The Bees Knees Table in the Potting Shed

I love all things *bee* and love seeing them buzz and bumble about the garden. . .

I cut some flowers and bee favorites to fill some Quattro Stagioni Canning Jars.

The jars have an adorable bee skep design which is hard to photograph, but ideal for a just-picked bouquet from the garden! They’re filled flowers that are buzzing with bees now. . . buddleia, bee balm, verbena and oregano that’s blooming. Black-eyed Susans are growing wild, popping up in fields and alongside roadways with a delightful burst of cheery yellow and growing alongside red clover.

I gathered some bee favorites for a little tabletop vignette in the Potting ShedI was all abuzz over bee salad plates by Tim Coffey for Creative Co-Op that I found several months ago.

They’re joining Pfaltzgraff Naturewood embossed bee plates . . .

And bee skeps blooming with Black-eyed Susan for a little garden whimsy.

Four assorted vintage style bee plates feature bee skeps and honey bees.

Gold bee magnets are drawn to silver napkin rings like bees to nectar, for easy embellishing and dressing up plain napkin rings!

And I made a beeline to the check out counter at HomeGoods when I saw this embossed bee skep honey jar. The jar has a wax seal that I haven’t cracked open yet. The dripping wax on the seal probably made the jar qualify as “a second” but I love that the wax is dripping like honey from a jar. ;)

Flatware is buzzing with bees and on a table runner found at Sur la Table on sale at the end of the season last year.

La Rochere Bee Goblets are ideal for summertime sipping. . .

.

I found a vintage Woodman’s Famous Bee-Ware Smoker at a favorite antique mall recently.

Beauty is in the eye of the *bee* holder ; ) and I loved the graphics on the smoker so I brought it home to hang from rafters in my Potting Shed.

Enjoy summertime sipping with The Bee’s Knees Lavender Lemonade! A classic cocktail made with gin, lemon, and honey or honey syrup with the addition of lavender for a Provençal twist!

I had a reader leave a comment recently saying, “I enjoy your blog, but often times I don’t understand the point of your shed. It’s adorable, but all this requires work!”

All I can say is, it doesn’t feel like work when I’m puttering around the Potting Shed, playing with dishes and flowers. ;)

The point of your potting shed: it is a 3-dimensional canvas and your creativity pours out onto it. It is your play place. :) Julie W.

It’s not “work”, it’s passion! Potting soil under the fingernails is tres chic, and the ratio of energy expended (get off the couch!) to joy received (incalculable!) from gardening makes it all worthwhile.
    LOVE the lavender lemonade :)

You’re right Mary, this is the “bees knees!” So many Bee-u-tiful details! I spit my coffee out when I read the part about the recent potting shed comment 🤣 This whole setting makes me want to run to Home Goods and hit an antique mall! So over the top CUTE!!

Ohmygosh, Mary! I’m so excited I won the book (which I will devour!), but even without knowing I won, I was excited just reading this post! I am with you all the way in the love of bees and all things related. Your growing collection is amazing – so classy in all your choices – and so clever with those magnets on silver. And the potting shed…..not work, just puttering and piddling. There are those of us who totally get it. Love that honey jar with the drip. And we keep bees smokers in our booth as often as we can find them to resell. Love those graphics.
I may have to make some of that lemonade to sip while reading my book when it gets here. Did I say how excited I am to have won the book?? Thank you!

The point of your shed? It doesn’t need a point. It’s an adult version of a little girl’s playhouse. It is to you what an artist’s studio is to the artist … a place to let creativity blossom!

I could probably name 100 things I love about this post and your shed. I think most of us would die to have one like it where we could let our creativity run rampant, putter around and just be ourselves for a couple hours. It’s not work when you love doing it. All I can say is keep it coming and stay true to yourself.

I LOVE everything about your Bees Knees post. Your blog is my very most favorite and I look forward to see what God has blessed you with each and every day. You are SOOO creative and people that aren’t just don’t get it. I am thankful you share your creativity with us. Please don’t stop. Bees of all sorts are welcome to my garden. I have put out simple syrup in small bee dishes early in the Spring that the honey bees drink up quickly. I make sure to keep it very clean as the honey bees are disappearing and I’ve seen only a few in my flower bound garden this year. I have some of the plates and glasses you show and now on to the search for some you show. Adore your post!

I never knew how much I could love bee stuff until I saw your post! Your blog is my favorite. I love that you let us know where you got the items and even provide links. I’m curious if your potting shed tablescapes are for decorative purposes only or if you often share a meal in there. (There’s a restaurant in Maine that has a private dining area in a potting shed). I can only dream of living in a place where I can have year round gardening the way you do and enough room to store such a vast and bee-utiful collection of tableware. In the meantime, I live vicariously through you!

  29. June 24, 2017 at 4:46 pm

I love everything in your post! Now I must find a bee skep! The little green stool is just perfect and has given me the inspiration needed to paint an unfinished one I have. Thanks for sharing all your lovely photos!

Buzzzzzzzzz! I just love everything! I went over to Pfaltzgraff to see about the Naturewood Embossed Bee Salad Plates. I can’t find them? Is this something new? They are so cute. I look forward to each one of your posts and I can’t wait to try to find some of things in my cupboards that I have from my Mom and Grandmothers things so I can recreate your ideas in my home. Thank you and say woof woof to the puppies.

Thanks Janet, The embossed bee plates were available several years ago, they must have discontinued them. :(

  36. June 26, 2017 at 1:05 pm

Mary, I don’t see my comment from when you originally posted this. Not sure what is going on, but this seems to be happening to me. ‘-(
At any rate, I buzzed over to take another look. I’m in bee heaven here! Darling idea with the magnets. I’m going to remember that one! I have some bee napkin rings that I ordered years ago. They are some of my favorites! The bottle of honey is perfect in it’s imperfection. It made me think of a photo I took on my walk this morning. We had a rain over night, and I stopped to take a photo of a neighbor’s outdoor shell shaped chair with leaves floating in rain water. The house keeper was with me. When I took the photo, she comment that it was pretty messy. Ha! I replied, “No, it makes a great photo – a perfect natural vignette.” ‘-)
The smoker was a great find! It’s perfect for your shed and bee collection.
I’ll add some of these images to my Pinterest Buzzzzzz Board. Thanks for sharing.

Bees are such a cute part of summer and such an important part of pollination. We must continue to bring their role in our lives to the forefront. Beautiful as usual Mary! By the way, your shed doesn’t look like work to me – just PURE FUN!

I must find those white embossed salad plates. I’ve searched the Pfaltzgraff web site with no luck. They offer a collection called Naturewood and it has bees as the theme, but these plates do not show up. Can you give me any more information?

I almost gasped when I read about the recent comment about your shed!!!! OMGoodness we all would die for it. I often get similar comments about my Fall and Christmas decorating. WHY do I want to do all that work. Well, like you said, it isn’t work when it is your enjoyment. Right now I am in the middle of undecorating and as I get older it gets harder and slower but I will not stop doing it as I so love it. Thank you for your wonderful blog.
