could have because I have a small round table for two out on the deck, currently covered in snow, and it would’ve been fun to set. As always, thanks for all of the amazingly wonderful ideas.
Mary, I love the cardinals. I love the cardinal legend that a visit form a cardinal is a visit form a love one who is no longer here.
Thanks for a good Friday morning memory
Not only a feast for the birds, but a feast for the eyes!
Just so wonderful and beautiful to read and see the beauty of the bird world, we are so blessed.
Mary, love it all! Cardinals are my favorite bird and I enjoy watching all the birds at our feeders. Thanks for the instructions on making different kinds of feeders. A great indoor project! The clay ornaments are so pretty too. I have to try those!
Hope you and your doggies stay warm!
Mary, this is a wonderful post! I love birds! We’ve been feeding them during this extreme weather. We have enjoyed watching them fly in and dine. Stay safe! We (and NC) have another round of extreme cold tonight through the weekend. We haven’t been able to leave the house because the secondary roads are iced over and won’t be plowed. That’s okay because I am getting caught up on a few projects. Clara ❤️
Love your winter nesting tea table! Fun and festive. The dove cookies are so cute and look yummy!
Sweet Mary,,,,,even in the darkness of winter….you find and bring joy! Thankyou.
Watching our flock of gold finches under, on, etc our feeders…hubs is filling twice a day!!!
Course, yemps are in teens & 5 inches of “Marzipan” over 6 inches snow…franki
Good morning, Mary. I so appreciate when your post gathers previous DIYs, etc into one. Especially if I may have missed or forgotten one (or more). Thank you once again for sharing the information and your talent with each of us! Stay warm and safe. It is frigid here but not as bad as some other parts of the country.
My sister feeds the birds. I sent her the bundt pan feeder wreath. The squirrels will love it LOL.
Your bird-themed posts are always a big fav and this one does not disappoint! What gorgeous photos and GREAT ideas to care for our feathered friends as we have these deadly low temps and big big snow covered world. Thank you, Mary!!!
Your outdoor feeding table is so cute! Love looking at all the ideas for feeding. I got a birdhouse with camera for Christmas and love watching them all!

This post made my heart flutter, Mary, as I’m all about our feathered friends. Thank you for so many wonderful ideas for you provide “gentle joy”. The outdoor table set for the birds was such a cute idea with their own tiered tray and birdseed filled goblets. I see so many projects I’d like to do. Have a safe weekend and enjoy your winter tree and watching the birds from indoors. 😘
Mary, you bring such joy with each and every post! I’m in awe of all of these wonderful projects and yummy treat ideas. We had a few days of above freeing temps and some nice sunshine, but the cold returns tonights. My garden is a mess, but it gives me motivation to make a few changes. I’m making some notes and plans for spring.
Stay warm and cozy. Your birds are lucky1
We have had ice and/or snow the past two weekends. My husband has braved the frigid temperatures to make sure each of our feeders is full. The birds are grateful and we enjoy watching them dine on their favorite seed mix. Thank you for sharing ideas for taking care of our feathered friends.
Love the feathered friends projects and tablescapes. The birds really enjoy those tasty treats. Love the sweet owls. 🦉 it is always fun to sit back and watch the sweet little feathered friends. My hummingbirds are here year round and provide me with entertainment.
