There are some flowers that simply radiate happiness, and for me, nothing says late summer quite like a bouquet of sunflowers.

Their cheerful golden faces seem to bottle up sunshine, making them the perfect blooms for August when gardens are beginning to transition toward fall but still have plenty of summer spirit left to share.

August Monday Morning Blooms: Fleur du Soleil—Sunflower Joy from the Potting Shed

For this month’s Monday Morning Blooms, I’m taking you back inside my Potting Shed where one of my favorite treasures is blooming. . . a least on the outside :) A vintage French watering can that proudly bears the words Fleur du Soleil or Flower of the Sun.

As much as I love growing flowers in the garden, sometimes the grocery store flower bucket offers exactly the pick-me-up I’m looking for.

A few bunches of sunflowers are an inexpensive way to brighten a room, porch, or garden shed, and they pair beautifully with vintage garden pieces and rustic containers.

A Flower with a Sunny Personality

It’s easy to see why sunflowers have become one of the world’s happiest flowers.

Native to North America, they’re more than just beautiful blooms, they’re also an important food source for birds, bees, butterflies, and people. The seeds nourish wildlife throughout fall and winter, while the large nectar-rich flower heads attract countless pollinators during summer.

Sunflowers have long symbolized:

• Happiness
• Adoration
• Loyalty
• Optimism
• Longevity
• Warmth

They’re truly nature’s smile.

Did You Know?

One of my favorite sunflower facts is that young sunflower buds actually follow the sun across the sky during the day—a process called heliotropism.

As the plants mature and the flower heads fully open, they stop tracking the sun and usually settle facing east. Scientists believe east-facing blooms warm more quickly in the morning, making them especially attractive to early pollinators like bees.

Here’s an interesting tidbit: *Bee*cause east-facing flowers warm up quicker, they attract five times as many pollinators as west-facing flowers! 

Another fascinating fact?

What looks like one giant flower is actually made up of hundreds—sometimes thousands—of tiny individual flowers packed together in the center disk. Each one can produce its own seed after pollination.

Arranging Sunflowers

Sunflowers are wonderfully easy to arrange because they naturally become the stars of the show.

For this arrangement, I simply tucked several stems into a pitcher and mason jar

 and let their oversized blooms do all the work. Their bold yellow petals needed very little accompaniment beyond a little greenery.

My Favorite Tips for Longer-Lasting Sunflowers

Whenever I bring home fresh sunflowers, I follow the same routine that helps them stay beautiful for close to a week or even longer.

• Give each stem a fresh cut at a 45-degree angle before placing it in water.
• Remove any foliage that would sit below the water line.
• Use clean, cool water with floral preservative.
• Change the water every couple of days.
• Recut the stems each time you refresh the water.
• Keep arrangements away from direct afternoon sun, heating vents, and ripening fruit, which releases ethylene gas that speeds aging.
• If a bloom begins shedding petals, don’t discard it right away—the beautiful center disk and green bracts add wonderful texture to an arrangement.

Potting Shed Sunshine

My vintage French watering can has become one of those decorating pieces I reach for year after year. . .  it always reminds me that the simplest garden treasures often become our favorites.

Surrounded by sunflower dishes, weathered garden tools, and shelves filled with well-loved flower pots, it brings a little corner of sunshine into the Potting Shed—even on cloudy days.

And isn’t that one of the greatest gifts flowers give us? They brighten not only our homes, but our hearts.
