Embrace winter by extending the twinkle season and decorate a tree for cozy nesting. This bird-themed tree adds some sparkle for the cold, gray winter months, decorated with bird ornaments, glittery nests, snowflakes, icy branches and pinecones.

Happy Monday, I hope you’re staying warm and cozy!
We had a wintery mix over the weekend, courtesy of Winter Storm Cora, like a lot of the U.S.

Snow is a rare occurrence for us, so I was hoping we’d receive a white fluffy blanket,
but Mother Nature only brought us an inch of snow, before switching over to sleet.

Our last significant snowfall was in 2018.

I had several comments in December inquiring about my Winter Nesting Tree. . .
my favorite way to embrace winter, along with curling up with a dog on my lap
and a craft project to keep me warm and cozy!

I’m continuing the tradition of our winter tree again this year,
which makes for cozy winter nesting!

For new readers, our Winter Nesting Tree is a tradition that started several years ago
to extend the twinkle season into the months of January and February,
when it’s cold and gray outside.

It’s good for my mental health to turn the tree on in the mornings and evenings
and enjoy the twinkle of the lights, especially when it’s dark and dreary outside.

The joy of winter birding extends indoors to our Winter Nesting Tree,
decorated with bird ornaments, as well as glittery nests,
snowflakes, icy branches, snowy white bands of sparkling ribbon
and pine cones.

Bird ornaments collected over the years, flock to the tree
looking for a cozy place to nest for winter.

Other than the addition of a new bird ornament or snowflake,
our tree doesn’t vary much from year to year. . .

There’s a Nuthatch. . .

Cardinals. . .

Chickadees. . .

Woodpeckers . . .

A Titmouse

And several unidentified bird varieties that are sparkly and shiny!

A parliament of owls have gathered on the tree. . .

See them gathered at an ‘Owl’ Be Your Valentine Whimsical Table.

Most of the owl ornaments came from at Hobby Lobby over the years. . .
their Christmas ornaments are 50% off starting in October
and sell out quickly! 🦉

Whoooooo would have guessed there were so many varieties of owls? ;)

DIY Nesting Owl Ornaments were a fun Christmas in July craft project. . .

Along with DIY Sparkling Nests.

I’d love to hear in the comments if you have snow! ❄️

Hope you’re staying warm and cozy in your nest! ❤️

How nice to extend your holiday season by creating a wintry tree! The birds look so at home with all the snowflakes, icicles, and nests! But you are missing the owls you made several years ago using old round ornament, fuzzy fabric, feathers, and pine cone pieces! I loved them so much and had to make over a dozen to use for our Ladies golf holiday party. We called it Happy Owlidays! Thanks for the great idea, they were very easy to make too! Enjoy your wintry tree.
Your tree and collection are so beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing the sparkle with us!
Mary
I love the tree. I too hate the dullness of January so I have begun to keep a tree in my family room. I recently bought pink lights and soon it will become my Valentine tree.
Thanks for the beautiful inspiration.
Always so pretty!! I Love it…I will be working on doing the same to my 2 4 ft. trees out in my Den in the coming days!! Thanks so much for the inspiration!!
Hugs,

I so look forward to seeing your winter tree, Mary. It’s really such a nicee, calming effect to have the green and mostly neutral decorations.
Do we have snow…..yes, as a matter of fact, we got socked with 3 rounds of Blair (snow, freezing rain, more snow), and another round of snow from Cora. Our grand total was 8-9″ of snow with .25″ ice in between. We are STILL buried, and likely will be until at least this weekend (17th-18th) due to freezing temps. We shoveled to clear (read: pick ax’d and metal garden shoveled) our parking pad last Wed, only to have to do it again Sat after Cora dropped another 3″. I’m over this, still concerned about boxwoods as the snow started melting/refreezing from roof to plants yesterday.
I’m just shifting my focus to indoors – reading, setting a nice table, cooking & baking. PS, I love my new baking sheets. Thank you again for the recommendation!
I use my grapevine tree with lights and then decorate with birds, snowflakes and small crystal icicles for January. In February I add hearts. It’s a good way to get through the coldest months. Love your tree, Mary!
Good morning, Mary. I always look forward to your winter nesting tree! The glittering birds and nests are a wonderful way to celebrate winter! Twinkling lights brighten dark and gray winter days. I left my trees up longer than I ever had before.
We still have a little snow on the ground that did not melt yesterday! The rumor going around is more might be coming next week. I am definitely in nesting mode. My entertainment has been bird watching from my kitchen windows!
Happy Monday ❤️
absolutely stunning! Your birds are fantastic.
Oh Mary…I adore your bird tree. I have a few bird ornaments but may expand. Right now I have a tiny bird spending nights on my Christmas wreath hanging on my front door. She comes back around dusk and is gone early in the morning. Normally I would have changed wreaths but don’t want to chance she won’t come back. Thankfully we rarely use the front door.
Here in my part of VA we got about 4 inches last Monday with a covering of ice, then had melt and freeze action until Friday night when we got close to 5 more inches. Today is to get to 50 but once again overnight in low 20s. Treacherous walking to my chicken at sunrise each day. 😃😃. Happy Days! Peace.
Love seeing your bird and twinkle tree. Think I will follow your lead next year. It’s so uplifting. Thanks 😊
Yes, Virginia, we have sNOw…since we live on the “warm side” of our lake we typically get less cold temp/sNOw. We figured 4″ this time…& ice. We moved from the Midwest to…getaway from “it.” franki. ps ❤️ that sparkly tree!!!
No snow, live in Florida. Don’t I wish, would be beautiful to see. Sure have had the ups and downs with the extreme colds and then back up to higher temps , like 70’s the other day. Makes for constant do I run heater or ac. lol.
I love seeing your winter nesting tree Mary, it makes everything so cozy! I love all your bird and owl ornaments and the pretty snowflakes. We got 5 inches of snow on Friday, it was beautiful and luckily the roads were clear by midday Saturday and no one lost power, so we got to enjoy it without problems. When it gets really cold, I like to hibernate!

Hi Mary, and happy belated New Year!
This is always one of my favorite posts each year. Your newest additions are beautiful; I’m especially impressed with your new snowflake ornaments.
Hope you’re staying toasty throughout the winter storms!
Mary, your winter nesting tree is gorgeous! I’m doing the same thing this year. I love the idea! We received 7.5 inches of wet, fluffy snow Friday. It was beautiful. Thankfully, it’s melting! The roads are in good shape now, but there are patches of black ice from what I hear. I haven’t been out in it. Thanks for sharing your twinkling tree! I must get more ornaments to have a fuller tree. Clara❤️
I like to have at least one snow during the winter so I know that we’ve hadwinter, and then I am ready to move on. That said, we got 11.5 inches here. The snow is still on the ground, it’s still cold, and I haven’t had mail in a week. I am so ready for spring.
I love all of your bird ornaments and how you did those nests. Beautiful! I inherited all of my mother’s things and she had quite a few bird ornaments. I had no idea of the variety until I saw yours.
That winter tree is always beautiful!!! Thanks for sharing again!!!
I always love your cozy sparkling winter nest tree. I really like how you decorated the top with the ice branches and the nest. I too am a collector of bird, owl and snowflake ornaments. This year I decorated 3 large trees and 1 was a woodland tree theme. Next year I would like to transform my woodland tree into a sparkling winter nest tree that will stay up after Christmas. Why not extend the beautiful joy? Thank you for all the joy you’ve brought me over the years….I’m excited to see all the beauty and joy your bring in 2025!
Mary, your winter tree is just lovely! The house is so cold and empty after Christmas. The twinkling lights and birds with the sparkling nests and picks are perfect for this time of year!
We had about 5 inches of snow in NW Ga. It was so pretty but almost gone now. We enjoyed meals by our fireplace and a hot toddy or two? Or maybe more!
Thank you for including several fun projects to try and I was so happy to see your post this morning! Stay warm!!
Mary, As always your post Christmas nesting tree is beautiful. I have 29 of the Lenox annual snowflake ornaments, plus about 6 crocheted snowflakes from over 50 years ago, and was tempted to leave them and the multiple glass icicles on the tree after I removed the other ornaments. But, getting the tree out and set up is such a project, including moving furniture to make room, I just needed to get it packed and put away. So once again I will enjoy your winter tree from afar.
In Northern Virginia we got about 6 inches of snow. For the first hours it was an undisturbed beautiful white blanket. The trees and bushes were magical and the scene quiet and peaceful. The grandsons discovered the joy of snow and cancellation of school. Too soon, however, the reality of digging out and trying to function took root. Freezing temperatures have kept some piles frozen and the snow is no longer a pretty white. I am ready for Spring! MM
I always adore your beautiful nesting tree! I live in NE Oklahoma, and we don’t get snow very often. Last week, we got a whopping 8-9 inches in my area! Thank heavens the frost cover is over the winter garden. The broccoli, cauliflower, kale, carrots, and radishes all look okay. The celery is a different story, sadly. The last remains of the beautiful white blanket will be melting off today. It’s been enjoyable!
I’ve told so many about your beautiful nesting tree…such a wonderful way to bring light and sparkle to the dreary winter months after the holidays. No snow here in Central Oregon, unusually cloudy and a bit grey. However, the overnight temps are below freezing and we’re waking up to sparkly frost every morning. I will take my tree down today but leave the greens and lights on the mantelpiece as well as the small boxwood wreaths in the windows. Thank you for bringing beauty to my morning!
Just getting over a 6″ accumulation in this corner of TN.. Driveway all cleared and salted and yesterday’s sunshine took care of the rest. Good
to go. Please stay safe and warm all….
Mary, your sparkling winter nesting tree is so pretty. Love the birds, especially the owls. I kept one of my trees up to decorate for Valentines.
I never get tired of studying this tree! It’s exquisite. I’ve slowly been collecting ornaments to hopefully do one of these for myself. Thanks for the inspiration.
I always live to see your twinkly birdie tree, Mary. Yes, we had snow last week, and some of it has lingered. I didn’t go out for three days because of the roads. We still have frigid temperatures coming up in the forecast. Stay warm and cozy! 😘
I LOVE your snowy bird tree! I am so glad to see you did it again. It is such a highlight. ♥ This Finch Rest gal loves it very much, indeed. And YES ma’am do we have snow – it is absolutely gorgeous. And more expected this weekend.
My Ohio door is always open to you should you care to visit! : – )
Your beautiful nesting tree makes me long for at least some rain here in So.Cal
I’m new here and love your fresh ideas. My kids keep asking to leave the Christmas tree up… You have my wheels turning to see what revamp I can do. We love watching all winter who visits our feeder so the bird nesting tree is so fun. I can get all the kids to quiet down at once if we hear “our owl” start hooting in the pine trees. Love the sparkle! We went sledding here today. We only got a couple inches but won’t waste it. For everyone who is done with the snow, it brings so much joy to the littles! Park at the bottom of a sledding hill for a while and I think you’ll make peace with the white stuff while it lasts! ❤️
Beautiful tree Mary and I love your nesting theme. My regular Christmas tree has a bird theme too but it didn’t fit in our new house so I couldn’t set it this year. I am very glad to take in winter nesting vicariously through yours. Surprisingly, we have not had any new snow in weeks and have been under Chinook conditions with warm temps and lots of melting of old snow. And that’s okay with me since winter is still young here lol. The pups are adorable on the pretty throw blanket and I hope you are all staying warm and cozy!
Good Morning Mary.
Here in our part of AZ we do not have snow but the higher elevation got just a bit. Our Pennsylvania Lake House has 26 inches of snow and more coming!
I enjoy seeing all your birds on your nesting tree. What a beautiful collection. And what a beautiful tree. I too need the twinkling lights. I keep them going all winter. They make me happy!
Stay warm and drink lots of hot chocolate!
I want a winter tree! It is so beautiful. You must have collected the items for years.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful winter tree! I started collecting birds, snowflakes and icicles last year and hope to have enough to decorate by next January. I have added your sweet glittery bird nests to my get-to-do list. I decorate one of my trees in gold, silver and white for Christmas and then make a few changes so it becomes our Happy New Year tree (thanks for that inspiration!) I think it will be easy to swap out the clock faces and blow horns for birdies and nests. We don’t have snow…just wind and smoke. Stay cozy!
