A Post and Letter to The End of Summer

Dear Summer, We look forward to your arrival every year.

And love your florabundance and the variety of blooms you bring. . .

Along with the butterflies and bees that follow.

We love watching the birds nesting. . .

And enjoy your longer days and lazy weekends.

We look forward to your quintessential summer flavors. . .

Farmers Market peaches, tomatoes, corn and bounty of summer vegetables.

But by the end of August, we’re weary and wilted from your heat and days of 90+ degree temperatures.

And are drying up and in need of rain. . .

Making it a chore to water and keep everything alive.

When the calendar page turns to September, we’re ready for fall!

Thank you for your cooperation. We look forward to seeing you next year.:)

Farewell summer, I hate to see you go, but it is time for a change, cooler temps, autumn colors, that crispness in the air, and getting everything ready for winter.

Bring on the pumpkins, the fall weather and turning leaves. Love fall!🍁🍂

This is such a beautiful post. I love your Post box with live plants in it. Pinning. :)

  5. September 9, 2015 at 7:10 am

Oh my gosh. Admittedly, this is so me. Well said (and photographed, of course).

  6. September 9, 2015 at 7:20 am

Summer is a short season in Maine so folks here are not quite as ready for summer to end. Changing leaves and shorter days, however, are sure signs it’s fleeing.

Oh, so ready for Fall. I need relief from our southern humidity and pesky mosquitoes. Your photos are eye candy…so deliciously appealing.
I would like to know which camera lens you use for the close up photos.
Thank you and may crisp, cool breezes bless you soon.

Thank you Mary for your reply to my camera lens question. The site you guided me to is very informative. Blessings, Bonnie

I love the post box and all your photos. Very beautiful! But autumn is on it’s way and I’m looking forward to the colorful leaves and pumpkins; just not the season that follows afterwards..LOL!

Over in England, summer is often wet and cold:( So no, I am not ready to say goodbye to the occasional sunny, warm day! Remember as kids, the summers lasted forever? Now they whiz by. I will miss the long, long days of sunrise at 4am and sunset at 11 pm. Already it is getting dark much too early. But I am looking forward to all things pumpkin!

I am reluctant to see summer go but I am looking forward to those crisp fall days, and the spectacular color display that awaits us as the trees show us their true color.

  11. September 9, 2015 at 8:14 am

Mary, I usually want summer days to last as long as possible to cut down on cold, icy, dark winter, but this year I am so ready for cool days and that fall tinge! I love your falling-water can tower and the post box makes your little shed even more welcoming if that is possible! I hope you get some rain soon. Linda

  12. September 9, 2015 at 8:20 am

Haha Mary, you have had a rough summer! As I write this it is actually raining yet the sun is coming up, it’s just so humid it turned into a brief shower :) I have decided we are all seasonally fickle, always dreaming of the next one, the colors, flavors, and the promise it brings. Soon we’ll all be anxious for Christmas and snow, [not me] then the renewal of Spring. All I know is it goes much too fast! I do love your letter posted to summer, and your photo of the watering can tower really sums up your dry summer woes…I love the way you ended your letter, thank you for your cooperation, we look forward to next year, very diplomatic!!!

Oh Mary, you really should compile a book with this post and pictures. It’s been pretty dry here ( not as dry as you have been tho) our Cotton Wood tree has lost over half its leaves already and the Sugar Maple trees are still hanging on to theirs. School started yesterday for my 5 grandchildren, so yes fall is upon us. Our farmers markets have their winter squash and pumpkins out already yes fall is definitely upon us.

In answer to your question..BOTH! But I like the changing weather. Yes, by this time of summer I’m ready for a change..tired of the heat & humidity, ready for some cooler temps..fires in the fire pit and our fireplace but also ready to put gardens to bed and concentrate on other things..enjoyed your post to the end of summer and your pictures. Hopefully, today we will get some much needed rain and cooler temps..looking forward to your Fall post where I get a lot of ideas..thanks everso for them..but I really think you should have a few more watering cans..I don’t think you have quite enough!! LOL!!! 😍😍🌻🍃🍂🍁🐛🐝🐚💦☔️💨❄️🌞🔚🔙🔜

I adore you cans on the side! The post box is picture perfect. I think of heading home in fall, fearful there will be nothing alive, I am amazed at your garden, we have certainly watched it blossom over the years, it’s been a fun journey from the lake to the garden.

  19. September 9, 2015 at 9:54 am

I am hoping we get many weeks of Fall weather! It is still HOT here but rek\lief is to come tomorrow actullay! I just PRAY Winter hlolds off, I ADORE fall but hate winter, the cold temps and being cooped up inside! I guess there is a trade off wherever you live. This is such a BEAUTIFUL post, so much eye candy. Beautifully done, Mary.

I ALWAYS look forward to your posts! The photos are so colorful and very well done. Being in Georgia (Atlanta), we are also awaiting Fall with anticipation. Like you, we needed rain desperately, but finally got a little this week. Fall is my favorite season, too….cooler, and the colors are spectacular and lots of Bulldog football! Thank you for sharing your potting shed and your “Letter to Summer”. Have a wonderful week!

Enjoyed your letter to the end of summer but I look forward to the autumn weather as well as cooler temperatures. It’s been too hot here with temperatures in the 90’s and it’s early September. Our area is supposed to get some much needed rain tomorrow. My husband’s vegetable garden did well earlier in the summer as there was enough rain to get lots of squash, tomatoes, eggplant and corn. Love your beautiful postings.

  25. September 9, 2015 at 1:44 pm

Love, love, love that metal post box. How did you attach it to your front door? I have a similar one and want to copycat your look!

    • September 9, 2015 at 2:15 pm

Hi Jeanine, mine came with a hole so it’s attached with a screw :)

  26. September 9, 2015 at 2:36 pm

I am more than ready for fall…believe it or not, we do experience seasons in Hawai’i, although they’re much subtler than for you on the mainland… This summer we have had record breaking high temps, and with the FOUR Category 4 hurricanes that have threatened us, we have experienced the weirdest summer…EVER…Although none of the hurricanes hit us directly (Thank you, Lord!) the ones that took a northern course have cut off our nice summer breezes and trade winds…Here we are, in the early part of September and we have had 6 scorching record breaking days out of 9 days!

Anyway…I feel for you too…we also need some rain and pray for a bit of breeze!

Love all of your watering cans hanging from the eaves on chain….I used to do that with baskets when I had my shop in Orangeburg, SC!

I loved this post. I really don’t like short days but love everything about fall, particularly college football. I really appreciate all your wonderful posts. I peruse your recipes all the time and just printed out your Muffuletta Puff Pastry Pinwheels.

I appreciate your sentiments. Sometimes, we forget to simply LOOK outside and around us, because we are too busy looking at the calendar—planning—when we miss what is happening, in the NOW!…Great Post! Thank-you

Oh Mary, I am never sorry to see summer end, but I’m still waiting!! I love your post box…so pretty on your door, along with the basket of flowers. You’ll never believe what I saw peeking out of one of my bird houses today????…..a snake!!! Eek and ewwww!!!

  31. September 9, 2015 at 6:54 pm

was that a “Dear John” letter to summer ?!?!! I would like summer to hang on a while longer! I love fall, but what follows isn’t always so wonderful here in the north.

Love the post box , so cute !!

Hi Paula, That’s exactly what it is :) We don’t have much of a winter and are sweltering here. I look forward to fall every year!

Thanks Mary for the wonderful comments with those beautiful photos—and I live a bit further South so I am ready except all my gingers go dormant and the garden isn’t pretty and I will miss that. Where did you find the oh so pretty mailbox!!! It’s perfect—

    Hi Mary,

What a great post ~loved the sentimental letter to Summer! Too cute! The pictures are over the top. I love the picture with the bumble bee and the Monarch butterfly on the same flower! I want the new Postal bird box and really smiled at your watering can collection!. What a great way to display it. I’ve had so much fun this summer that I’m not quite ready to let it go, however, I do love fall also. Winter’s here in MI are tough and the last two have about done us all in so I’m storing up lots of memories to tide us over the L O N G winter. lol. Your wonderful blog is always a joy and that will help too. Hope you get your rain, we sure are, which is making for some very steamy days.

It is with mixed feeling that I see this summer’s end, because of the cool temperatures it did not even feel like summer, but at least we got rain, lots of it too :-) Love your photos and write-up very much.

How did I miss this post? I’m truly ready for summer to pass the torch to autumn days, but it’s transitioning slowly here in TX. I could scroll up and down this post repeatedly. Each image is a sweet reminder of how beautiful it is at your home. Adding some of these to my Pinterest boards. Thanks, Mary!
