Dogs’ Lives Are Too Short

“Dogs’ lives are too short. Their only fault, really.”

We said goodbye to Gracie a couple of weeks ago. While she had begun to seem a little feeble, it took us by surprise.

With heavy hearts, we made the decision to let her go as we discovered her kidneys were failing.

dsc_0621-1

Gracie would have been 14 in May, she was Chloe’s sidekick, who we lost a year ago in February.

They were two peas in a pod. 🐾🐾

So many fond memories of Gracie are tied to Chloe, that it seems like losing Chloe all over again.

With Gracie gone, we are thankful to have Lola to love and keep us busy. She will be a year old in May.

“Dogs come into our lives to teach us about love, they depart to teach us about loss. A new dog never replaces an old dog – it merely expands the heart.”

– Erica Jong

Having a dog will bless you with many of the happiest days of your life, and one of the worst days.

“Petting, scratching, and cuddling a dog could be as soothing to the mind and heart as deep meditation and almost as good for the soul as prayer.” – Dean Koontz

“A dog has one aim in life. . . to bestow his heart.”

― J. R. Ackerley

Thank you Gracie for some of our happiest days and bestowing your heart.🐾

If the kindest souls were rewarded with the longest lives, dogs would outlive us all.

Gracie, 2005 – 2019

“Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.”

~Roger Caras

Thank you for your visit.

I am so sorry for your loss. Your posts about Chloe, Gracie and Lola have always touched my heart. I believe that Chloe and Gracie have reunited at the rainbow bridge. May you feel peace in knowing that she is not suffering.

So so sorry to hear this news. She was a joy! Lost my Westie in July and I am still missing her. Working from home she was my side kick too.

  9. March 27, 2019 at 7:11 am

Oh, so sorry to hear that. I loved the memorial you put together for them. I always enjoyed seeing their pics. I am glad that Lola is there to help bridge the gap. I think that is the absolute worse thing about having a dog. They don’t live long enough.

I am so sorry for your loss, Grace was a star attraction and looked as if character just oozed from her. Little dogs leave very big holes in your heart.

We lost our dog, Annie, of 10 years on Sat March 23. Annie was a blonde Cairn Terrier. You said very eloquently what I am feeling. She was loved and will be greatly missed. We have her half brother, Ozzie, and that is helpful. Like your Gracie she had health issues we could not heal. She lost use of her back legs almost 2 years ago. While she adjusted to her disability and we always included her on outings she could not chase squirrels and play with her brother like she used to. I take comfort knowing she can now run and chase squirrels and bark to her hearts content. We took her in vacation to Bryson City,
NC last fall and had a great time. She loved life as did your Gracie and lived it to the fullest of her capabilities. My sympathy to you and your family.

Loved all the quotes, and that flower arrangement that looks just like her is precious! May your hearts heal and may peace fill your souls knowing you will meet again at Rainbow bridge. Xo ❤️

I am so sorry you’ve again lost one of the sweetest souls in your life. What lovely memories of Gracie (and Chloe) you have in your heart and in these pictures. What perfect loves they were.

I frequently forward your sweet puppy posts to my daughter. But I’m saving this post, simply because one day I know my daughter will need it; her love, family, and support is her fur baby whom we love dearly. Until he came into our lives seven years ago, I never realized how deeply the loss would be dreaded.

This morning’s post has truly brought me to tears. Having two Bichon babies myself, I can truly relate. I remember the loss of your precious Chloe last year, and can only imagine what you are feeling once again. Our Bichons are also in their senior years, and we embrace each and every day we have with them. I can’t imagine a life without their little paws prancing around the house. Your words were beautiful, and I know that little Lola is already bringing a great deal of warmth, comfort, and love to your lives. Your posts that featured your pups always put a smile on my face. I hope that your memories of them will bring you more happiness than sadness. Again, My thoughts are with you.

I’m so sorry Gracie’s kidneys were failing… even making the hardest decision and doing the right thing never eases our heart. We had to make this decision on New Year’s Eve for our 10 yr old Jeter. Chloe was waiting to greet her, and they are together again – playing and loving one another. When someone shares they have just said the last goodby to a beloved canine, it just takes you back to all the great canine souls that have been in your own life.
    Truly sorry for your loss.
Wise decision to bring Lola into your lives.

I know your heart is broken….She was so incredibly lucky to have you and you her. Know that the two of you will meet again at the Rainbow Bridge in heaven. My thoughts are with you and your broken heart. You bring so much joy to so many of us…and we all long to comfort you at this time of loss. Many take the passing of an animal lightly…Yet they are like our children and an incredibly loyal companion. Know that the warmth and love of all of your followers is with you today.

I had a pair of beagles, brother and sister, and lost them within a year of each other. It’s very, very hard, it is like losing them all over again. They were such buddies and so sweet, it just broke my heart. I found this plaque on line that sums it up for me “It came to me that every time I lose a dog they take a piece of my heart with them, and every new dog who comes into my life gifts me with a piece of their heart. If I live long enough all the components of my heart will be dog, and I will become as generous and loving as the are.” Anonymous. I have had dogs all my life. I know the pain of losing them, and the joy and tears in remembering. I am sorry for your loss.

  105. March 27, 2019 at 10:02 am

Oh, no. I am so sorry Mary. I think your dogs may have been the original reason I started reading your blog. I always looked forward to seeing them in your photos. And then of course I came for the potting shed :). I’ll keep your family in my prayers!

Hi Mary…Ive followed you for awhile now…I’m in Toronto Ontario and I never comment. I admire from afar. But this post brought me to tears. I’m sooo very sorry for the loss of your precious Gracie (and Chloe earlier)!! So very sad. Our pets are beautiful, precious angels who dance into our hearts…I’ve had dogs my whole life…loved them more than a lot people truth be told. My firefighter husband died 4 years ago and my son was in first tear final exams in university at the time and just totally and utterly devastated him. The road back has been a challenge to say the least, and I bought a service dog a Havanese my son named “Cash” after Johnny Cash. Best thing I ever did…best buddies who love and need each other and Cash has been that lifeline that got my son through very sad days. Gracie and Chloe are always with you and forever in your heart and dreams. Bless them both. Hugs from Canada. Take care. Liz 🐶

Oh no! I can’t believe this. I’m so sorry to hear that you lost your precious Gracie. Nothing hurts like the loss of a pet. So many people say “it’s only a dog/cat”. They have obviously not been touched by the love of a pet. There is nothing in the world like that unconditional love. I hope you find some comfort in the knowledge that she had the most wonderful life any dog could possibly have, with you. She was, and always will be adored. Mary I am in shock to read this and so so sad for you and your husband. I have not been following you for too long, but long enough to know that it was not that long ago you lost Chloe. I am sending prayers for peace. THIS is the way we show our final act of love, to let them go tho we do not ever want to. Nancy Tillmon a children’s author wrote a gorgeous book called The Heaven of Animals. In it she says “when angels whisper in our pets ear, it is your voice they hear”. This line has brought me much comfort at times like these and when I think of all of the dogs we have lost or let go because it was time. I hope you will read it and that it will bring you some comfort too. I truly believe all of my dogs are waiting for me in Heaven. Sending hugs.

Oh Mary, I am so sorry for your loss, she will be missed. I love seeing those sweet faces and bundles of fur on your blog. In fact, that was one of the biggest draws to your site when I first started following you! We lost one this year rather sudden and her side kick is lost without her. I want to share one more quote, “It came to me that every time I lose a dog, they take a piece of my heart with them, and every new dog who comes into my life, gifts me with a piece of their heart. Mary, I am so very sorry to hear of this loss..at first I thought it was a tribute to Chole..but then I realized the worst…I’m writing this with a heavy heart and tearful eyes…you must be so sad..I know how we felt losing our 16 year old Tootsie but you are very brave getting anther little one like Lola. I/we hesitate because we don’t want to experience that loss again….I admire your courage…dogs are just an extension of our children…I have no more words other than..sorry!! ❤️😢❤️😢❤️😢🙏🏻

So sorry for your loss. Its heartwrenching to lose a beloved pet. We lost our lab after 14 years as well. They leave such a mark on our hearts. Your memories will keep her alive in your heart.

  196. March 27, 2019 at 9:48 pm

We always remember the day they came into our lives as puppies – how they chewed everything, cuddled and played with us. Now a year since we lost Pepper, not a day passes without fond memories. I too shared your pictures with my grandchildren and even adopted some of the treats and holiday ideas from your blog. In our 70’s now, we’ve made the decision not to have another because no one could treat them with as much love as we would. You have sweet Lola – give her more hugs and treasure the time you have.

Oh, Mary, I feel sick to my stomach! As soon as I read your blog title I felt my stomach go into a big knot. To loose Gracie so close to Chloe’ s passing is awful! I’m so sorry for you, your hubby and little Miss Lola. 😢 Too, too sad. You will all be in my prayers and I will miss Gracie’s sweet little self and those precious eyes. Loved all of the darling pictures of Gracie, the quotes and beautiful sunset, it is an awesome tribute to her and speaks of your great love for her. Precious! I will really miss her! ♥️🐾🐶♥️

Mary, I am so sorry for your loss of Gracie. My heart is sadden. Your quote is so right…their lives are too short. It is so heart breaking to lose a fur baby because their love for you is REAL. I’m crying typing this because I have lost precious fur babies too. Praying for you. Hugs

    Mary,

My thoughts are with you. We had to make the painful decision 2 weeks ago to let go of our beloved 18 year old yellow lab. Your tribute was lovely, and the quotes quite comforting. We have both been blessed to have the kindest of souls in our lives. May that thought help you to remember the good days and bring you peace.

Mary I am so very sorry. My heart hurts for you, having recently lost my grand-dog. My son lost his Best Friend, his lab at 12 yrs young in Jan. My heart broke for him. And a year ago we lost one of our Yorkie boys, also unexpected. Their companionship and unconditional love that they give to you is so deep in your heart. I know my other Yorkie guy of 14 will probably be with us for just a a little while longer, I hold on to him every day. And I look forward to being a new Grandma to another little Lab who will be arriving in April. And though he will never replace our loving Sam, he will start his own loving journey with us. ❣️🐾

I am sorry you have had to say fare the well to your precious best friend, your part of your heart..
When I said goodbye to my Mike, I thought my heart would never love again. But here I sit, years later , now with 4 dogs AND 2 cats, and this was a surprise to me. But my heart still grows and it still holds dear those that passed before. There isn’t a greater thing a human can accomplish than to love and be loved. May your heart be blessed with comfort and lots of love

I understand your loss. Our Bichon was 16 and when we lost her. It was so hard for my whole family. My son was in Navy Officer training and we Skyped with him in our last hour with our Krystal. Seeing these photos made my smile. I saved a few images to do on my IPad puzzle app. It makes me happy to see other Bichon owners with their babies. I delete them after I do the puzzles. I hope that’s OK…..the app lets you do jigsaw puzzles from any photo…..so I only do things I like.
My blue Quaker talks a lot and ask “Where’s Krystal”, and “What’s Krystal say”….that was hard to hear at first but now I enjoy talking about her…..she had a very happy life.

I just happened to come across your blog. What a wonderful tribute to your Bichons and know how hard it must have been to put it together. My heart goes out to you. They look so much like my Havanese, she turned 17 the 3rd of January. That’s two years past the life expectancy of the Havanese. I have truly been blessed with her longevity. Thank you again for all the wonderful photographs.

  243. January 8, 2021 at 1:34 am

I am crying reading this…and just read how you also lost Chloe shortly prior. They become our whole lives…and you theirs. We are always blessed to have animals in our lives so close, although the pain of losing them is hard to endure. Nevertheless, we go on and share our love with another sweetheart. I have always enjoyed seeing your two precious girls, so lucky to have such wonderful lives with you!! We will be reunited with our furbabies one day. Glad you invited another sweet little girl into your lives, too!

It’s so difficult to lose a member of your family. Chloe will always remain in your heart. This is my7th chihuahua and you love them each in their own way. I’m happy you have another little fur ball to help ease your pain.
Thank you for all the joy you give to us in all your wonderful postings. It has especially helped us during the past 2 years, looking forward to having those big gatherings again so we can use your ideas and wonderful recipes!

Mary, how heartbreaking to lose both your adored pups so close together! I’m so very sorry! I lost Fibber unexpectedly during a holiday season and feel your grief. Having Whiskey now as you have Lola doesn’t replace them, but helps fill the heart.
