After dressing my windows with a roll of landscape burlap from Lowe’s, I was on the hunt for something to topdress :) my work surface/countertops, along with fabric to skirt my work benches to conceal the storage area underneath.
My work areas are approximately
4 feet x 2 feet.
I wanted a work surface that would be functional, easy to clean, economical, and not look too finished.
I found a sheet metal shop that does HVAC duct work to cover my plywood counters with galvanized sheet metal and attach a back splash.
The total for two four-foot, medium gauge galvanized counters with back splash, and soldered edges was $75~ and ready in a day!
We used construction adhesive to secure the counter tops in place.
I found cafe curtains from Country Curtains ~ the ideal length and width for skirting my work benches.
Lucky for me, since I would rather plant or pot, than sew :)
And to conceal necessary but unsightly tools, potting soil, fertilizer, etc.
Mary, your potting shed is a little wonderland all of its own. I could live there!

Your shed is really coming along nicely Mary! Love the great sheet metal counters, they will be nice and easy to wipe off! Lots of fun eye candy too:@)
LOVE your potting shed and your wonderful decorating ideas. Your window treatments with the burlap are darling. You are SO creative. And your metal counters. I have wanted to cover a moving island with that sheet metal but thought the cost would be prohibitive. Now I can see they are quite doable. Thanks for all your great ideas. Just wish I possessed your gardening brilliance. Everything you do is incredible!! You are an inspiration!!!
Mary….what can I say…I have never seen a potting shed that is so beautiful and exquisite…There are so many gorgeous vignettes for the eye to see…It is truly a masterpiece….I could live in that shed!!! :)
Mary, this is just fabulous.. What a great find on both the counter tops and the curtains. I am sure your heart just sings with happiness each time you enter! xo marlis

Good morning Mary, Ditto for all the comments above! I love your creativity and your photos. Your shed is lovely. Thanks for sharing.
Your evolving potting shed is a playhouse! Come on…confess! You wanted a playhouse but were reluctant to let everyone know you had not outgrown a playhouse so you called it a potting shed!!!
Whatever it is…potting shed or playhouse, it is adorable and I know its going to offer you many hours of enjoyment!
Your attention to details is amazing and right on…Love it!

You truly have the magic touch … I so enjoy your site, ideas and mostly the fact that you share them all with us … thank you so much … hugs
I love, love, love your potting shed! All you need is a chair, lamp and your favorite book for a fabulous space to unwind. I’ve always wanted a playhouse out back to “play” with. This is it. Great project……….
Your potting shed is beautiful and I agree with others that I could live in there. It is decorated to perfection, but then everything you do is! Love the counter tops. XO, Pinky
This space is MUCH too nice for a potting shed, Mary! It looks more like a small guest house!!! I would be freaking out if I got a speck of dirt or water on the floor! I guess it makes good sense to make it pretty and comfortable if you’re going to be spending time out there, though. No sense in being sentenced to a drab, dreary space to engage in an activity you enjoy! I like what you did with the burlap over the windows! It has an easy, natural vibe and lets the sun pour into the room as nature intended. Using natural branches makes it that much prettier. I am so happy for you that you have a nice space in which to relax and indulge in your passion. Enjoy it!
Hi Mary, I am truly in love with your little house! The countertops were a fabulous idea! I also see a cute little step stool between the counters and the wire on the wall between the windows, and I want to see everything in detail! Please take closeups for us! Linda
I could just move right in there, Mary! Maybe you could rent it out??!! Seriously, your cottage potting shed is so adorable. I love the sheet metal counters and the burlap swag and the darling curtains to hide what’s under the cabinets. Oh my!!
