Anticipating the Holiday Season~ Winterberry

DSC_9811-001

With its classic Holly Leaf and Berry design, Winterberry Dinnerware by Pfaltzgraff, has been hosting holiday dinners for over 20 years, making it a perennial favorite at the table.

Disclosure:

Prior to blogging, I spent half my life in retail. . .put in those terms, that sounds depressing :) Buying inventory involves working six months to a year in advance of the current season so I’m indoctrinated!

If seeing Christmas decorations or merchandise prior to Thanksgiving or November makes you cranky, I apologize in advance :)

DSC_9934-001

Winterberry’s square plates have rounded corners, allowing them to be mixed and matched with round plates that are also available. Chargers are layered~ rattan to marry the jute runner and carved white chargers used before, here, to complement the sculpted lines of the dinnerware.

DSC_9949-001

I cut some greenery to add to an artificial garland for the table, along with some other natural elements~ apples, pine cones, a few nuts to sprinkle in and added a holly and berry burlap ribbon~ helping fill and camouflage some of the less-than-realistic parts of the garland.

 Tip:

If you have access to Leland Cypress, it’s an ideal evergreen to use for Christmas decorating. While it doesn’t have the fragrance of pine, fir, or cedar, it also doesn’t leave a sticky, sappy residue behind so it’s perfect for adding to your mantle, stairs, or the table.

Thinking outside the bowl, I elevated a vase, filled with an assortment nuts and candle, for a makeshift hurricane.

DSC_9930-001

Nuts in the shell (available in the produce area of the grocery store) blend with color and texture of the deer. Readily available, nuts are beautiful mixed with fresh cranberries in season to fill vases for Thanksgiving and Christmas decorating, and can be eaten after the holidays are over :)

Winterberry ‘Cooler’ glasses have red-rimmed bottoms,

accented with painted holly leaves and berries.

Mug handles provide makeshift napkin rings~  a ready-made solution if your mugs and guests out number your napkin ring supply!

Bowls also have a distinctive square shape,  and are ready to fill with a favorite holiday soup~ Cream of Plenty!

from Winterberry, including bakers, pie birds,

My first thought was the dinnerware is a timeless classic! Add in plaid (another favorite of mine) and this table is very welcoming and cozy to me, love the deer and nuts too Mary! This is the type of setting I’d like to see in my own home this Christmas:@)

  2. October 21, 2013 at 5:47 am

I do not mind Christmas decorations/displays coming early to the stores as I love to get inspiration from them. I usually start decorating by now…but falling far behind this year…The table is just perfect as always Mary…always loved that pattern…

  3. October 21, 2013 at 6:00 am

I am smitten with how the Winterberry Dinnerware looks with our wooden chargers ;o) The plaid tablecloth and napkins also caught my eye. I may have to invest in the Winterberry since I already have 12 wooden chargers. We go to NYC for Christmas and don’t host dinner, but the dishes would be nice for a dinner party prior to the holiday. Never too early for me to look, but I don’t decorate for Christmas until I am done serving Thanksgiving dinner.

    Just love your tablescape!!!!! Great!!!!!
    Blessings from France

I love it! I like how you showed the assembly of the centerpiece. As always, fabulous post, Mary.

  6. October 21, 2013 at 6:41 am

I love how you paired the holly dishes with the plaid tablecloth and napkins, it brings a warm cozy feel to the white dishes. I also like all the natural elements, the burlap runner adds nice texture. Beautiful table!

  7. October 21, 2013 at 6:53 am

So pretty, Mary….and the little cardinal pie bird is my very favorite. We have two cardinal couples who live in our backyard. :D
    Your tablescape is perfect!

  8. October 21, 2013 at 7:10 am

I’ve always liked the Winterberry pattern — beautiful for the holidays and after — after all, it will be winter! Lovely, Mary!

It’s not to early for inspiration and instruction. Love what you always do to embellish the faux garlands. Gives us plenty of time to collect what we need. I particularly love the deer and the woven napkin rings. When used with the nuts, pinecones, evergreen sprigs and rattan chargers there’s a natural element added to the table which I love. Great job!

  10. October 21, 2013 at 7:38 am

Love the table setting! Where did you get the jute runner? It is a perfect background for the center setting over the plaid table cloth.
    Have a grat week!

  11. October 21, 2013 at 7:40 am

I’ve been in the mood for Christmas since our (Canadian) Thanksgiving is now over. I love this china and your rustic additions and natural elements work well with it to make a beautiful table setting. Love it all!

  12. October 21, 2013 at 7:42 am

I have the Winterberrry set of dishes and I love it, I use it from right after Thanksgiving until the end of February,

  13. October 21, 2013 at 8:06 am

Hi Mary, I don’t mind looking at Christmas dishes anytime of the year! :) Those chargers always remind me of snowflakes even when I use them with beach dishes so I think they are perfect with this pretty Christmas pattern. Your garland is beautiful. Today is a glorious fall day here ~~ I hope your weather is nice too. Linda

  14. October 21, 2013 at 8:14 am

What a pretty, cozy table to get us in the holiday mood. The dishes are timeless and I love them on the plaid tablecloth. Thank you for showing us how to enhance a garland , Mary. The hurricane nut-filled centerpiece, along with the deer and garland is simple for all of us to “try” to copy. xo

Oh, My! I have not seen before the cup being used as a NAPKIN HOLDER…that is just so…delightful! You truly inspire me!! franki

  16. October 21, 2013 at 9:03 am

So pretty, Mary, love the centerpiece! My sister has been collecting Winterbury for years, so I always find something to add to her collection.
I don’t mind seeing Cmas now that it is almost Halloween, but in Aug., no thanks! I have been enjoying watching QVC’s Cmas sales.
I think if I buy another Cmas dish, they will admit me, but I just might add to existing collections.
Your table has inspired me to start planning!
Thanks for linking to Let’s Dish, fa la la!

Very sweet table. So beautiful for a casual breakfast or a lunch. Love Christmas. Just getting a bit nervous about lugging all the decorations out. I am a one person over decorator.

I loved this entire tablescape. Would love to know where you got the vase. I am looking for a hurricane vase to fill with nuts or seashells whatever the season. Thank you for this wonderful inspiration.

    • October 21, 2013 at 11:33 am

Thanks Linda! The vase came from Target several years ago :)

  21. October 21, 2013 at 11:07 am

i suppose i should be shocked to see xmas in oct, but i can’t complain since i just bought xmas goodies at homegoods i will just appreciate the season a wee early with you! i always love a natural table, happy to see the apples extend their run too! the fog is cold and thick today, making that apple soup i shared with you, thanks for inspiring me to get out of a warm bed and start cooking! happy holidays to you, who knew that phrase included halloween!

  22. October 21, 2013 at 11:46 am

Mary, great post. I love the dishes and how you show everything before you started decorating. Your tablescapes are ALWAYS stunning. I will be starting decorating right after Halloween as I have so much going on. Glad to know I’m not the only one who starts early.
    Have a great week.
    Mary

  23. October 21, 2013 at 12:20 pm

I love your meticulous attention to the smallest details in all of your settings…

I was not familiar with Winterberry and have just fallen in love…Seems to be quite versatile and as one commenter said above, she uses it through the Holidays way into February…after all…winter and berries are still around during the whole season…and although appropriate for Christmas, the pattern does not shout Christmas…so I can see using it for the entire season.

I particularly like the contrast of the delicate look of the china with the natural elements you’ve incorporated…and would love to see more of your creations using these same dishes in different settings…

Mary, Your tablescapes are always inspirational. In this one I particularly like the use of plaid napkins paired w/poinsettia printed ones! I love to layer on the various prints, plaids & textures to give a collected-over-time look. You always do a wonderful job & this one is no exception. Thanks so much for sharing your creativity!

  25. October 21, 2013 at 1:11 pm

How pretty, Mary! My sister has this pattern. I’ve never seen those cute S&P shakers. I am going to follow the link you provided & see if I can get them for her. Thanks so much!!

  26. October 21, 2013 at 1:47 pm

I love the magic you create with your garlands Mary, it is just beautiful with the lovely carved wooden deer! I understand about working seasons ahead, I have been painting Christmas glasses for 2 weeks for store orders. It used to drive my kids crazy! I love seeing this winter table now, gives me time to let ideas “percolate,” and inspire me in the upcoming months~ I love that you used 2 chargers, and staggered the plates. The napkin through the cup handle is such a great touch! Beautiful Christmas table! Bah humbug to any who complain!

  27. October 21, 2013 at 8:05 pm

Winterberry is my winter pattern and I love it! The napkins you used are really cute, I just might have to copy that!

  28. October 21, 2013 at 8:45 pm

Love it, Mary! The plaid table linens look so good with the Winterberry pattern, and would be great all winter. I spent 20 years in retail, so I know what you’re talking about. I’ve already been looking at Christmas decorations. I always like the way you use the artificial garland and mix in natural elements.

  29. October 21, 2013 at 11:10 pm

I LOVE the combo of the Winterberry with the plaid!!! Thanks for the tip about the leland cypress too! I never knew that so will try to find a source for it for the holidays. As I, too, was in retail we used to start decorating the store for Christmas in August! So, this is not new to me either. It is funny though that now it starts to bother me to see Christmas decor in stores in Aug. or Sept. I must be getting old:):) Gorgeous table once more.

Wish I had a book of all your posts/pictures. Pinning will have to do. I’m totally going to try to reproduce this tablescape with my round winterberry dishes. Going to see if I can buy salad plates in the square design. I’d already decided to do a forest animal theme this year so thank you for the gorgeous post and ideas.

  31. October 23, 2013 at 11:00 am

I TOTALLY understand that concept of creating and buying 6-12 months out! It just makes sense to me. Even before I owned a retail shop, it made sense to me. Thinking ahead really pays off! Posting holiday tables early on makes sense to me, too, in that we aim to teach and share. It does no good if we don’t do that in advance of the actual holidays so that people can see, commit to memory and act upon what they’ve absorbed.

  32. October 23, 2013 at 11:32 am

just beautiful, I’m in love with that wonderful plaid!!

    October 24, 2013 at 10:02 am

I love how the winterberry and plaid compliment one another so much. You did a fabulous job. The chargers are a fantastic addition too!

  34. October 24, 2013 at 12:51 pm

Beautiful post! I’m diving right into Christmas as soon as Trick or Treat is over. I’m already planning, doing Christmas. I loved it!! Linda

  35. October 24, 2013 at 3:09 pm

I do love that you have done this early…When I read the blogs and look at the wonderful decorations, I love the fact that you can see them early enough to use some of the ideas for your Holiday this year…it just makes so much since to me to see all the things early enough to be inspired to make the most of your own Holiday, even if you are just reminded that you have some pretty collections that may need to come out for a bit…Thanks for the Christmas inspiration…

  36. October 24, 2013 at 10:00 pm

So very, very pretty. I wish I hadn’t invested in my Christmas dishes so long ago. The Winterberry pattern is absolutely lovely and I love the different shapes of the dishes! And that plaid tablecloth goes perfectly with your setting. A warm and welcoming presentation. Bravo! Rosie

Beautiful dish pattern. You really have a knack for pulling everything together. And no, I don’t mind seeing Christmas now! I’ve already started planning myself. :)

  39. October 28, 2013 at 5:41 pm

Mary, you could add class to any pattern of china. Love what you did with this one. I am a sucker for plaid, so I adore the linens and I do not mind your doing this table early – it just means I have more time to “steal” your wonderful ideas – hahahaha!!
