It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that we write to share some deeply difficult news with the wonderful community here at Home is Where the Boat Is. Our beloved Mary has passed away.
Mary spent years creating this special corner of the internet, transforming her love for lake life, gardening, and creative hosting into something truly magical. Whether she was sharing a new tablescape, inviting you into her potting shed, celebrating “Tea on Tuesdays,” or posting photos of her cherished pups, Sophie and Lola, her goal was always to bring a bit of beauty, warmth, and simple joy into your lives.
We want to express our deepest gratitude to each and every one of you. Mary cherished her readers more than words can say. Your visits, your thousands of kind comments, your shared stories, and the genuine connections you formed with her brought her immense happiness. You weren’t just followers to Mary; you were a community of friends who shared her passion for the little joys in life.
Thank you for being such a meaningful part of her journey and for filling her life with so much warmth and encouragement over the years.
As we navigate this difficult time, we find comfort in knowing that her spirit lives on through the beautiful archive of creativity she left behind. We hope that whenever you see a vibrant hydrangea, set a beautiful table, or enjoy a quiet moment by the water, you will think of Mary and smile.

I’m so very saddened to hear of Mary’s passing. Through the years, I certainly have enjoyed sitting down at my table and finding a posting from Home is Where the Boat Is. She will be missed by me and all her readers.

I am so sorry for your loss. I have felt like she was a friend from the first time I read her blog. She made me laugh, try new things and we shared a deep affection for Halloween. Cherish your memories and know she touched many people.
I am deeply saddened to read this post. Mary was a special lady that I shared many of the same likes with…flowers, birds, tea, dishes, and most of all we shared the love of our babies. I have a long hair dachshund, Sophie who I love dearly!! I will miss her so much. Prayers for the family and friends in the days ahead. Much love to all. 🙏♥️
This blog has been a “bubble of happy” during many hard things in my life. Although technically strangers, I know many of us felt a kinship with Mary’s beautiful self. She will be so missed.
I am so saddened and shocked by this news. Mary brought me and so many others so much joy reading her posts, following the stories of their dogs, their beautiful property, her lovely flower arranging, and who could forget Rod and Rowena, and so much more. I have told my husband for years I wanted to move to Lake Norman because of her posts and photos of their beautiful area. I will miss her immensely. My thoughts and prayers to her family.

I too am heartbroken. Her blog, creativity, kindness… ugh, she was simply the best. May she rest in piece and may her family and friends move forward with her love in their heart.
My heart is so saddened to hear of her passing. What began as simply following her blog became something much more meaningful to me. Through the words she shared and the pieces of her life she opened up to us, she became a friend—one I never had the opportunity to meet in person, but one whose life touched mine nonetheless.

I am absolutely heartbroken and shocked to read this news. Mary was such a tremendous inspiration to me for so many years. We participated in many blog tours together, and I had the privilege of featuring her beautiful work in more than one of my publications over the years. In fact, she is featured in one that just came out last week.
She was truly a gold standard for me — someone whose creativity, graciousness, attention to detail, and extraordinary ability to create beauty inspired me again and again and again.
I simply cannot believe she is gone.
To Mary’s family, please know that her beautiful life and creativity reached so far. She inspired me more than I can possibly say, and I know I am only one of countless people who felt that way. What a beautiful legacy she leaves behind.

I am so very sorry to read this. I had been missing her posts and especially wondering after she was missing from Pam Richardson’s tea posts. And since Halloween was approaching, her favorite time, I knew something must be wrong. I was one of the fortunate readers that was lucky enough to receive goodies from her on three separate occasions. Since I also live in Piedmont NC, only about an hour and a half away from Lake Norman, I felt like we were neighbors. Her blog was always full of beautiful photos, recipes, helpful decorating hints and sweet puppy pics. She was extraordinarily gifted and talented. I will truly miss her beautiful and uplifting daily visits. My deepest condolences to her family.

Oh my goodness, what a terrible loss! I’m so sorry for all of Mary’s family and all of her followers. Mary , you were a ray of sunshine for me when I lost my husband. Sitting in that dreadful hospital every day , when I’d read your posts they would lighten my load! Now I know you are building a new potting shed in heaven. God has a beautiful, creative angel in you! I will miss you, we all will miss you!
What a wonderfully written tribute. Mary’s blog was my favorite lifestyle content on the entire internet – beautifully styled, written and photographed with absolutely boundless creativity and an unparalled eye for design and presentation! Season after season her page has been both a respite and an incredible source of inspiration for me, and I loved trying out her recipes for my family and friends. Her table settings were beyond compare, more gorgeous than anything I’ve found on Instagram or anywhere else in the world. I’ve been busier at work than I’d like lately so I haven’t caught up on some of her wonderful fall posts but I will stop everything to do so today and just appreciate her many contributions to a beautiful life that she so generously shared with all of us, and her warm heart. There are tears in my eyes as I read this sad news and I wish her family and friends who were kind enough to let us know of her passing the comfort of abounding love and memories.
