Fall arrives this Friday by the calendar, but Mother Nature is reminding us that summer is still here weather-wise in North Carolina, with highs in the mid to upper 80s and a jump in the humidity.
A new tablecloth from HomeGoods provided some transitional table inspiration. I loved the pattern with soft blue floral accents paired with acorns and pumpkins for a nontraditional take on fall.
Robert Sprays by Wedgwood floral plates provided just enough color to pair with the tablecloth for a transitional summer to fall table. I found a 33-piece set for $19 at an antique mall last year, with some of the pieces having a few chips and some crazing. You can see it at a fall table, paired with a floral and edible runner, here.
The creamy-chartreuse Limelight Hydrangea blooms have taken on a burnished hue and made the transition from summer to fall. They’re the perfect texture for drying when the petals beginning to feel ‘papery’. I added them to a favorite cast iron garden urn with a classic egg and dart design. The patina of the urn with the bits of rust showing through pair with coppery and ‘rusty’ edges of the hydrangeas.
I cut some sprigs from the Kaleidoscope Abelia shrubs to mix in among the hydrangeas. The pinkish white blooms on the shrubs in late summer are a favorite of butterflies and bees.
Scalloped edge woven mats add a flower petal effect, framing the plates.
Farmhouse plaid napkins add some traditional fall color to the table and an assortment of pewter napkin rings found at Pottery Barn several years ago have a vintage feel.
Amber stemware provides a golden autumn glow and accent to the table. The curve of the bell-shaped goblets pair with the egg and dart design in the urn.
And vintage flatware bring some additional blooms to the table.

I think the tablecloth and everything on your table, really, is the perfect compliment to the limelight hydrangeas. I really love the tablecloth…it is so pretty. This is the perfect fall transitional table. I love it, Mary!
I am soooo happy to say “HELLO” to fall! As it is yours, Mary, it is my favorite time of the year also! Just Love it!!! And I just love both the “settings” of this beautiful table!!! I just can’t say it enough…The environment of this setting is MY FAVORITE!!! The beautiful Lake Norman in the background of the other setting…the “table setting” is magnificent!!! The tablecloth, napkins and dinnerware color hues blend together beautifully! I love the blues in this fall table! A lovely deviation from the bright orange hues of fall! Think I’ll swing by Home Goods to see if I can find that table cloth! Did you find it this year, Mary?
As I continue to look at this beautiful “setting” photo, it is amazing how the blues in the tablecloth, pull the blue hues of the water right to the table!!! AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL!!!
Thanks so much Karen! Yes, the tablecloth came from HG a few weeks ago. I also saw it at T.J. Maxx, the manufacturer is Envogue and it’s available on eBay here. I paid less, $14.99 at HG. 🍁🍽😀
Oh so gorgeous Mary! A perfect balance of summer and fall. I always hate to see summer go, but fall is fun when it get here! :) Thanks for this beautiful inspiration!
Very pretty and peaceful table for autumn looking out over the lake. I love your urn and your arrangement is eye catching. I couldn’t think of the name of your filler a week or so ago in your arrangement so I am glad to know Abelia is the name. My grandmother had a bush. They have become popular again.
As always you pair everything together beautifully.
So lovely Mary, I think hydrangeas are beautiful in all their stages~ it’s very hot in Bham too, I was sweating inside my house yesterday! I am a big fan of the way blues and oranges play together, and the cloth is perfect for transitioning to fall. I bought some pumpkins the other day, so excited! Stay cool~

I look for an “inspiration point each year for my Thanksgiving Table. I am loving your tablecloth from Home Goods! Hopefully, I can find a couple today. The blue with the rust and gold colors are just the little something different that I am looking for this year.
I have recently started following your posts. You are a great photographer, Love your setting, your flowers, your dogs and your potting shed. One thing I love the most in you arrangements are your use of yard cuttings, but particularly the abelia. It is one of my favorites. Mine is old fashioned glossy abelia. I love your variegated one.
Everything looks just beautiful! I love the new tablecloth paired with the beautiful floral plates. Your limelights look perfect gracing the table. Happy Monday!!!
Simply beautiful, love the entire table but especially the limelight hydrangeas as they turn into their fall colors. Thanks again for inspiring us to add beauty to our world.
Mary, what a beautiful transitional Tablescape. The HG tablecloth has such pretty soft colors. The Wedgwood is perfect with the cloth! Summer returned to my Appalachian Foothills!
Lovely table! The new tablecloth is just right for this “in between” time and looks beautiful with your china. (What a great find that was!) And the flowers are gorgeous.
Love those plates from the antique mall, Mary, and they go perfectly on your new tablecloth. Your urn filled with the hydrangea bouquet is stunning. Those pewter napkin rings on the plaid napkins are so pretty.
It’s way too hot here in Texas…high 90’s, so it’s hard to think about Fall. I did decorate, though, so I’m ready! Woohoo!
I bought a similiar tablecloth recently and am so anxious to use it! Your table and photos are gorgeous! And the setting can’t be beat! Just beautiful!
This is a very calming and beautiful table. I hope you, hubby and Chloe and Gracie are enjoying some late afternoon pontoon rides. Fall on the lake is ideal…miss that part of my life.
Perfect setting to transition from summer to fall. Autumn is my favorite season with it’s earthy colors. I’m slowly transitioning here, but I’m not fully motivated just yet. Wanting to do something different this year, but have’t hit upon the right inspiration. ‘-)
Love the pewter napkin rings!
What a beautiful table! Love that tablecloth (I’ll have to look for that). I love the blue background. The dishes are pretty and in this setting quite perfect! Love the hydrangeas! Mine are getting papery and just about time to cut them!
