Memorial Day, formerly known as Decoration Day, is observed on the last Monday of May, and commemorates all men and women who have died in military service for the U.S. It’s also the unofficial start to summer which means more boating time and nautical fun on the lake.

Our theme for this edition of Floral Friday was a patriotic centerpiece to celebrate Memorial Day, Flag Day (June 14th), July 4th or for summer celebrations! I gathered some grocery store flowers~ red alstroemeria, blue and white hydrangeas, along with some flags.

Easy Flower Arranging Hack and Recycling Tip | ©homeiswheretheboatis.net #MemorialDay #patriotic #flowers #July4th

I used my favorite flower arranging hack and recycling tip, reusing those plastic netting bags that produce comes in (usually citrus and avocados). The netting is strong and flexible, making an ideal material to support your flower stems and saves you the step of taping off a grid pattern on your vase! Cut the netting to size to fit the top of your vase. Instead of floral tape, I used wide clear packing tape which makes it quick and easy to secure the slippery netting to the vase. Tape the netting to the sides of vase, stretching it to keep it tight as you tape. The tighter the netting is, the more support the flower stems will have.

To create this patriotic centerpiece, I used two vases, one to nest inside the other, and an 8″ x 12″ handheld flag. You find the handheld flags at big box stores or the craft store. The handheld flags are also available in a 4″ x 6″ size and could be used for a smaller arrangement. Remove the flag from the stick and place it inside the large vase. I added a couple of sheets of white printer paper and trimmed them to fit inside the vase to hold the flag against the glass vase. The white paper lining in the vase also makes the flag colors more vibrant and serves to make the back of the arrangement neat and tidy so the flowers stems are concealed.

Add water to your inner vase and then your flowers, using the netting to arrange and support your stems. Don’t forget to use the floral preservative packets that come with your flowers to prolong the life of your flower arrangement! If you don’t have any floral preservative, you can make you own with this easy formula.

Keep your cut Hydrangeas from wilting with this easy tip! | ©homeiswheretheboatis.net #hydrangeas

If you’re using cut hydrangeas in your arrangement, use the alum-dipping method to prevent your hydrangeas from wilting.

I cut some sprigs of Japanese privet that were blooming to add to the hydrangeas and alstroemeria.

Quench your thirst and kick off your summer celebrations with some Red, White and Blue Sangria, as easy to mix as it is to drink!

This is an easy beverage for summer sipping and serving, adjusting the flavors and fruit to your palate, party, and guests! It only takes five minutes to assemble in a large pitcher. You can mix it an hour to two in advance of serving.

Most sangria calls for brandy, rum or triple sec, but I used a citrus vodka for this patriotic batch. Or mix up a refreshing mocktail version using lemonade, ginger ale and cranberry or pomegranate juice.

Mary, I have missed your posts having been out of the country for two weeks. How nice to see your post today. I love your pedestal container with a flag wrapped around on the inside. You do a vase inside a vase so well. Your selection of flowers and patriotic colors and placement in a tray surrounded by refreshments is so pretty. With the lake in the background it is so eye catching and celebrates the occasion nicely.
