The Potting Shed is dressed for fall with pumpkins, mums and corn stalks for a celebration of fall and harvest season!
We’ve had a week of beautiful fall weather with daytime temperatures in the 70s, dipping into the 40s and 50s at night. We’re warming up again this week to summer-like temperatures in the 80s but I’m staying in a fall state of mind. . .
With thoughts of apple orchards, hot cider, harvest feasts, hay rides, pumpkin patches and corn mazes!
When I found this directional fall sign at T. J. Maxx several weeks ago, I knew I wanted to plant it by my Potting Shed! I added a few sprigs of bittersweet vine to embellish it and along with more bittersweet vine to wind along a bird topiary form to replace the clematis that is no longer in bloom.
The golden light of fall is one my favorite things about the season, when the low slanting light paints everything in a soft warm glow.
Corn stalks flank the door of the Potting Shed for a fall welcome. . .
Tricolor mums marry the brighter colors of summer with the burnished and deeper hues of fall.
And a bittersweet vine wreath frames a vintage tole tray on the door.
The window box is liner free with a harvest of gourds and pumpkins.
You can find mesh bags of assortments of gourds and pumpkins from Lowe’s and Walmart for just a few dollars. I placed terra cotta pots in the back of the window box for space filler and placed the gourds and pumpkins in front of them. The pots provide a place for the top row of pumpkins to sit safely and be visible.
The field next to my shed is blooming with feathery grasses. . .
And it will soon be time for a Hay Bale Harvest!

Where did u find such a unique mixture of pumpkins? Are they all real?
Hi Debra, I’ve been picking them up when I see them for a couple of weeks now. Some from a local farmers market, garden center, the grocery store and Lowe’s. Lowe’s has some pretty Cinderella varieties and heirloom pumpkins, but you have to be quick and snatch them up before they’re gone :)

Oh My Goodness – absolutely love your fall photos!!! I’ll be the 1st to admit the fall is my absolute favorite time of year – AND that my decorations were up the last week of August! I really tried to make it to September 1st I swear :) Anywho – it’s just a gorgeous time all around, especially out here on the farm – it’s a really great time to relax & recoup before the hectic holiday season starts up. Love this post!
It looks like the pumpkin truck just backed up to the potting shed door and unloaded it’s most wonderful pumpkins Mary! A harvest explosion!! LOVE the corn stalks and the multicolored mum pot :) I’ll be by later for a hay ride and and some cider, and set me a place for the harvest feast please! What a great way to start this week, it put an instant smile on my face!

Hi Granny Gay, I buy a bittersweet wreath at a local farmers market every fall. It comes from the NC mountains and is well worth the price. If I had to wrestle with those cumbersome vines, I would lose all those berries. :)

You find the best “stuff”! I love Autumn, love the color, although it mostly stays green where I live. But I can enjoy the color found in other places and remember … sweet memories. I’m hoping fall will make another quick fly-by this weekend. Meanwhile, we set heat records. Tired … I’m tired! Ha!

My favorite potting shed looks so glorious dressed in all her autumn decor! Mary, your fall welcome is spot on with your mix of pumpkins, gourds, and colorful fall blooms. I wasn’t going to buy pumpkins for outdoors this year because the critters eat them almost overnight, but I did bring a few home for the sunporch. Last night I read that if they are sprayed with Pledge, the critters will leave them alone. I’m off to buy Pledge today to see if that will work for the pesky squirrels that roam our garden.
Love your bittersweet wreaths. Can you find them locally or do you make your own? Bittersweet doesn’t grow here. I have to depend on retailers to offer it, and this year it has been scarce. Even the dealers at Round Top didn’t have it for sale. I found one bunch at the store last week, but now I’m on a search for some wreaths. Your always inspire me.
Hope your temps don’t get too high. We have been back up to the 90s. ;-(

Hi Sarah! I’m not sure why the squirrels don’t nibble on my pumpkins…maybe because boat wiring and our chairs are more appetizing? :) I buy the bittersweet from a local farmers market every fall. They get it from the NC mountains and make the wreaths and sell the sprigs. I spray it with aerosol hairspray to slow down the berry loss. I can only imagine how many I would lose if I was wrestling with the vine to make a wreath!

Oh Mary you just flow with creativity! I love every inch of your fall decorating. It truly is a harvest of wonderful things that this time of the year brings us. Love the window box loaded with pumpkins and gourds! I like the different things you used to stage the pumpkins on. The grapevine wreaths are perfect for accenting and stacking things on. I used them this year with my fall “deckorating”! That directional sign couldn’t be more perfect!
Your shed is absolutely fantastic! I love the paint colors, the porch posts, the window box, and the stained glass windows! I am especially partial to the X panel door. That is what is on the house that I grew up in and my mama still lives in. Now for the fall decor…. AH-MAZING! Glorious. I can’t say enough. I love it all.

Thanks for the idea to put the pots in the window boxes! In the first picture of the pumpkin topiary is the bittersweet real on the wreath? It is gorgeous. I read that you get a bittersweet wreath at the farmers market and am assuming this is one of them. Your potting shed is BLOOMING with Fall beauty! You never, ever disappoint!
