It’s been a cold, blustery and rainy week with a 50 degree drop in temperatures, a
shock to the system after unseasonably warm weather and balmy 75 degree days!
It’s the perfect weather to stay indoors with a good book and a mug of something warm
to drink and enjoy a little winter nesting!
Our Winter Nesting Tree is a tradition started six years ago to extend the twinkle season
for the months of January and February when it’s cold and gray outside.
The twinkling lights of the tree help make the transition from Christmas
to winter and keep the house a little cozier and brighter.
It’s good for my mental health to turn the tree on in the mornings and evenings
and enjoy the twinkle and glow of the lights.
Our Winter Tree is decorated with bird ornaments and nests,
snowflakes, icy branches, snowy white bands of sparkling ribbon
and pine cones.
Bird ornaments collected over the years, flocked to the tree
looking for a cozy place to nest for winter.
There’s a Titmouse. . .
A Nuthatch. . .
And some Chickadees.
And some unidentified bird varieties. . .
A parliament of owls have gathered on the tree. . .
Most of the owl ornaments came from at Hobby Lobby over the years. . .
Hobby Lobby’s Christmas ornaments are 50% off starting in October
and they sell out quickly!
Whooooo would have guessed there are some many variety of owls? :)
I added a few more sparkling white picks to the tree this year,
found on clearance for 75% off at Michaels.
I used my hubby’s bolt cutters to cut the thick wire stems
to make more individual branches to add to the tree.
And I added some ornament cones to hang from the branches for the birds to nest in this year!
These ornament cones are a fun, affordable and easy craft project using scrapbook paper that
you can find in single sheets or in paper pads at the craft store.

I filled the ornament cones with some paper shred for the bird ornaments to ‘nest’ in.
These cones come together quickly using the same method as in
Valentine Candy Cones and Easter Treat Candy Cones.
I was hoping for snow last week like the NC mountains received, but it was only rain for us.
I’m keeping my fingers crossed for snow later this winter
while I enjoy the sparkling snowflakes on the tree.

Mary, your bird tree is magical. I decorated a small tree last January with our bird ornaments. This year I have decorated our den mantel with a snowman, a bird and wintery birdhouse, a glittery nest, twinkling lights and delicate artificial greenery. It definitely lifts our spirits for the winter season. High of 33 here tomorrow in coastal Virginia~

I love seeing your winter tree Mary. You have so many great bird ornaments. I’d be tempted to replace having a Christmas tree for this one! We got 10″ of snow this past Friday, and then over an inch of rain yesterday. It’s a mess outside! People’s yards look like swamps. Here’s to the start of a new, dry week!
Love it Mary! Love your flock of birds and beautiful winter tree. The soft lights help keep the atmosphere of peace and calm as we snuggle in on these long, cold winter nights. My “seasonal tree” is just the ticket to keep the doldrums away, creating a special corner in my house for added fun and decoration with my bird ornaments always on display. Right now the added icicles and snowflakes echo our very bitter temps we are experiencing. 9 degrees with a bitter sharp wind making it even feel colder, is too much for this Michigan girl! Tomorrow it is supposed to a make it to the 30’s and will feel like a heat wave! Lol

Your winter bird tree is gorgeous! I had not seen such a thing before – what a wonderful idea! I have collected a few bird ornaments over the years but now have an impetus to do more. We always leave our tree(s) up until after Epiphany but next year, I think instead of taking down, I’ll “re-decorate”. I agree I appreciate turning those twinkling lights on in the morning (so dark in the winter!) and then enjoying them all and again especially in the dark of evening!

Mary I just adore your nesting tree. I had planned on doing this same sort of tree in our home after Christmas but right now am sick as can be in bed since New Year’s Day with that dreaded Covid ~ and I tried valiantly to keep from getting it. Hoping I get strong enough to still be able to do the tree but there’s always next year ! ❄️🦉🪶🐿

Such a wonderful idea! When we took down our Christmas Tree this weekend my husband and I both said how dark it looked in the house. Tonight I am going to suggest doing a winter tree in future years. Your tree is beautiful!

Adore your bird tree. I have a few bird ornaments but will have to look for more after seeing your tree. Because we do a “real” tree I took it down the other day but it is in my back yard waiting to be decorated with treats for the birds. My hubby built me a wooden tree that I saw on a different blog in the fall. It sits on our screened porch but I can enjoy from the family room. I decorated it with Halloween witches, ghosts and pumpkins and orange lights in October, November the Halloween decorations were switched out for pumpkins and turkeys, then of course Christmas decorations and white lights. Yesterday I made it a snowman tree with a big Snowman head on top and lots of little snowmen on each “branch”. I may just keep it up all year…could do hearts, then Easter…then flowers. 😊 It was easy to make and has become my favorite decoration. Peace.
I love you winter nesting tree Mary, and all your bird, owl and winter ornaments. The icy branches you added this year look great! We always get a real tree that only lasts for 3-4 weeks so we can’t keep it up much past Christmas. Your tree looks so real and I know it keeps things cheerful during the long gray winter months. Hmmmm….I just might have to get a tree and decorate it with snowmen!

Happy New Year’s Mary! Wondering if Lola or Sophie saw and are curious about the birds on your tree? It was always a struggle to keep our boxer away from our decorated tree. He would quietly watch us decorate it and then at night, he made it his mission to take it all down!
oh Mary! a wonderful winter wonderland!!!! I love to decorate ‘trees’ for various holidays .. Christmas, Winter, Valentine’s Day and Easter especially! This year our tall, vintage, soft-white Christmas Tree theme was pinks and whites and silver because our little ‘tweenie’ grande-daughters have chosen the new feminine ‘coquette’ style of decorating for their bedrooms .. and I wanted to surprise them with a tree in the same theme. Living on the side of a mountain here in Helena, Montana, sparkling snow arrived just before the holiday. After Christmas, I added ‘sparkly snowballs and icicles’ .. and NOW .. I will be on the lookout for BIRDS and NESTS to add during January. VALENTINE being my very most favorite holiday of the year .. I am ALREADY in the process of gathering ‘hearts’ and little hand-made red valentine dolls and doll dresses for the tree. . I have followed your blog for years and your inspiration has been invaluable. I have many of the same Fitz and Floyd as you and to this day still cherish each and every one. Last year we moved into our “empty nester’ home and as a result I now don’t have the surface space for all my wonderful pieces. I did, last year go to a winter tree for our main tree, and I absolutely love it. I added large white painted branches, also from Michaels. I also use white feather boas, tucked into the branches for a snowy look, and fluffy white owls of various sizes. Most of my ornaments are glass, white and silver, but this year I added a touch of gold. I hope you continue your posts because they are absolutely wonderful. Have a blessed and wonderful New Year!
Adore this idea! Here in very cold -20 Celsius ⛄️icy, snowy Ottawa, Canada also experiencing another Covid semi-lockdown. I notice many folks are just leaving their Christmas trees up! Also exterior holiday lights are still going on at dusk..being far North we have shorter, colder days and looong nights. We are downsizing over the next year and I must divest myself of the hundreds of ornaments collected over the years but will make an allowance for my birds and other ‘nature’ ornaments. I agree that having a ‘winter’ tree is so lovely to have.

Love your Twinkling Winter Tree! I haven’t decorated a tree for Christmas in years….I decorate for Winter. I decorate for every season and I’ve already added Valentines to my tree. It just makes me happy to see Twinkling lights and pretty in Winter. Enjoy your blog because you love to decorate also.
Oh Mary you’ve done it again! So gorgeous and fun! I did two trees this year – one flocked tree that was more fancy in red, white and gold and a larger Woodland one. I loved them both! Your Winter Nesting Tree is on my radar for next year. I had foot surgery last year and again this year after Christmas so I can’t decorate another tree now but I already have, owl, bird, nest and snowflake ornaments, and a unique set of chunky wood garland with stars and snowflakes that I scored last year right after Christmas. Last year I fell in love with your Winter Nesting Tree and now I have one in our bedroom bay window. I named ours “Winter is for the Birds Tree”! I had fun collecting birds all year long. Instead of icy branches and snow items, I used red berry and red berry with popcorn garland wrapped softly around the tree. The top of the 7ft. tree has long red berry picks tucked down in it. The white lights are so calming and magical. I think my birds enjoy nibbling on the berries and popcorn before they snuggle in their nests. 😊
My favorite part of these Winter days is bedtime and snuggling under our covers, reading a book, and enjoying my fine feathered friends tree. Thank you so much for sharing your Winter Nesting Tree. You may very well have started a new tradition for everyone!
