Regular readers know I’m a big fan of Vicki Sawyer’s whimsical art!

Whimsical Tea Party with Feathered Friends #birds #vickisawyer #tea #teaparty #macarons #diy #tablescape ©homeiswheretheboatis.net

Artist Vicki Sawyer was inspired by an idea she had one day while walking–

“If birds can build nests, then they can make hats”.

Whimsical napkins were a recent HomeGoods find,

‘Vicki Sawyer-esque,’ with the flowers atop the birds’ heads.

Pewter bird napkin rings were purchased several years ago,

but are still available, joining silver twig flatware at the table.

If you’re not familiar with macarons, they have delicate, crispy almond meringue shells,

and are typically filled with a sweet layer of buttercream, lemon curd or jam.

They can be a little temperamental to make, but you can find them

in refrigerated or freezer section of most grocery stores.

I thought it would be fun to hand paint the solid colored shells some using gel food coloring

and edible ink food markers.

They make a fun and tasty mini canvas!

You can add simple embellishments like flower and vines

or paint more elaborate designs,

customizing your macarons to your theme, holiday or season.

You can use the same technique on royal icing topped sugar cookies as seen in

Wild Sugar: Seasonal Sweet Treats Inspired by the Mountain West.

Here are the supplies you’ll need:

AmeriColor Soft Gel Paste Food Color

or

Chefmaster Liqua-Gel food color

Colour Mill food gels are not recommended for painting cookies as they’re oil based and don’t dry properly

Food Safe Paint Brushes

Food Coloring Marker Pens

Clear Vanilla Extract or Vodka

As gel coloring / pastes have a thick consistency, you’ll need dilute them to paint with.

You want to avoid water to dilute the gel as it will oversaturate your cookies

and make the shells soggy, so vodka or a clear vanilla extract is recommended.

To keep your colors vibrant, use a clear vanilla rather than the traditional brown vanilla extract

to prevent your colors from looking muddy.

Vodka works well to dilute your gel coloring,

as it evaporates quickly, without imparting any flavor or taste.

I gave the tops of my macarons a light wash of color, allowing them to dry

before painting my ‘feathered friends’.

I used a combination of Edible Ink Markers and gel food coloring,

sketching out the design with the markers first.

How to paint Macarons and Whimsical Tea Party with Feathered Friends #birds #vickisawyer #tea #teaparty #macarons #diy #tablescape ©homeiswheretheboatis.net

I layered the colors, letting them dry before adding the smaller, finer details.

You can speed up the drying process with a fan or hair dryer.

A wash of gel coloring on top of the marker will soften and blend the colors,

giving them more of a watercolor effect.

and you can eat your mistakes. ‘-)

Wow, Mary, you just surprised me big time with your painting talent! Those are beautiful little works of art! There are so many little details here in your supporting cast of feathered friends, and I see Pier 1 played a part in the casting. I love the Vicki Sawyer items, so fun. Believe it or not, I found the house party placemats at HomeGoods right after Christmas! I was so excited. Love the birdhouse disguised as teapot too. Very fun Tea on Tuesday!

I always enjoy the whimsical little birds. I could never paint those delicate birds. I wouldn’t have macarons to serve as a result of eating my mistakes. 😂 You are indeed extremely talented! Your teapot birdhouse is adorable. This was a wonderful post. Enjoy your day! Clara❤️

I’m a big fan of Vicki Sawyer, Mary, and this table is SO CUTE! I can’t believe all the Vicki Sawyer things you found, and your painted macarons are amazing! I had no idea you could paint on food, and how brilliant to use clear vanilla and Gel Paste Food Color and Edible ink food markers! Painting on food is a new to me, I wonder what other things could paint… Love the faux birdhouse teapot, mugs and place mats, so fun~ It’s all just adorable! I knew you could draw a little from the cute signs you’ve made for the Potting Shed, but wow, your birds are fabulous! I painted a needlepoint canvas with Vicki Sawyer like creatures and I’ll share it when I get it finished and made into a pillow.
Thanks for the artistic fun today!

Oh Mary, what a beautiful job you did on the macarons to match your whimsical mugs and plates. Wouldn’t this painting project be fun to do for a party??!! I laughed when I say that little birdie peeking out of your china birdhouse. Thank you for the fun tea party today!

  23. February 20, 2024 at 8:57 pm

Mary, you keep coming up with all these clever ideas to share. The painted macarons are just the cutest idea! I first discovered Vicki Sawyers art at a gallery in Nashville many, many years ago. I was immediately taken with her whimsy! Of course the rest is history, and now her designs are instantly recognized, licensed and produced for us to enjoy in our homes. I’ve been tempted to buy one of Melissa Shirley’s needlepoint canvases of Vicki Sawyers’ designs. But which one???? Of course if birds can build nests, they can create hats!
Thanks for a delightful teatime, Mary. Always a treat!!!

  24. February 21, 2024 at 7:36 am

Hello Mary, I knew you were a creative soul but now add artist to your repertoire! WOW! These Macarons were incredible! And then add them to your beautiful table setting filled with Vicki Sawyer’s tableware and even placemats!
I loved the teapot as a birdhouse… darling!
Thank you for sharing this most creative tea time ever with you!

Hello, I am so captivated by the thought of painting macarons. My daughter and I have taken several classes in macaron baking at Sur La Table- finicky little things for sure. But lucky me I now have a macaron bakery near me! Voila’ instant mini canvasses. I also needlepoint canvassed with Vicki Sawyer images so your project really captured my imagination. Off to purchase those edible markers! Than you for the inspiration!

  26. February 22, 2024 at 9:41 am

Love this idea. Too bad my artistic daughter lives in the big city now! But I’m guessing one of my artistic grands will have fun with this! Beautiful.
