“Sultry as a summer evening and as intoxicating as an exotic perfume, the scent of gardenias settles like a memory onto your soul. The blossoms are just as enticing. Buds shaped like seashells unfurl into velvet soft flowers in the warmth and humidity of early evening. But it’s the fragrance that captivates.”
“White is not a mere absence of color; it is a shining and affirmative thing, as fierce as red, as definite as black. God paints in many colors; but He never paints so gorgeously, I had almost said so gaudily, as when He paints in white.”
Mary, this is breathtaking. Every image is incredible!!

Gorgeous pics! I just mentioned to someone else that, while I never really thought about it before… it’s funny to see gardenia growing outside! I’ve always thought of them as indoor plants-very pretty:@)
Hi Mary
What a beautiful spot you have to live in. Was it busy on the lake this weekend? I love gardenias and your photos of yours are beautiful. We don’t have any but our neighbor does and I love the smell! Try to keep cool today. It’s too hot too early this year!

Love your blog. Wish we have the heat to worry over. It is in the 40’s today with predicted 50 mph wind here at 4,000 in So. Cal. Summer is still a few weeks away.
Gardenias are my most favorite fragrance in the entire world. My neighbor has about 15 bushes, covered in blooms, that I get to enjoy on my morning walk every day. The picture of your furry friends on the boat is darling!
i can’t ever imagine my gardenias blooming, its cold and rainy like winter ALL week again… thankfully i can breath in your beauty~ i do love white in the garden, it shines in the moonlight :)
and your blue bird captures… fantastic!
those chairs are made for me, calm waters sunny days, can you hear the hail pounding my house as i type? thunder and lightning due any minute….
your little punkins look so cute~ mine would be belly up in the water…
and that wonderful porch.. girl you embrace the good life, and thankfully share the details!
Adorable!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOVE the white magnolia’s… a true southern belle! And the bluebirds are divine. I WISH I had some here. LOVE the birdhouse. You & Jain both have one… lucky girls! Have a beautiful day!
I did “borrow” your cake like you said I could & did a post linking to you… So I hope you get some new visitors to see the wonder of you blog/world. Hope the girls finally let you sleep this morning! HUGS!
Charlene
The bird house is adorable and capturing bluebirds with your camera is a bonus….
I love gardenias….they were my mother’s most favorite flower and although I have too many favorite flowers to just decide on one, it is one of my favorite also…. Dare I mention that gardenias can bloom year-round here? I have one in my front yard, planted in honor of my mother, that gifts us with flowers almost every month.
I just planted a gardenia bush recently and am delighted to see it blooming. My grandmother had a bush when I was a young girl, and it is still my favorite fragrance. Your photographs of the bluebirds are incredible, and your two dogs are too cute!

Gardenias are my absolute fave flowers…I wore them on my hair when I got married! Your photos are fantastic, so spectacular and your puppies are so adorable!
I think if I lean reeaaallly close to the screen, I can smell the gardenias. I have a few this year but not as much as in year’s past. I just adore their scent.
I just love this summery post of yours and find the first photo of the gardenia flower a perfect example of beauty.
I’d love to join you by the water on the muskoka chairs for tea.
What a great post! Your lake place is so gorgeous! These Gardenias are heavenly. Ours are finally starting to do well this year. We can actually grow them in the desert.

Though I’m not a fan of the all-white school of decoration, I love all of your whites because they have so much depth and are all about nature. We don’t have gardenias here, except in floral shops, but I’d love to see one in its natural setting.
You know I love whites in my garden. I’m slowing moving more and more in that direction. Unfortunately I don’t have much success with gardenias. I’m about to toss out my latest one. It looks really bad.
Thanks for sharing all these cooling whites. ~ Sarah
WOW!! What an awesome series of photos this week. Oh, how I which we could grow gardenias here in VA. I loved them so growing up in Florida. I have tried holding them over in the house during winter but it just does not work. You will have to smell them and enjoy them for the both of us. Beautiful pictures and such a nice mosaic.
It is amazing how white really does lower the inner thermostat! Just drinking coffee on the porch while looking at my flowers does it for me! I absolutely adore your profile pic with your furbabies…so cute!!
Now I remember, Mary. I wrote a long comment on this post and hit a key not meaning to and the comment was all gone. Does that happen to anyone else out there in blogland? I was rushing out the door and did not get back to writing it over. I went to the Southern Living link and then did not see your gorgeous bluebirds!!!!! And to capture one in flight so beautifully. I am so envious you know because my husband and I love bluebirds and don’t have a great open space like they like. We are still trying though.
What I mentioned that day was that I love the quote about the intoxicating scent and that it settles like a memory on your soul! My mother’s brides bouquet was gardenias, mine was and my daughter’s. They do settle on your soul. Your pics were wonderful and your blooms so healthy! Love those mosaics too.
Gardenias are certainly a favorite.. they smell heavenly. Love your photos of them. And you white puppies.. adorable.. all your whiteness is perfect.. Many blessings, marlis
Beautiful post, fantastic photos, love the smell of gardenias! My grandmother had a gardenia plant for over 14 years in her home in NYC. I would stand there forever just smelling that plant! I never had luck with them, unfortunately. xo,
Wow, I can just imagine how fantastic they must smell! (the gardenias…not the li’l birdies)

I used to find white boring in the garden but I am appreciating it more and more as it absolutely glows in the evening hours. Gorgeous photos!

Such a beautiful and soothing post. Whenever I see gardenias, I think of my long gone grandmother. They were in her wedding bouquet.
Thanks for being a part of Seasonal Sundays.
