‘Woodsy and Wise’ Whimsical Fall Table

DSC_6189.1

Happy September! Labor Day unofficially marks the end of summer which means we’re closer to autumn’s arrival and my favorite season! I’m ready for a harvest of pumpkins, warm plaid layers, and cozy meals with the flavors of fall on the menu!

In anticipation, I’m at the table as part of a Fall Tablescape Blog Hop this week! You can find more fall inspiration and autumn tablesettings at the end of this post.

A set of “Woodsy and Wise” plates with fanciful portraits of animals provided the inspiration for a whimsical fall table. Artist Vicki Sawyer was inspired by an idea she had one day while walking– “If birds can build nests, then they can make hats”.

This trio of owls are a hoot wearing flowers as bonnets!

I *deerly* love this doe with Jack-in-the-pulpits blooming on her head . . .

And *ewe* can always count on the vineyard for fresh cluster of grapes to adorn your head.

I started with a pine cone garland for a ‘woodsy’ note and a foundation and base to build a runner as a centerpiece for the table. I like this garland since it can be used as the base for a mantel or table for Christmas or winter. Since I think of pine cones when I think of fall too, I decided it would work equally well for a fall table.

This is a quick and easy centerpiece and one that you can assemble in less than 10 minutes once you’ve gathered your materials. I added some dried hydrangea blooms, sprigs cut from the lorpetalum shrubs, gourds, white pumpkins and votives to create an organic runner for the table.

Place your items next to one another tucking in along the length of the runner. If you’re making your runner in advance, keep your greenery or any foliage that you’ve cut fresh and hydrated in water, adding them in at the last minute.

Tree slice chargers are serving up assorted plaid plates. A subtle antique wash highlights the relief and pattern of trailing leaf and floral vine on square plates, to pair with the white pumpkins on the table.

Bone-handled flatware adds some warmth and an organic accent to the table, while a pair of napkins are married with a copper leaf napkin ring.

Mary, I love those Vicki Sawyer plates. They make me smile whenever I look at them. Your whole table is definitely inspiring. I always love a natural centerpiece as you so creatively do. Ready for fall temps, but wish the daylight could stick around. Of course, the party animals probably love frolicking at night.😉

Mary, thank you for starting off our hop this week with such fun! Your whimsy animal plates are adorable, they have so much character to each one. You made such a beautiful natural runner centerpiece to show off this woodland theme, and even better is how simple you make it seem!! I adore your use of plaids, it’s just perfect for the fall crisp weather!!🍁🍂❤️

Mary, I love your whimsical woodsy table. The tree slice chargers and plaid plates show off your new woodland whimsical creature plates and your centerpiece runner with natural elements is amazing. There are no baby boos around here and I really haven’t seen gourds either!
Very creative post as usual. Your witty commentary was fun. Have a great Labor Day!

Adorable plates! And I love your beautiful table runner. It’s very elegant, yet has that rustic woodsy fall feel.

Those plates just made me smile this morning, Mary! My favorites were the owls, and the chipmunks…so cute! Your plaid tablecloth was the perfect setting for your gorgeous, and so simple -to -make table runner. I always love the wood chargers, and the plaid plates will go with so many Fall table settings. Thank you for getting me in the Fall mood. Happy Labor Day! Give Gracie and Lola a treat and hug from me.

Mary, what a fun and whimsical table. I love the Vicki Sawyer plates with the woodland creatures in their quirky hats and your commentary made me laugh out loud this morning. Your organic centerpiece is so perfect for fall, so far there have been no pumpkins or gourds to be found in my neck of the woods. Your table is full of texture and pattern which you mix so perfectly. It is always a pleasure to blog hop with you and Happy Labor Day!❤️

Mary Mary Mary….again a beautiful and original tablescape that inspires us all. You bring to life a whimsical and Autumnal setting that makes one go back, and look at it all again, because there is so much to see and one does not want to miss a single element that makes up this gorgeous table. The Vicki Sawyer plates are so cute and original in their design. The pine garland down the center of your table with the “how to” explained in detail is what sets you apart from all others. Love it! Amazing as usual. It is so fun to blog hop with you and it appears many of us have decided to use plaid tablecloths for our Fall backdrops.

Woo-Hoo bring on fall!!! Those plates are super cute and I can’t believe you found gourds! We still don’t have real pumpkins here yet, I was just looking this morning:@) Happy Labor Day Mary-enjoy!

This is the best fall table setting I’ve seen yet! I raise sheep so, of course, the ewe with her grape headdress is my favorite. I also like the white plates set askew instead of square on the charger…it just makes for a very picture perfect setting. Everything is so detailed right down to the napkins and flatware.

Another lovely fall table. Love the plaid and the wooden chargers, the playful animal plates are too cute! That deer with her sweet “doeful” eyes! Precious! Love all things fall, but I am clinging to summer a bit longer with my table dressed in lighthouse dishes and a sea shell filled lantern. Very hot and humid here today, I am for sure resting from my labor and having a lazy holiday! Enjoy that new puppy and give Gracie a hug for me. Happy Labor Day! 🇺🇸

You are such a talented, creative, designer and puppy raiser. Hope you share some experienced ways you train your new puppy. I’m tempted to adopt a puppy soon. Any words of wisdom?

    • September 4, 2018 at 7:57 am

Thank you Lexy, the table details are listed at the bottom of the post. It’s been 13 years since we’ve had a puppy. I needed a refresher course and just read Zak George’s Dog Training Revolution and highly recommend it! He’s got some great YouTube videos too. 🐾

We enjoyed a full weekend of football…yay!…but no action in Asheville on leaves or color, or cooling off!
Your table whets my appetite for what’s to come…our favorite Season.
Can you say where you got the pinecone garland that you started with? It’s simple and natural.
I dislike the ‘fakeness’ of many that I see in stores. Where do you recommend buying?
Thanks, Mary; and please keep inspiring us!

Mary, as always, your table is lovely. Those plates are so whimsical and fun! I really like your layered plate stack, too! I especially like the plaid plates, there is nothing like plaid at this time of year, is there? Is your lovely photo of the colors across the lake from this year? Has the color begun already? I look forward to a drive from Ohio to Florida later this fall, hoping to see some of the lovely fall color. Thank you again for joining another hop and sharing your table styling talents!
