🌸 Monday Morning Blooms: A Garden-Inspired May Table with Peonies & Roses

There’s something magical about May . . .gardens are waking up, peonies are beginning their much-anticipated show, and the table practically sets itself with blooms gathered straight from the yard.

Peony season is one of my favorite times of year, and I couldn’t resist bringing their soft, ruffled beauty to the table.

This month’s Monday Morning Blooms is all about celebrating the beauty of the season with a lush arrangement and a table dressed in beloved botanicals, ideal for spring or celebrating Mother’s Day!

🌿 Building the Arrangement: Eco-Friendly Mechanics

Flower arranging mechanics using waterproof floral tape and flower frog for easy arranging ©homeiswheretheboatis.net

I typically reach for chicken wire as my preferred eco-friendly alternative to floral foam, but this time I didn’t have a piece large enough for my bowl. Instead, I created a support system using clear waterproof floral tape in a grid pattern across the top of my bowl, along with a vintage flower frog to anchor the stems at the bottom.

Oasis Clear Floral Tape - 1/4 inch w x 60 yard roll

Tip: Waterproof tape is designed to hold when wet, but it won’t adhere to an already wet surface. Be sure to apply your tape to a dry vessel before adding water to your container.

My flower frog was a wonderful vintage find—a combination pin and cage style I picked up at a favorite antique mall for $15. Vintage frogs are nice and heavy, making them ideal for stabilizing arrangements. I placed a silicone bowl cover underneath to protect the interior of my bowl from scratches.

Optional but recommended: A Lazy Susan Turntable for flower arranging is especially handy for heavy vases or arrangements.

🌼 Conditioning Your Flowers for Longevity

To keep blooms looking their best:

  • Cut flowers and foliage early in the morning when they’re fully hydrated
  • Trim stems at a 45-degree angle for maximum water uptake
  • Remove any leaves that would fall below the water line
  • Place stems in a clean bucket of water with flower food/preservative
  • Allow flowers and foliage to condition, preferably overnight, or for a minimum of 4 hours, to prevent drooping or wilting of your stems.

🌷 The Floral Ingredients

This arrangement is a joyful mix of:

  • Garden roses (a sweet gift from my bestie 💕)
  • PeoniesSarah Bernhardt and Festiva Maxima in all their ruffled glory
  • Kaleidoscope abelia for soft, variegated greenery
  • Japanese privet, which grows wild here in the South
  • Hosta leaves

Japanese Privet blooms here in early May.

While privet is considered invasive, it does have a lovely sweet fragrance and the bees absolutely adore it! 🐝©homeiswheretheboatis.net

How to create a Peony and Rose Centerpiece for a Spring or May Table ©homeiswheretheboatis.net

I started by creating a base with greenery, added airy stems of privet for movement, and then tucked in roses and peonies to complete the arrangement. Three hosta leaves were added last along the edge of the bowl.

🌸 My Go-To Flower Care Favorites

Two products I always rely on for long-lasting blooms:

If you haven’t tried Crowning Glory, I highly recommend it! It dries clear and is safe to use on all flower types and works wonders, especially on thirsty blooms like hydrangeas. It typically dries within 30 minutes to an hour, depending on heat and humidity.

🍽️ Setting the Table: A Garden in Bloom

My table is dressed in one of my longtime favorites—Portmeirion Botanic Garden dinnerware. I’ve been collecting pieces for over 25 years, and it never fails to bring a fresh-from-the-garden feel indoors.

First introduced in 1972 and designed by Susan Williams-Ellis, this iconic pattern was inspired by early 19th-century botanical illustrations. The mix of floral motifs paired with its signature green leaf border is timeless and cheerful—perfect for spring and summer tables.

In addition to beautiful botanical designs, I love the butterflies and bees on the dinnerware. 🐝🦋

🌼 A Little May Inspiration

Good morning Mary! Your May garden-inspired table of peonies, roses, and butterfly details is a lovely way to start my day. May is my favorite month of spring as the garden awakens and the peonies are at their best. Their blooms are fleeting so we do enjoy them while we can. You always explain how you make your gorgeous floral arrangements in a way that anyone can understand. Your tips are stellar! I love Portmeirion’s Botanic Garden. Its garden theme is perfect for any season. You have so many beautiful pieces. I only have dinner and salad plates. Butterfly accents add lovely finishing touches to your garden table. I don’t remember seeing the wine glasses, but they are beautiful!

It is always a treat to join you for Monday Morning Blooms and flower therapy. Happy May my friend 🩷

Beautiful May Monday Morning Blooms, Mary! I have gotten in the habit now of preserving my peonies for longer bouquet bloom times (😉). It worked great last year, so I’m doing it again this year. Your blooms are magical.

    • May 5, 2026 at 1:07 pm

Thank you for your visit Rita! I’ve heard it works great, but I’ve always worried about sacrificing those buds on the same stem that are still in the “marble” stage. Do you just not worry about that? 🌸

Mary, happy first Monday of May! Your garden blooms are a feast for my eyes. I’m envious of each of you who can grow peonies. I’m eagerly awaiting peony blooms at our local stores. Your collection of botanical dishes and stemware make a beautiful tabletop garden. How fun to have a long history of collecting these pieces.
Thanks for sharing all the floral beauty. Happy Month of May!

Mary! I am so grateful for your wonderful and helpful tips on flower arranging. Your finished bouquets always look charming…I have to admit, I am envious of your talent AND your flowers. I have exotics that those up north are envious of …but as usual, I want the peonies, lilacs, iris, spirea, tulips, hydrangeas, daffodils, forsythia and all those lovelies that can not grow here in the deep Southwest of Florida. Enjoy your flowers and your week.🥰🦋👒

A beautiful MMB post! The linens, plates, glasses and napkin rings are all so colorful and mimic real flowers so nicely. I enjoyed cutting a few peonies this year and hope next year they will be a bit more prolific. It took several years to get one bloom so I was thrilled to get 3 this year! It’s amazing how exciting it is to count just a few blooms after babying them for several years. I hope you get a bit of rain. We all need it! Enjoy your week. Clara❤️

    • May 5, 2026 at 8:00 am

Such a beautiful table Mary, and those flowers are gorgeous! I bet they smell heavenly. Nothing is in bloom here yet so it’s really nice to enjoy vicariously. The Portmeirion Botanic Garden line is lovely, and your collection is so pretty. I see the dishes in our HomeSense (your Home Goods) from time to time and have picked up a few pieces but I’ve never seen the wine glasses – they are darling. I do hope you get some rain soon for your hydrangeas🌺🌼. Happy Thursday!
