These Easy No-Sew Ribbon Acorns come together in just minutes and are a fun and whimsical way to add a touch of fall to your home.

Have you seen these velvet acorns that are all over the web and on Pinterest? You can purchase velvet acorns on Etsy in an assortment of 6 – 8 for $15 (or more). The tutorials I’ve seen to make them involve using a needle and thread to stitch up circle of fabric and then filling them with fiberfill.

I wanted a quick no-sew way to assemble these little acorns and came up with one that anyone can do. They’re fast and fun to make and come together in just minutes once you have all your supplies together!

First you’ll need acorn caps. . .

If you have a mature oak tree in your yard, you know the ground is littered with acorns in the fall. I had a bag of acorn caps that I collected and squirreled-away to make my No-Carve Pumpkin Owls.  If you don’t have any oak trees in your yard, you can probably find them taking a walk along a neighborhood greenway or park. . .I get a kick out of finding the double ones.

If foraging for acorns like a squirrel doesn’t have any appeal ;) you can buy acorn caps on Etsy for this project.

I stopped in Dollar Tree and picked up some mini rubber bands (found with the hair care supplies) and a bag of cotton balls.

Then I went shopping for ribbon. I chose some 2 1/2-inch ribbon to make these acorns. I found a colorful fall plaid at Michaels and velvet and leopard print ribbon at Hobby Lobby. All fall ribbon at both Michaels and Hobby Lobby is on sale right now. Download Hobby Lobby’s mobile app to your smart phone so you have access to their weekly 40% coupon to save on their other ribbon when you shop.

I started by cutting 2 1/2-inch squares of ribbon. Take a cotton ball and place it in the center of your square. Depending on the size of your acorn cap, you may need to pinch off some of the cotton to make the filling smaller.

Use a mini rubber band to secure your ribbon, bundling it around the cotton ball. Trim off the excess ribbon at the top with a pair of scissors, so the acorn cap will fit, and trying it on for size as they can vary.

Use a hot glue gun and place some glue on the inside of the acorn cap to glue your ribbon bundle.  ‘A little dab’ll do ya’ as you don’t want to have any excess glue running down the cap onto your ribbon or burning your fingers.

Use a toothpick to help to tuck the rubber banded top up in the cap into the hot glue if needed.

Here are my assistants Sophie and Lola. . .

Sophie would love to get her puppy lips on an acorn or two and Lola is sleeping on the job.🐾🐾 They both agree that it doesn’t feel very fall-like with our 90 degree temps and Mother Nature needs to get her act together!

These little acorns are a fun project to embrace fall when it still feels like summer outside! They come together quickly if you work in an assembly line fashion, cutting your squares, rubber banding the cotton / trimming the tops, and then gluing the caps on. They would make a fun little takeaway or favor for Thanksgiving or Friendsgiving!

These are the cutest & sweetest things I’ve seen in quite some time! I’d given up crafting since my kids left grade school many years ago, but now I may need to start again because I’m ‘nuts’ for these acorns! Weather here in Ohio is perfect for early fall- sunny & mid 70 degree temps.☀️🍂🍁

Mary, this is such a fun and easy project. Your ribbon choices are perfect. I plan to make some of the acorns to adorn boxes of leaf cookies that I am giving to family and friends. Thank you, as always, for sharing!

Mary! How precious these are! Maybe we could add a little Fall scent to the cotton as well or add a handful to top a bowl of Autumn Potpourri for texture…

Thanks for reviving our creative nature!

Mary, I’m not crafty in the least, but I do think I could make these. Yours look beautiful with your choice of ribbons. A few of these would look fun scattered among my velvet pumpkins or just in a bowl as you’ve done. Thanks for sharing this excelent tutorial!

Even though it doesn’t feel like Fall here, Mary, I have seen acorns in my neighborhood. Your little new-sew project is just adorable. I love the ribbons that you chose, too. You’re so sweet to share your ideas with us, and your assistants are too cute!! 🍁😍🍂

Very cute and doable, too! I’ll pick up some acorn caps while walking the dogs. It’s in the 70s here in my part of New England, which is certainly more fall-like than your 90-plus degrees. I hope your weather soon cools down to something more appropriate to this time of year. Thanks so much for sharing your creativity.

This is such a cute idea for a craft project. The oak tree in our yard is a willow oak so no acorn caps. I just may have to search around town for a traditional oak tree and make off with some caps. There are lots of short pieces of ribbon in a drawer which would be perfect for this project. Thanks again Mary for your unique ideas.

In my part of the country (Indiana), I have what seems like millions of acorns! I’ve started collecting them. I too love the doubles! I use the actual acorns and paint them with gold or silver glitter craft paint. They look so cute sprinkled on the table now thru Thanksgiving!
